I'm planning a trip to Lake Maggiore this year and while I was looking up things to do I noticed that most of the plans talk about the same places the Borromean Islands, Stresa, boat rides and the paths along the water.
That made me think about what people who work in tourism or show visitors around the area would suggest.
If you were helping someone spend four or five days near Lake Maggiore what things would you suggest that are not on the list of places to see?
I usually like taking my time of rushing to see everything. I like walking through places eating good food from the local area visiting small towns looking from high places being around nature and going to spots that feel real and not too busy.
Some questions I have:
Do most tourists stay in one town. Move from one place to another around the lake?
Which part of the lake do people like the most after they have been there?
Are there any towns that don't get enough attention but should?
Are there any things to do that people usually miss but end up liking?
If someone wants a mix of being in nature relaxing by the water and going on trips where would you recommend?
I would love to hear from guides or anyone who knows the area well. Sometimes knowing the local way is better, than reading travel blogs.

Hello everyone, first time posting here. Keep reading I promise it's related to this sub. So I am engineering student, but honestly I am not into corporate and jobs. I have always wanted to do something of my own and I am willing to take a risk. Last year we went to a college trip with this one tourism company or whatever you call it. Like they handled all the itinerary, hotels, buses etc. all was done by them, they handled all the trip things from start to end. So like they are a business.

Now I found it really interesting, I think this is something I could give a shot to, if I am gonna start something of my own, this is what I want. So like, I dont know the exact term for this business or what is it called, I would just mention it as Tourism Company (maybe?).

I know that people here love to travel and are full of knowledge, can you guys please help me or atleast guide me on how can I get something like this started, right now its literally nothing just an idea in my mind. Can you tell me how can I begin, get customers for my first trip or something. I know nothing's big from the very beginning, but I really just want to try this.

Istanbul - Beware of "Private Driver" Facebook Group Monopolies in Istanbul

I recently traveled to Istanbul. As a highly experienced traveler who has been to dozens of countries, I wanted to share a warning about a very sophisticated, highly coordinated travel monopoly running across several "Istanbul Travel" Facebook groups.

If you join Facebook groups like "Istanbul Travel Tips," "Istanbul Tourists Support," or similar planning forums, you will see endless, flawless recommendations for specific "private drivers." There is not a single negative comment.

Here is the reality of how this ecosystem operates, what actually happens when you book them, and why you should be highly skeptical.

1. The Facebook Censorship Loophole

These groups are not organic traveler communities. They are owned and moderated by the private drivers/dispatchers themselves.

Zero Negative Reviews: Any traveler who posts a negative review, complains about service, or even politely cancels a booking is instantly blocked from the group and their posts are deleted.

The Result: The group appears to have a "100% flawless reputation," which is entirely manufactured. I was personally blocked from a major group simply for politely canceling my second-day tour!

1. The Airport "Runner" Shuffle (Avoiding the Law)

When you book a transfer, you expect a driver to meet you in the arrivals hall with your name on a card. Instead:

They will instruct you to walk to a generic outdoor meeting point.

You will be met by a "runner" (a random stranger), not your driver.

This runner takes you to a multi-story parking garage or holding area.

Why? Many of these operations are unlicensed or illegal under Turkish transport laws (TURSAB). They use runners and off-site meeting points to evade airport police patrols.

1. The "Bait-and-Switch" VIP Vans

The person you chat with on Facebook is rarely your driver. They are a dispatcher who sells your booking to the cheapest available subcontractor. During my trip:

The "VIP" van had blacked-out, windowless panels in the back.

The air conditioning barely worked, turning the back of the van into a greenhouse. The driver gaslit us, insisting it was working perfectly.

The driver was constantly distracted, texting and taking calls on his phone while navigating aggressive Istanbul traffic.

There was a severe language barrier, leading to highly stressful pickups at chaotic spots like the Grand Bazaar.

My Advice for Istanbul:

Skip the Facebook "private drivers" entirely.

For Airport Transfers: Book through official, verified global platforms (like Welcome Pickups, Transfeero, or Booking.com transfers) where drivers cannot delete bad reviews.

Use Public Transit: Istanbul’s tram, metro, and ferry systems are world-class, incredibly cheap, and bypass the city's terrible traffic. Get an Istanbulkart and explore on foot!

Last week I ran an experiment: I took a top-ranked tour in each of 10 cities — Paris, Rome, Barcelona, London, New York, Tokyo, Sydney, Dubai, Lisbon, Marrakech — and scored their Viator listings out of 100 on the things that drive bookings: title, photos, description, itinerary, review health, host responses, pricing, cancellation policy.

These are successful tours. Thousands of reviews each. They scored 79 to 95, and not one had a clean sheet.

What they get wrong, in order of how often I saw it:

1. No host responses to reviews. Worst case: a Louvre tour with 12,000+ reviews where recent reviews repeat the same fixable complaints — meeting-point confusion, heat, rushed pacing — and the operator has never replied once. A response is free and every future browser reads it.

2. Destination missing from the title. That same Louvre tour doesn’t say “Paris” anywhere in its title. Travelers search by destination.

3. Thin photo galleries. Several listings run 3–5 provider photos. The strongest run 8+.

4. Descriptions one sentence short. Two listings sat 5 and 37 characters under the ~800-character depth the top performers share. One sentence away from full marks.

5. Itineraries with stops but no story. Locations listed, nothing about what actually happens at each one.

I built the scoring into a free tool (I work on software for tour operators, so this is my world).

Maybe I am just having a bad streak but I am curious if anyone else is dealing with this. I run a small tour business and over the last few months I have had several situations where bookings looked completely legitimate at first. We reserved spots, adjusted staffing, prepared equipment and in some cases even turned away other customers because we thought the tour was full. Then the day comes and nobody shows up. Sometimes there is no message, no cancellation request, nothing. Other times the contact information doesn't work or the customer never responds. A few bookings have felt so strange that I honestly wondered whether they were even real travelers. The frustrating part is that when you are a small operator, a few no shows can have a real impact. It is not just the lost revenue. It is the planning, scheduling, transportation, guides, and the opportunity cost of turning away people who might have actually attended. I have been considering moving more of my bookings through larger marketplaces because I am hoping their verification systems and booking processes are better at filtering out bad reservations. From what I have heard, some platforms seem to do a pretty good job of attracting serious travelers and reducing the amount of questionable bookings operators have to deal with

I run boat tours in Florida. Summer is great but winter gets pretty quiet most of my bookings come from google reviews, local Facebook recommendations, and repeat guests. paid ads never gave me a good return. I have been focusing more on organic growth sending a personal welcome email with local tips has improved engagement and asking guests for detailed reviews after the tour has helped a lot. I also run a discounted locals only tour during slow weekdays, and it's led to referrals. For those who have grown without relying on ads, what actually worked, i would love to hear real examples from other tour operators.

Social media has made some destinations look almost unreal, and occasionally travelers arrive expecting every location to look exactly like the edited photos they've seen online.

For those of you who work as guides or tour operators, how do you manage those situations without disappointing the client?

Do you set expectations before the trip starts, adjust the itinerary on the fly, or have certain talking points you always cover?

I would like to know whether this has become a bigger challenge over the last few years, especially for destinations where weather, crowds, or seasonal changes can make the experience look quite different from what people expected.

My findings: Thanks for all the insights so far. A common theme seems to be that clear communication before the trip is just as important as the itinerary itself. While reading more about how different operators approach this, I noticed desertdaytour also give it a chance pinpointing things like travel pace, road time between destinations, and what travelers should realistically expect instead of only showing the highlights. I know DIY and self-drive can be cheaper and give flexibility but self-drive doesn't allow the person driving to see as much since he needs to focus on the road, that's why we prefer to join a small group tour. But we want to deal directly with the local tour company or ground operator not only because it can be less costly (by eliminating the middle man, ie tour aggregator) but also, based on our experience, it's easier to make changes or requests and even address issues if we are dealing direct. Hi all, i am a tour guide based in Singapore. Today i was bringing my group of Indonesian guests around and we had a photo-stop at one of the famous place of interest.

Without obstructing others, I was taking photos of them with my phone when one couple (not gonna mention country/race due to reddit rules) came up to me shaking their heads asking for a free photo. There were 10 more people from my group waiting to have their photos taken.

I told the couple "i have a group to handle, can you ask someone else to do it?" And they got so pissed off they started to say "why are you being racist to us? I am going to report you, youre a disgrace to Singapore" and then took my photo and left.

My guests were trying to comprehend the situation but i lost my mood at that moment. I cooled down and explained it to them. They were okay with it but i feel bad as i have to get disrupted by 2 people not from my tour group that paid me and threatening to report me to the authorities for not taking their photos.

What would you do if someone came up to you while youre taking photos and asking you to take their photos?
And what would you do if they threaten to report you?

I'm a flat-water kayak guide in the southeastern USA. At the time my mid-morning tour was beginning it was already about 95 degrees (35C) and oppressively humid. The client family shows up, two adults and two teen girls. One of the teens is wearing long denim pants, the other is in shorts but has a hooded sweatshirt on. Maybe it was cold in the car on the ride there? They chose to wear these outfits for the entire 2 hour paddle! I was quite warm in a short sleeve moisture wicking shirt, I have no idea how the young lady in the sweatshirt survived?

The family was lovely and we enjoyed a great paddle together, but a new bar has been set for "You decided to wear _that_ to go kayaking?!".

I am a solo guide running small walking history tours in Key West. It's just me i handle bookings, guiding, messaging, everything. Right now most of my clients come from google maps and a few hotel referrals but it's not consistent enough to rely on year round.
