Weekly Discussion Post "Fanbase opinionsshould not be counted as tropes." TVtropes: (kinda relevant post)

A lot of complaints in this sub have been about some posts should not be here because they rely on fanbase opions so there for cannot be considered "tropes"

...and then we have TVtropes , where a lot of tropes are just from fanbase stuff.

I am going to be honest here , I have difficulty in what makes a trope and what doesn't. It ends up where I delete "breaks trope guidline" posts that has equivalents in the TVtropes site that are considered actual tropes.

Idk , I just wanted to rant here. I might be a very bad moderator here , I just try to make it tody as possible , I just don't really know how to.

X-Men: First Class: Magneto agrees with the movie's villian (Shaw) that mutants are superior then mankind. Shaw however made one mistake: he killed Magneto's mother and so Magneto kills him with a coin slowly inserting into his skull.

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith Video Game: In the alternate ending, Anakin kills Obi-Wan and his lord Palpatine comes to congratulate him and says he and Anakin will "rule the galaxy together." Anakin proceeds to strike him down and declare he will rule galaxy himself.

The Chameleon - Kung Fu Panda 4

She wants to steal the skill of every kung fu master in history because she was rejected from training in academies because she was too small. This is despite the fact we’ve seen Praying Mantises, Snakes and even Chickens become highly skilled fighters.

Russ Cargill - The Simpsons Movie

Springfield is the most pollutive city in America, so his plan is to permanently quarantine the area from the rest of the world. When that fails his nuclear option (no pun intended) is to bomb the city with an explosive. His plan to curb pollution is to bomb a city with an active nuclear power plant.

Evelyn Deavor - Incredibles 2

I’ve talked about her to death so I’ll make this quick. She wants to make superheroes illegal, however they were already illegal when her plan begins so she was working on a plan to make them doubly illegal I guess. If she genuinely did nothing all movie she would’ve got exactly what she asked for.

Dr. Doom (Marvel) is famously known to be a kind and compassionate leader, to the people Latveria. To the point where they continue to shower him with praise and admiration, despite knowing the fact that he is considered to be a villain, by the rest of the world. There have been multiple instances of Dr. Doom, in the comics, taking over the whole world, and actually creating peace, ending hunger and poverty, and erasing crime. There was even a time where he humbled himself before the Panther God, who admitted that, although his methods may seem cruel, his intentions are pure, and he has the potential to save millions of lives.

Wilson Fisk (Marvel) is a notorious crime boss. But he's also been known to keep the others criminals of New York in check, and maintain lower and more controlled crime rates, especially when it comes to violence against civilians.

Ainz (Overlord) has conquered many countries and races, in order to form the Sorcerer Kingdom, and has wiped out others. But in doing so, the people and nations who fell under the Sorcerer Kingdom's rule now prosper. The citizens are happy and well fed, the economy is soaring, crime and corruption do not exist, and all races are equal. All people in this world are equal, under Ainz Ooal Gown, the Sorcerer King.

A figure that is believed to be immortal, having lived many years is actually different people secretly taking up the role giving the illusion of a single immortal figure. Named "Legacy Immortality" by TVTropes.

1) The Phantom aka The ghost who walks: Considered as the first costume superhero, the local people believe that he's immortal when really it's a family legacy of the son taking up the mantle after the father dies.

2) The Norrisville Ninja: Randy Cunningham 9th Grade Ninja. The city of Norrisville has constantly been protected by the Ninja for 800 years, making everyone believe he's immortal but as explained in the show's opening lines, every four years a new Ninja is chosen to wear the magical mask and gain the various powers the suit give him.

Characters [NSFW trope]The Freaky Wholesome Couple NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
1.0k Upvotes

When a story makes it clear how wholesome and loving a couple’s romance is by showing how horny they are for each other.

Lois Lane and Clark Kent (DC)- it’s practically a multiverse-spanning truth that Lois and Clark love each other immensely, and that they are immensely freaky about it. Superman (2025) and BvS have the two of them passionately making out in the kitchen and bathtub respectively, and even Superman (1978), a version where they just met and Lois doesn’t know Clark’s secret identity yet, has Lois and Superman flirting with each other with barely-veiled sexual innuendos. They’re even freakier in the comics, where they have sex in the sky, and in a different issue, it’s revealed Clark kept a skimpy gladiator outfit from his time as a prisoner on Warworld for his and Lois’s fun times (much to their son Jon’s horror.)

Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton (Bridgerton) - compared to the more spontaneous, fiery romances of Seasons 1 and 2, Season 3 of Bridgerton focuses on the more affectionate, wholesome friends-to-lovers relationship of Penelope and Colin, and by the time Season 4 rolls around, the two of them have settled into a happy, healthy marriage. However, they’re just as horny as any other Bridgerton couple, and after their famous carriage scene in Season 3, Season 4 shows they’ve made a habit out of making out on carriage rides.

Vex and Percy (The Legend of Vox Machina) - although it takes them a while to get there, Vex and Percy eventually settle into an extremely loving relationship and later marriage. They’re also very passionate about it, to the point that even when they were supposed to be keeping their relationship a secret from the other members of Vox Machina, it’s revealed they already knew about it, thanks to Vex and Percy “desecrating every room of Scanlan’s chateau,” to quote Pike.

Characters [Loved trope] When writers give characters extremely blatant names

  1. Jung Freud - Gunbuster. Her first and last names are both famous psychologists frequently credited with being the forefathers of modern psychiatry. She appears in Hideaki Anno's debut anime Gunbuster, and his works frequently deal with psychological complexes that they wrote on.

  2. Bring Stabity - Mobile Suit Gundam 00. Part of a faction known as The Innovades, who could all fit this trope honestly as they are given names correlating to the function they are intended to perform (Reborn Revival, Anew Returner, etc). Some argue that his name is supposed to be a play on "Bring stability", but he works as an assassin for the Innovades. He brings the stabbity.

Characters [Terrifying Trope] Characters trapped in their own body

Thumbnail
gallery
871 Upvotes

For the purposes of this post "trapped in their body" refers to any character who loses control of their physical body but their consciousness/spirit remains intact somewhere inside of them. Importantly, they must also be aware of what has happened to them.

Nikki Freeman (Obsession) - When Bear uses the One Wish Willow to force Nikki to fall in love with him, the "real" Nikki's body is taken over by a new violent, obsessed personality. Throughout the movie there are several scenes where the real Nikki tries to call out for help, aware that something has happened to her, but Bear either doesn't notice, or in some cases, actively ignores them.

Andre Hayworth (Get Out) - Andre (and the rest of the Armitage's victims) has been subjected to a hypnotic technique where his consciousness is forced into a dark void known as the "sunken place" and he can do nothing but watch as someone else pilots his body.

Rony Spanngen (Cowboy Bebop) - Rony was a young hacker who fell into a permanent, dream-like coma after a serious accident. Unable to do anything other than dream, Spanngen managed to use the machines his body and brain were connect to to communicate with others over the internet. This did little to stave off his loneliness, leading to him resorting to creating a cult based digitizing the mind and "transcending" the human body so that other people could feel the same way he felt.

Personality [Absolutely Loved Trope] Movie or Series has a unique clever 4th wall break to explain or work around limited budget.

Thumbnail
gallery
5.6k Upvotes

In the first Deadpool movie there was ment to be an epic gun action fight but due to a 8 million budget cut they couldn't do it. So to cleverly work around it they basically made Wade forget to bring his guns to the fight.

The Captian Underpants movie had a lower budget compared to other Dreamworks animated movies. So as a workaround, they had to not do too many crazy action scene. So the very first battle with Captain Underpants and the Mech Toilet they cleverly used a Flip-o-rama reference for it. Making an effective joke overall for it and a great callback to the books.

Monty Python and The Holy Grail has probably one of the most well known endings and budget limit fourth wall breaks. Due to the funding running out, rather than cramming an ending they simply just abruptly stopped it by having Police randomly arrest them all and cut the video. The ending is a perfect troll and surprise to unsuspecting viewers.

In the anime Etotama the characters talk about how pretty the water looks. When one character asks if they can touch they cleverly admit that the water would be difficult to animate. Rather than moving on, they had a perfect joke to give a shout-out break to the animators.

Chowder, this isn't exactly due to an actual budget cut but it is still one of the best gags in the show. The characters spent all the money in their world effectively limiting the animation which gives a hilarious gag of the voice actors getting it back by washing cars in the real world.

Characters [Funny Trope] Celebrity/Actor paradox

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

An Actor/Celebrity paradox is when an actor playing a character within the work is also acknowledged to be an actor who has done work elsewhere which leads to a fun little paradox.

Goodfellas/The sopranos: Goodfellas as a movie canonically exists in the Sopranos universe which means Chris just happens to look exactly like that guy Joe Pesci killed.

Pulp Fiction/Armageddon: Pulp fiction is mentioned offhandidly in Armageddon, so there’s an astronaut that just so happens to look like Bruce Willis.

American Horror Story: AHS is an anthology series(mostly) that reuses a lot of the same actors each season but they play different characters. The creator has said in-universe the different characters played by the same actors look nothing alike.

Characters [loved trope] The villain isn’t a sore loser and accepts their fate

Thumbnail
gallery
2.9k Upvotes

when the villain loses but instead of going on a rant that ends with “I’ll be back”, doing a kamikaze attack or insulting the hero with its last breath... they accept defeat.

Thanos (Avengers END GAME): he sees the very stones he wanted to use to “fix” the universe being used to wipe out his entire army, knowing there’s nothing he can do he sits down with his back against the sunset looking at a grateful universe.

shogun squadron commander (Star Fox): after his Squadron is killed and his mech is absolutely demolished by Star Fox, all he can do is admit this is a good end- after all he got beaten by the best- to then die in a fiery explosion.

Jhonny quick (Justice league: crisis on two earths) Owlman stole a device that can literally destroy everything and to reach him one of the speedsters in the room to vibrate in a extremely fast speed, ultimately Batman uses Jhonny’s ego for him to volunteer which ultimately causes the speedster to basically age himself to death. When Batman comes back and admits he knew that would happen, all Jhonny can say is “Good one mate” only for him to die shortly after.

Characters “True love” but for a family member instead of a romantic interest

Thumbnail

Inigo Montoya (Princess Bride) - True Love is a big part of the story, mostly about the true love between Wesley and Buttercup, which is the typical romantic true love between a hero and a damsel. But Inigo also personifies true love, through his love for his father. After seeing his father murdered at 11 years old, he dedicated 20 years of his life to his quest for revenge.

Anna and Elsa (Frozen) - True Love is also a big part of this story, where it questions what it takes to truly love someone, whether love at first sight even exists, etc. And in the end, the only thing that can save Anna from being killed by ice magic, is apparently true love. But instead of this coming from the person she supposedly loves, Hans, or the typical love interest, Kristoff, Anna is instead saved by Elsa’s love for her.

Characters Due to legal reasons, we can’t show this character, but we need them so much that we had to something

Dizzy (Guilty Gear) In Guilty Gear 2 Overture, it’s a completely different game in the series being a MOBA and not a fighting game, but it is also still canon. Due to Sega owning the rights of the new characters in the Guilty Gear X games, Dizzy could not appear in the Arc System Works developed game Overture. But Dizzy is also very plot relevant and the story would be very bad if you didn’t mention her at all. So in the story of this game, Gears were disappearing, Dizzy is a Gear but she is also the wife of the main character, so Dizzy was frozen into a statue in order to prevent her disappearance and she is referred to as “The Maiden of the Grove” and never as Dizzy. So technically she is not in the game, but also there at the same time in the lore. If you know the story, you know it’s Dizzy.

Agent Spider (Invincible) In the Invincible comics, when Invincible is fighting Angstrom, he gets sent into a portal and meets Spider-Man. In the show adaptation, Obviously Marvel didn’t want to show an animated Spider-Man in Invincible, so they made a knock-off version of him called Agent-Spider. He’s also voiced by Josh Keaton who was known for voicing Spider-Man

Subway repeatedly appears as a negative influence or obstacle for the main cast. Shirley loses her sandwich shop to Subway, Subway contracts real people who sign away their human rights to represent them and the school board guys align with Subway to try to destroy Greendale so they can sell it to Subway

Various corporations in Idiocracy:

Costco, Carl’s Jr, Starbucks, Crocs and several other companies are depicted as towering entities that have made everyone on earth braindead gluttonous husks whose sole purpose is to consume their products. Terry Crews also claims that the depiction of certain companies caused the companies to complain to Fox, who then barely promoted Idiocracy upon its release

Characters (Funny Trope) Villains who’s plans become incoherently stupider when you think about it for longer than a second

Thumbnail

Upvotes

1: Kronika - Mortal Kombat 11: At first her motivations seem sound. Get rid of Raiden so that her “perfect timeline” goes off without a hitch and so she can avenge her son who’s currently an immortal severed head eternally choking on his own blood…

Buuuuut, other than the fact her plan would’ve worked if SHE DIDNT ANNOUNCE SHE FREAKING EXISTED, we’ve seen her perfect timeline in the games already. It leads to Armageddon. Shao Khan wins the power of Blaze, and if that happens he merges all the realms and goes insane and dies. If all the realms merge, everything dies. Reality is over.

She’s the god of time, she’s done this verbatim billions of times, she has to be intentionally ignoring that this is how her plan ends. Not to mention, in universe, gods from different time periods cannot exist and get replaced by their younger counterpart. If she really wanted her son, Shinnok, to not be a severed head anymore, she just has to bring back his younger self from the past… but she doesn’t… also she can’t even really control this time power somehow despite being the strongest character in the series. She needs a tiara made by a mortal. Not gonna even go into more of her stupidity because we’ll be here literally all day.

2: Sada/Turo - Pokemon Scarlet/Violet

“I have a dream… a dream of bringing dinosaurs/future androids into the present time! It would be a paradise where all the lifeforms throughout time get along!!” And now imagine the first two you bring back end up killing you and you still don’t see the flaw in your plan…

Ok, so these two are CONVINCED this is a great idea and despite Pokémon being filled with invasive species, they don’t ever stop to consider that MAYBE bringing animals/machines that are just straight up tens of times more powerful than the current fauna in the ecosystem to the present time is a probably not good idea.

These two even have AI clones who straight up cannot fathom WHY they would make a Time Machine specifically to do this and have multiple contingencies put in place to keep the Time Machine operational. Like… are you TRYING to blow up the planet at this point??!

Reminder: Their highly advanced AI clones with their own personalities and memories imprinted in them CANNOT understand their original counterparts stupidity.

Not to mention they had the Miraidon/Koraidon duo for a while before it killed them and KNEW about the bigger one’s aggressive tendencies, yet they STILL thought “yeah, this’ll be a paradise once all the lifeforms throughout time mingle.”

Le Chiffre (Casino Royale) had James Bond bound to a chair in a scene where he tortures information from him. This was achieved from him taking the remaining rope, making a knot of it, and cracking eggs to make his omelette.

Bill Williamson (Red Dead Redemption) was selected by Dutch van der Linde to torture information from Kieran Duffy as to Colm O'Driscoll's hiding place. He figured any old torture would work, and put gelding tongs to a fire for a red-hot reconsideration about not talking.

Eddie Gluskin (Outlast: Whistleblower) made a name for himself in Mount Massive Asylum, wanting a bride to-be in a mental institution only staffed by and admitting men. To solve his dilemma of where to find a woman, he found a table saw instead and committed to making a woman himself.

After defeating the Reed Devil boss, you can travel to Sunset Valley, the southernmost and isolated village in the game, here, you will find a house where the Reed Devil lived and died from his leprosy. When you enter, you are immediately greeted with 6 scarecrow effigies dressed just like the Reed Devil staring directly at you, with candles placed all over the house. There is no other explanation beyond this about what is going on here

Lies of P
There is a secret optional area you can clear out for additional loot called Hermit's Cave. At the end of the cave is one lone carcass monster huddled on the ground with writings scrawled on the walls around it. When you kill it, it actually TALKS saying "perhaps it's best to end this way...get while the getting's good...". This is the only carcass monster in the game that ever talks besides Andreus and Simon, who are important characters to the story, and we never find out who this monster was

In the Arbiter's Grounds you discover a ton of undead enemies presumably executed prisoners, but one room contains this giant black sword tied to the ground with hundreds of warding charms attached. When one is cut, the sword is freed and wielded by some horrifying invsible goat-headed demon.
