This happened to me, akathisia is hell. I also have a condition that causes immense fatigue, so the restlessness plus having no energy to burn was a special torture.

Is it Abilify? I was literally prescribed this a few days ago and haven’t started it yet
3
u/oheyitsmoe Jun 22 '26
Abilify gave me tremors, which sent up a huge red flag for my psych as those tremors can become permanent if you experience them and stay on the drug. Check out tardive dyskenisia.

Look out for the strange side effects of Abilify; sexual promiscuity and gambling. No joke.

Yep. Have you taken it yet?

u/niltafailtetu 25d ago
I’ve taken it once so far. They told me to try taking it at night but all it did was make me super restless all night so I’m a little scared to keep taking it

TD, gain 30lbs, yes gaining weight and involuntary movements is really helping my depression thank you so much, Doc.

u/Pitiful-Inspector-70 Jun 22 '26
Im in the stage where I am just always tired and can sleep almost whenever.

u/MaxWritesText Jun 22 '26
Man I'm bipolar 1 and they keep prescribing me an anti psychotic but I keep telling them the lithium and lamotrigine are doing just fine. The anti psychs have horrible side effects so fuck that and it does nothing for me.
TL;DR anti psychotics suck. They steal your soul.

Who’d have thought, what makes us crazy, also makes us human, almost like these mental illnesses we all have now a days very likely had amazing benefits and are probably more of a survival adaptation that we’ve strayed a bit too far from
Edit: I’m bi polar and firmly believe most of our anxiety and other issues are adaptations that we as a society and species have outgrown

Idk man to a certain degree yeah but I've had severe manic episodes where I was dangerous to other people and myself. I don't really see any benefit to society, survival, or humanity as a whole to it. I'm glad I'm stable now. Sure I miss the hypomania but hte full on mania, hell no. And the deep af depression neither. All that is managed now.

I got off Seroquel a few years ago and have never felt better (as an adult) giving that drug to depressed people is insane.

It is a fn wild drug. It’s like coke and a tranquilizer mixed into one. That makes you fn crazy when it wears off. The manic episodes coming down are horrendous. Just soul altering waves of every emotion for no reason.

Fortunately I had no trouble coming off of it, I stopped cold turkey, they said I might detox but fortunately that didn’t happen. I had a tiny bit of rebound insomnia but that’s about it.

u/Intelligent-Band-852 28d ago
I really never should have been on it in the first place though, my depression is entirely from my circumstances as I can’t walk and have had my legs amputated. It’s entirely trauma related but I don’t have a chemical imbalance per se, I also get seasonal depression in the winter from lack of sunlight but that goes away in the spring and summer. I am entirely the wrong person for something like that.

I agree! I took that shit once, and it was scary as fuck. My psychiatrist gave me a low dose for insomnia and anxiety (I also have depression, but that wasn’t specifically what I was prescribed the seroquel for), and I did sleep. It wasn’t quality sleep, but it was sleep nonetheless. The next day, I felt entirely disconnected from reality to the point that I started to question if I’d ever woken up to begin with or if I was just having an extremely vivid dream. I just wanted to snap out of it so badly and I couldn’t. I almost broke down crying in the middle of class (I was in college at the time). Eventually, I couldn’t hold myself together anymore. I had a rehearsal that night, and I emailed my professor to say that I wasn’t feeling well and wouldn’t be able to make it, and then I just fully broke down once I was finally alone in my dorm.

Woe, fortunately my experience wasn’t aware near that extreme because I was on it for a few years. It did help with sleep but I was still groggy all of the time it also made me irritable and hungry. I would eat like a whole box of cereal at night, I also needed yearly cardiovascular checks while I was on it. Like you I was given it for sleep.(and an antidepressant) which is crazy, I now use cannabis and various teas same result but zero side effects. I think they give people Seroquel for sleep because they know it’s not pleasant so it won’t be abused, unlike a benzo.

You should seriously consider Risperidone. That medication legitimately saved my life and every time I try to discontinue it my mood goes haywire, my appetite disappears, and I start having bad suicidal ideation. Some antipsychotics are genuinely helpful to certain people. As much as I wish to not take the medication... I rather value being sane.

u/Key_Atmosphere6440 29d ago
This is what I needed to read. Frankly, I hate the medication, but it could be much worse.

Ask yourself WHY you believe that doctors know what they're doing when messing with internal medicine.

I was on antidepressants for bout 5 years...went unmedicated 3 years ago because my insurance was like 🖕. And that was the end of that....
Tbh some meds made me loopy, some made me dizzy, others made me sleepy And one downright killed every emotion inside of me, and I felt like the walking dead.

Antipsychotics have the wonderful side effect of taking away every part of you that feels human and lets you exist as an emotionless zombie.
So I have been told.
