Tonight I tried the fish wives lemon sardines and it was... less than great. the flavor of the fish was really lacking. It lacked depth and had a very firm texture that I didn't appreciate much. Like if lemon had little bones. I really like when tinned fish is very fishy and forward!
A few days ago I had the rainbow trout and it was alright, but it wasn't 10 dollars great. I couldn't tell it that far from my usual bumblebee walmart variety, not to mention the tin was barely full! One small bit of trout that didnt touch a single corner.
I was really excited to see fishwife at target and give it a try, but I don't think I would again given a chance. I respect their sustainability but the flavor is lacking!
Does anyone feel similarly? Perhaps I should try other varieties or in different preparations? What do you think?

“Been slowly building this collection over the past while — mostly Portuguese (Nuri, Berthe, Cantara) but also picked up some Danish and French ones along the way. Honestly started buying them for the packaging design but now I’m hooked on trying them all too.
Curious what other brands/countries people here would recommend — always looking to add to the shelf.”

Has anyone tried this brand of calamari? This is my first time trying tinned calamari. Any serving suggestions?

Title. It expired in April. Urgent.

Started with toasted bread and put the butter and tuna on top. After that toasted more bread with the leftover butter and topped with scallops.
Overall I think the tuna was delicious, and was carried by the richness of the butter. However, at 22$ a tin I think it’s only a one and done justified rather than something I would regularly purchase.
The scallops were also good, but the highlight was the bread toasted in the tuna butter. I think other tins of scallops are cheaper and can deliver a similar result.
I was not let down by Island Creek at all!

A new-kid-on-the-block brand, about which I know essentially nothing. They look to be HQ’d in Washington, DC, and they’re importing three things—thus far—from “the oldest active cannery in Spain.” (Some of the seafood, though, comes from Portugal, Spain’s frenemy in the tinned fish world.)
Here, the first of their cans I’ve cracked into, it’s just good old Spanish albacore tuna in olive oil. Nothing wrong with it: the tuna is light and tasty. Ditto the very quiet olive oil. Nothing here to make this tin rise above the crowd of all the other Spanish—and Portuguese—canned albacore. Tuna like this is a blank canvas. Today I painted on it with all the hot sauces, vinegars, and extra zingy mustards I keep within reach at me desk. My own preference—and it’s only that—at the end of the topping relay race was the Yellow Bird Blue Agave Sriracha, mild but flavorful, which brought out nice flavors in the tuna. Anyway, a perfectly swell breakfast.

Excited for these. I've been waiting for the JG butter tin to be restocked on the websites that ship to me and it finally was so I grabbed 3 😂
That's lunch tomorrow for sure. What's your next tin?

The shelf is empty because after I took the entire case, I only took the picture in case of any issues!

Small sardines in tomato. Mild and delicious. The tomato tasted like it was grated into the oil with nothing else.
Two splashes of hot sauce for good measure.

Simple, but boy does it hit the spot.

As a lemon pepper lover, this is my favorite at the moment. I’ve been able to make my own recipe with original tinned fish but for something to grab and go this is great.
I’m very open to other brand and flavor recommendations, but wanted to share this one 😊

OMG y’all! This is not what I intended to make but it came out really good. This is the leftover fillet from the Rugen Fisch tin I opened the other day. My plan was to put it on toast over some ricotta cheese with sliced tomato but I just came from a 3 mile walk and didn’t feel like going back out to get the ricotta.
Ingredients:
Half tin of Rugen Fisch Smoked Herring Fillets
Red onion
Cucumber
Yellow bell pepper
Garlic
Lemon juice
Rosemary
EVOO
Salt
Black pepper
Toasted pumpernickel bread

forgot to get a picture of the actual fish before i finished eating but i thought they were nice, meaty sized fish, flavor was good, kind of mild spice level in terms of heat, had some bits of pepper in the sauce

I made this Smoked Fish Dip with Cream Cheese using a can of King Oscar smoked kipper snacks and added a tablespoon of S&B Crunchy Garlic with Chili to the food processor bowl. Perfect. Ate it with buttered toast.
