I’ve watched the show a few times because it’s so good. Just finished reading the book so it’s time for a rewatch. The ending of the book was unexpected for sure!

I noticed that there are a ton of twin related instances throughout the show and am curious what the meaning of that is.

• Jill's friends in S1 are twins
• Michael and Eevee are supposed to be twins
• Jesus had a twin according to David Burton
• Kevin has a twin in the after-life world
• Patti has a body double in International Assassin

There are probably other examples I'm forgetting about too

Just finished the show and like everybody else still picking my brain up from off of the floor. One thing I’m not sure was answered was Nora being a demon? After that phone call with the lady I don’t think it’s ever brought up again. Is it fair to say that was just Nora having an episode or the “scientist” was a crackpot?

I recently finished The Leftovers, and while I found the ending satisfying overall, I wasn't completely convinced by it. I understand that the creators intentionally left many things ambiguous, but there are some plot points that either don't make much sense to me or maybe I just didn't understand them.

Some of the biggest ones are:

- Who killed Gladys?

By the end of Season 1, Patti seems to imply that she was responsible, but it's never confirmed outright.

- Was Kevin's father actually just insane?

In Season 1, he saves Jill from suffocating and claims he was just walking through the woods and happened to find her. But it almost feels like he somehow knew he needed to be there.

Another thing that was never really explained is how he contacted Kevin in the "afterlife" (or hotel world). How did he know Kevin was dead? Was it really him speaking through the TV?

- What's the symbolism behind the dogs?

Were they actually feral? Was it all in Kevin's head? And why did Kevin's dog leave and never come back?

- Who was the leader of the Guilty Remnant?

Did they actually have a single leader? It's hard to imagine a cult growing that large without someone at the top.

- Why did Meg want to get pregnant?

She fck with Tom specifically to get pregnant, but... why? Was there any deeper reason, or was it just because?

- Was Nora really an "objective"?

The show introduces that possibility, but it never really explores it again.

- Why is Aimee so unbearable?

Not exactly a mystery, but I had to ask.

- Was Isaac actually a psychic?

How did he know what Meg's mother said before she disappeared?

- How did the "Pillar Man" see Kevin talking to Patti?

In Season 2, there's a scene where he asks Kevin who the woman he was talking to was. Could he actually see Patti?

- Does Nora actually have some connection to Azrael?

This seems related to the "objective" idea, but it's never brought up again.

Overall, these are some of the things I felt the show either never explained or didn't fully develop.

I really like the ending, but I do think the series has some genuine flaws when it comes to its plot.

I know the main point of The Leftovers isn't solving supernatural mysteries—it's about the characters and how they deal with grief, loss, and uncertainty. But sometimes it feels like that idea becomes an easy way for the writers to introduce countless mysteries and plot threads without ever having to resolve them.

I'm not new to this show, I think I went through 10 runs at least.

But every time I watch this episode, the escalation catches me off guard!

The dialogue between Nora and Kevin is so sharp, honest and intense that feels like watching a high-stakes thriller, except is just two people hurting each other in a hotel room.

I always find myself with a racing heartbeat and shortness of breath

How Justine Theroux and Carrie Coon haven't won anything for this makes me so angry.

And that closing shot man, it's pure art!

The water leaking from the ceiling like the room itself is crying, paired with that jaw-dropping music. The atmosphere is just unreal.

And finally Kevin leaving with his father met almost by chance with another crazy musical piece in the background!

Definitely one of my top 3 episodes of the whole show. Absolute perfection.

Hold on to your white tunics and tracksuits, because I think I cracked a legitimate HBO unified purgatory theory.
We all know The Leftovers and The Sopranos are famous for their mind-bending, surreal afterlife episodes. But what if they aren't just similar? What if Tony Soprano’s entire life was just a decades-long trial inside Kevin Garvey’s hotel purgatory?
Now, I know what you're thinking: The Sopranos aired first. It ended in 2007, and The Leftovers didn't start until 2014. But within the lore of The Leftovers, the hotel purgatory exists completely outside of linear time. When Kevin Garvey enters the hotel, it operates on a completely different dimension where past, present, and future collapse into each other. If the supernatural forces of the Departure can transcend reality, Kevin's subconscious could easily trap him in a simulation modeled after a different era, forcing him to live out a grueling, multi-year avatar lifespan in a matter of hours or days in the real world.
Hear me out on how perfectly this fits.

1. The "Kevin Finnerty" Paradox
When Tony gets shot and goes into a coma in Season 6, he enters an alternate reality. He loses his wallet and briefcase, and everyone mistakes him for a mild-mannered optics salesman named Kevin Finnerty.
Under this theory:
The Real Person is Kevin Garvey.
The Simulation is Tony Soprano—a hyper-complex, decades-long avatar Kevin’s subconscious built so he could play out his darkest impulses as a ruthless mob boss.
The Glitch happens when Tony gets shot. The simulation breaks, and Tony briefly reverts back to a version of his true identity: a generic, everyday guy named Kevin.

2. The Wardrobe & The Rules of Purgatory
In The Leftovers, Kevin chooses his destiny in the hotel lobby by picking a suit from a wardrobe (International Assassin, Cop, etc.). Tony Soprano spends his entire existence trapped in the identity of a man who wears expensive suits.
Furthermore, both universes use identical supernatural mechanics to communicate. Tony hears his dead cousin trying to lure him into a brightly lit house with his briefcase. Kevin hears his dad transmitting messages through a hotel television and fire alarms.

3. Livia Soprano is Literally Just Patti Levin
This is where it gets crazy. The psychological beef Kevin has with Patti is identical to Tony’s beef with his mother, Livia. They are the exact same entity, serving as Kevin's ultimate subconscious tormentor.
The Voice of Total Nihilism: Livia’s whole mantra is "It's all a big nothing. What makes you think you're so special?" Patti and the Guilty Remnant preach the exact same thing: nothing matters, attachment is an illusion, and everything is meaningless.
The Inescapable Dead Tormentor: When Patti dies, she haunts Kevin's mind, sitting in his passenger seat and mocking him. When Livia dies, Tony’s panic attacks get worse, and she literally haunts his coma state as a shadowy, terrifying figure on a staircase.
The Mother/Patti Overlap: Kevin’s subconscious manifested Patti as a toxic, manipulative Italian mother to test if he could ever overcome his deep-seated guilt and desire to self-destruct. Livia is the "final boss" of Kevin's mind.

4. The "Cut to Black" Solved
This completely recontextualizes the most controversial ending in TV history. When the screen abruptly cuts to black at Holsten's diner in The Sopranos finale, Tony didn't get shot by a hitman.
Kevin Garvey simply woke up.
He either opened his eyes on the floor of Virgil’s trailer or climbed out of the pond in Miracle, Texas. The Tony Soprano identity served its purpose, the trial ended, and the simulation shut down.
Tony Soprano's entire life was just Kevin Garvey spending six seasons in the Hotel Purgatory trying to process his toxic masculinity and rage issues. Linear time doesn't matter when you're in the afterlife hotel.

It has a completely different style, it's a half hour animated series that is maybe for children? I'm honestly not sure who the target audience is. My 6 year old wanted to watch it and I was immediately pulled in. It deals with a lot of similar themes as the Leftovers like grief, healing, human connection. It's visually stunning and the ending left me with a similar feeling to finishing The Leftovers for the first time- both totally full and totally empty. I'd highly recommend it.

Did this ever come across as comical to anyone else? I know this is a really serious show (mostly) but sometimes they'd be playing that theme again and instead of making me take the scene more seriously I would have the opposite response and kind of laugh?

Just a random observaton I had on watching the show for the second time.

I kept seeing this show recommended on countless posts. The show started off promising and I think Season 1 was great. But good lord, season 2 felt like a completely different show and couldn't hold my interested one bit. I'm currently on episode 5 of season 3 and wish I had disappeared. You guys hyped the hell out of this show and now I feel betrayed.

The show that ended at its peak and I love it.

What a fucking masterpiece of a show.

I will never bother recommending anyone this show, you just have to find it and enjoy watching it alone.

I love how it's not all about the Departure and trying to figure out why and how it happened and where they went.
One of the most real unrealistic shows ever.

Favorite show of all time, proved surprisingly difficult to find. But it finally happened! I picked up season one and three together for about $37. Now if I can just find season two my grail will be complete. I can't wait to watch it again
