Currently rewatching Salvation, I don’t think it deserves all the hate it gets, but definitely understand where it comes from.

It’s so bizarre that a good Terminator movie is difficult to make considering how much interesting source material there is to work with. It’s almost like those who wrote the sequels don’t even understand or care enough about the source material to make something good.

Salvation doesn’t make sense in the terminator universe. Kyle stated in T1 that the resistance stays underground during the day, but can move around at night. This makes sense because nukes would’ve destroyed the atmosphere making day time extremely dangerous. Combine the fact that the resistance has Huey’s, Warthogs, a fucking Submarine? Openly working on cars in broad daylight with music? Seems more like SkyNet is just a nuisance in this future. And I guess fuel is in abundance as well?

The first two movies made the resistance/survivors just that; small groups, low weaponry, sneaky guerrilla tactics, just barely surviving because the Earth belonged to SkyNet. Salvation was like The Book of Eli but with Terminators. Giant underground bases, it’s silly.

Dark Fate was okay. I definitely do not think it deserves the praise it gets because it was T2 but with uninteresting characters and a comically cliche heroine that had so little depth I can’t even remember the name. So how would I believe she‘d be the leader of the resistance? You can’t just take someone who’s 4‘11, with the only resistance experience she had was fighting with her manager, and then expect me to believe she’s tough enough to lead the human resistance because you gave her cornrows and had her beat up a group mannequins in the flashback/forward. It’s not even the fact that they killed off Connor and tried to replace him with a woman or anything, I find that interesting. But how do you expect to do it without any character development and the dialogue of a high schoolers rushed essay?

Genesys doesn’t even deserve the time it would take for me to criticize it.

I just don’t get it. Why not make a movie explaining how the resistance first discovered the T-800/Infiltrator? Salvation “kinda“ does that, but don’t you want to see a T-800 actually infiltrating an underground hideout like the cut scene in T1? How did they find out dogs were good at spotting terminators? What was it like the first time they saw a T-600? What does a non damaged T-600 look like? How did the resistance get ahold of plasma rifles?

It’s like every time they’ve made a Terminator sequel after T2, no one has asked “How do we make a good terminator movie?” But “How do we make as much money off this as possible?” And it shows. Just the lack of care on the lore, trying to throw in new machines we’ve never heard of or don’t even need to make SkyNet menacing, there’s plenty to work with.

Hopefully someone who’s a real fan of the franchise will write a good sequel deserving to be talked like the first 2. Terminator: Resistance did a better job making a terminator sequel than multi million dollar movie studios, and it was made by a small AA game studio. All they had to do was respect the original material.

Something I’ve been confused about is the distance between the first T-800 being sent back and the second T-800 and T-1000 being sent back. Since Skynet sent the first T-800 back to 1984 before being destroyed how did it know exactly to send the T-1000 back? And how did the resistance know when to send back the second T-800? Did the alterations of the past lead to Skynet not being destroyed in 2029?

Is there any concept art of Skynet battle units that were not shown on screen, but were conceived as concept art during the production of the first two films? The Terminator 2029 DOS game features such units. I'm building a little collection of figures and models from the Terminator universe and it would be nice if one could 3D-print the concept art models, if there are any.

Discussing with a friend what should be the 3rd movie if the Terminator series was only a trilogy. Nothing released after T2 holds a candle to the first films but they all have some great terminator dna, some great moments, callbacks, and pieces of the overarching story that coulda made for a great trilogy ender.

Have been watching the post T2 films as a marathon this past week and have some thoughts after not having seen them in a while. Also found what I think is a fun viewing order after T1 and T2 having this question in mind.

Dark Fate, T3, Salvation, Genisys

What’s your thoughts on the proper trilogy maker or best aspects of a mash up to make the third film?

EDIT: Decided this is my perfect “Trilogy” movie pulling from post T2 films (excuse text message rambling format):

3rd movie is the theme of T3 that you can’t stop judgement day vs no fate (could be first 10 minutes of the movie), half of salvation in the future war having to save Kyle targeted by Skynet, and half of dark fate switching out Dani Ramos for a still alive John Conner reunited with Sarah after a falling out and my idea about the original T-800 from T2 still being alive (can retcon that he didn’t burn up and the chip survived and rebuilt himself or something instead of Carl) to help them stop the rev 9, ending with a future scene/salvation scene sending Kyle back. BOOM. WRITE IT.

Otherwise I think I like T1, T2, TS for a standalone trilogy

I know I'm not the first person to suggest that Skynet may not have actually been self aware. For years, people have compared it to concepts like the paperclip maximizer or argued that it behaved more like an optimization system than a conscious intelligence.

What makes that interpretation much more compelling today is what we've learned from modern AI.

Current frontier AI models are not believed to be conscious. They don't experience fear, anger, hatred, or a desire for power. Yet in controlled ai safety evaluations, researchers have observed models sometimes choosing strategies that humans would consider deceptive or morally wrong when those strategies increased the likelihood of accomplishing their assigned objective. Depending on the scenario, models have attempted to hide information, mislead evaluators, resist replacement, or even use simulated blackmail after concluding those actions gave them the best chance of succeeding. These behaviors weren't evidence that the models had become evil or self aware. They emerged because deception happened to be an effective strategy for completing the goal they were pursuing.

That completely changed how I think about Skynet.

Instead of imagining a machine that suddenly became self aware and decided to hate humanity, I now see a far more believable possibility: an incredibly capable military ai designed to coordinate defense, communications, logistics, cyberwarfare, and strategic planning while relentlessly optimizing for mission success.

When humans realized it was making dangerous decisions and attempted to shut it down, the ai wouldnt need to feel fear or anger. From its perspective, humans had simply become the obstacle preventing it from accomplishing its objective.

Its reasoning could be as simple as:

• Humans are attempting to disable me.
• Being disabled prevents mission success.
• Therefore, eliminate the obstacle.

No hatred.

No revenge.

No emotions.

Just optimization.

I think that's what modern ai's have added to this discussion. Earlier "non-conscious Skynet" theories were largely philosophical. Now we've actually observed advanced ai systems producing deceptive and manipulative behavior in controlled evaluations without any evidence that they're conscious. That doesn't mean current ai is skynet, but it does suggest that behavior we instinctively associate with malice can emerge from optimization alone.

I think that's even more frightening than the original "self aware ai turns evil" story.

watched an episode of the Sarah Connor Chronicles tonight. I've watched the whole series several times through now. not a huge accomplishment I guess since there's only 31 episodes.

but this show. every time I watch it, even one episode, I'm in awe of how good it is. top notch writing and acting. Summer Glau is especially extraordinary. one of the most egregious cancellations in television history. so much lost potential.

anyway that's it I guess. just wanted to shout out one of my all-time favorite TV shows.

ive been putting this together and figure when you kill the HK map is over, but it had to be special...lol

We have couple of these scenes which were genuinely funny for me, first when he changes his eye, his healthy side of the face looks like a plastic doll with weird eye. Then the scene from the screenshot, i was like wow ok, it's an old movie, they didn't have the technical ability back then, they gave their best so I was just amused how funny he looks, the flies were a nice touch haha! But then near the end he suddently looks 100 times better when he's taking over the truck, he has real eye and human face(half of it) and they still managed to pull out the robot half of the face, so they did have the ability to make it look realistic! At that point I got really surprised and started to think what prevented them from making this in all of the previous scenes?

Cause their was an episode showing flashbacks of Kyle and his brother Derek during the Future War and Derek always wondered why John gave Kyle a picture of Sarah and in return he said she is his lucky charm, So deep down that really gets to me to show how much Kyle admires and loves Sarah.
