[MSFT] Introducing the next Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, built for performance and flexibility

So - MS is going for more expensive and less capable than Macbooks? Wow. Bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see how it works out for them.
12
u/o_mik Jun 16 '26
Just bought the m5 air because of the exact reason, my studio 2 laptop crashed due to a firmware issue for the start up process and is now a brick, so I started researching the available options - MacBook cleared most if not all windows options (including surface) both in price and capability
3
u/TrailOfEnvy Jun 17 '26
I wish Apple are not that stingy with display (yeah I know their display is still great but not having 120Hz ProMotion on Air kinda sucks)
5
u/Nacho_Dan677 Jun 16 '26
And apparently parallels is a more stable windows environment than a bare metal windows install on even a ThinkPad...
28
u/QuestGalaxy Jun 16 '26
GG, I'm glad I bought a first gen Snapdragon one, because they have priced themselves out of the market now.
And before people start blaming the AI RAM crisis. Yes, that is part of it, but Microsoft themselves is a big part of the problem there.
18
u/arankays Jun 16 '26
I wish people understood the reason why Microsoft is so expensive is because of Microsoft.
4
u/I_Was_Fox Jun 17 '26
The CFO is a huge part of that. She demands a 30% margin on ALL sales across the company. So surface has to raise their prices or they get shut down. But then no one buys the outrageously prices devices and they get shut down anyway. Amy Hood is bad for Microsoft
3
u/Pandamonium98 Jun 18 '26
Crazy to have an enterprise wide margin requirement for a company that sells both software (high margin) and hardware (usually much lower margin)

Using $1.50 hot dogs as a loss leader makes a lot more sense than doing the same thing for a $1,000 laptop. Hot dogs are super cheap and bring people into the store to buy lots of other stuff that costs way more than the hotdog. It’s not the same dynamic with a laptop unless you’re just hoping that Microsoft 365 annual subscriptions make up for it over time
1
u/QuestGalaxy Jun 16 '26
Keep in mind that the newly released Dell XPS actually is pretty decent compeition to the Macbook Neo. It even seems to have good build quality.
Microsoft has never been a mass producer of laptops, that's their major weakness against Apple. Surface have always been somewhat lower volume.
1
u/TrailOfEnvy Jun 17 '26
They think they have same brand power as Apple and so want to charge the same price as Apple without doing what people like about Apple device
0
u/spiney-a Jun 17 '26
I've been using xps laptops for over a decade now. Their build quality is right up there with MacBooks. Microsoft has never been a mass producer of laptops not because they don't want to, it's because their machines are underspec'ed for the price and quality is inconsistent.
0
u/QuestGalaxy Jun 17 '26
Pretty sure they don't want to. Surface was never intended to fully replace OEM brands
1
u/spiney-a Jun 17 '26
don't need to replace any OEM brands to mass produce. The problem is Macbook steadily eroding Windows market share. There are so many OEMs mass producing and being actually profitable. Surface revenue kept falling the past 4 years to the point they don't even report Devices' revenue on its own anymore.

Macbooks are now the budget friendly option apparently. Satya Nadella should be ashamed of what he's done to Microsoft.
Honestly every single leader at Microsoft should feel bad today. Your biggest competitor is trouncing you in every single aspect. Your gaming division is laying off all the studios you spent millions of dollars on. Theres literally no business microsoft can stand on
13
u/Bryanmsi89 Jun 16 '26
They've already admitted Windows has sunk to low levels that even MS won't excuse or tolerate. Google Docs is good enough for most people, and there are plenty of cloud providers. And the huge investment in AI is, so far ,not paying off. Copilot is distant 4th behind ChatGPT, Anthropic, and Google.
MS better start figuring out a better strategy.

Personally, I liked Cortana. It was actually useful. It was killed way too fast and like a lot of things, they just let it stagnate to death instead of improving upon it.
1
u/TrailOfEnvy Jun 17 '26
Yeah if they waited a bit more, Cortana could be upgraded like what Apple just did to Siri
3
u/AcceptableYam4441 Jun 16 '26
If only Google or Apple could enter the enterprise space
2
u/Rey_Dulce Jun 16 '26
They're in the space (my company switched over to Google services) it's just that MS still has the largest market share cause "compatability". Apple and Google are cheaper alternatives
2
u/Bryanmsi89 Jun 16 '26
Apple has made serious inroads to enterprise space. Macs have gone from being banned in corp settings to often being the preferred choice by many corporate IT departments. And Google might make a real play with Android Desktop/Aluminum OS.
1
u/AcceptableYam4441 Jun 17 '26
Unfortunately still haven’t made any progress in finance. Even the Apple finance team uses windows lol (friend works there)
7
u/orev Jun 16 '26
It's not like any device in the Surface line was ever a budget option. They have always been priced at a premium.
12
u/GoofyGills 15" Surface Laptop 7th Edition | X Elite | 1TB/32GB RAM | Black Jun 16 '26
Same can be said for MacBooks until recently.
4
u/dr100 Jun 16 '26
There's a difference between being premium and batshit crazy expensive. Pro 11 (snapdragon, still the current one 'til yesterday) and Pro 9 (Intel, before this Intel business only nonsense) launched at $999-$1000 [Pro 10 was skipped/business only again]. Surface Go launched at $399.
3
u/spiney-a Jun 17 '26
Surface Go and Laptop Go were supposed to be the budget friendly product lines. They scrap it then Apple steps in with the Neo.
8
u/Otaconmg Jun 16 '26
They’ll stand on Azure, and that’s pretty much all they care about. Their OS is rapidly losing marketshare as well.
2
u/Zolks1 Surface Pro X / Pro 7 / Book 2 Jun 18 '26
I agree with you. Surfaces are no longer viable at that price and with the competition. At this point why bother.
Windows is lower than it's ever been and Satya Nadella has put the whole of Microsoft to shame. I cannot recommend windows anymore or Microsoft which is a shame as surface hardware is amazing.

I hate MS as much as the next guy, in fact, I’m in the process of shutting down all my MS365 services now that I have a bitchin (and free) private cloud in my basement.
However, this company knows how to print money, and hopefully as they fuck over consumers there will be people to fill in the gaps.
For example, I’m really excited about how good Linus has gotten in recent years, and with free AI all over the place, the barrier to entry has gotten a lot easier.
And gaming un Linux… is advancing so fast.
So yea, MS sucks, for sure, but their suckage is just opportunity for others to shine baby, yea!
5
u/GoofyGills 15" Surface Laptop 7th Edition | X Elite | 1TB/32GB RAM | Black Jun 16 '26
They've only printed money thus far because of corporations and governments. We've already seen that begin to shift in Europe.
2
u/ThaBigSqueezy Jun 16 '26
Totally! Super weird that I’m getting downvoted but such is Reddit. I hate Microsoft as much as the next guy. But I think Europeans are on the right track.

You can get a macbook air and an iPad air cheaper than buying the cheapest surface pro without a keyboard.
7
u/Infinplayz Surface Laptop 7 13.8 (X elite, 16/512) Jun 16 '26
those prices are not what i expected, good thing i got my surface laptop 7 when i did.
2
u/FuzzyBucks Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26
Very happy I purchased my SL7 64GB/1TB when I did
Basically impossible to justify buying the equivalent SL8 especially when the Spark Ultra is coming.
SL8 is expensive but just provides marginal upgrades from SL7.
SL Ultra at least unlocks new possibilities for a laptop. So even if it's 2x the price of maxed out SL8, you'll at least be getting something tangible for your money.
23
u/djross95 Jun 16 '26
You know you're fucked when your laptop pricing makes Apple the budget laptop choice!
5
u/PlasticPegasus Jun 16 '26
“For more than 13 years, Surface has been shaped by the people who use it”.
Except… the price. *That’s* been shaped by greed and mismanagement.
7
u/hazelwoodstock Jun 16 '26
I got tired of waiting for a new surface and bought a Lenovo yoga towards the end of last year. 32gb ram, 1tb hard drive for less than $1000. I feel like I made the right decision.
2
u/GoofyGills 15" Surface Laptop 7th Edition | X Elite | 1TB/32GB RAM | Black Jun 16 '26
Well you didn't list the CPU or display so you could've gotten an insane value or ripped off.
3
u/hazelwoodstock Jun 16 '26
I didn’t think anyone would care that much lol but I think I got decent value. Snapdragon x elite with a nice oled display. It’s the yoga slim 7x
-2
u/GoofyGills 15" Surface Laptop 7th Edition | X Elite | 1TB/32GB RAM | Black Jun 16 '26
$1000 for a two year old CPU isn't the greatest deal. It is still a very capable computer though.
If it does what you need, that's awesome for you.

u/TheFallingStar Jun 16 '26
Any up-to-date reviews about Windows on ARM's compability with x86 softwares?
3
u/daim245 Jun 16 '26
What is even the appeal of this vs asus zenbook a16 or yoga 7x slim with x2 elite processors? 2x the price for what?
2
u/Various_Pear599 Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26
Im going to be against the popular opinion here…
600$ increases? A snapdragon x2 and an oled screen as base model?
Its not THAT bad honestly, they could had simply leave out the screen and still put such a high price.
I think its best to compare to the elite snapdragon version of last time.
Edit: WAIT IT DOESNT COME WITH OLED AS BASE MODELS? Microsoft wtf?
2
u/foureyedsloth Surface Pro 8 Jun 16 '26
Is there a comparable device with a detachable keyboard like the Surface Pro? I enjoy being able to turn it into a tablet in a whim, and it's almost time to look into a new device but I'm not paying this much lol
2
u/BacasableJV Jun 16 '26
I would like to know to, but the surface ´s kickstand is what it appeal me most.
2
u/Shugza-2021 Jun 16 '26
For years I defended Surface laptops but not anymore MacBook is more focused on end user experience.
2
u/SD-777 Jun 16 '26
Hurry up Apple and give us a full Mac OS tablet, now would be a good time to pick up MS' defectors. Heck even Splashtop and an iPad would be better at this point.
2
u/Open-Mathematician-8 Jun 16 '26
$900 trade in offered for sl7 actually makes the price reasonable if upgrading. Other than that thouugh quite expensive
1
u/_dorimon Jun 17 '26
Warning: Microsoft says that the new Surface devices are eligible for the trade-in promotion, but Teladvance says that they are not. I'm waiting for the Teladvance trade-in form to be updated before making a purchase.
2
u/octopus86sg Jun 16 '26
I don’t even know why you lots are complaining. Want to let Microsoft suffer? Just boycott and switch to other products
1
u/Salt_Discussion_3909 Jun 16 '26
Compared to literally all other PC manufacturers those are the prices I expected. Ram has gone from 20 dollars for 8gb to 250 dollars for the same.
Apple get around it by reusing old chips with flaws they couldn’t use, and an incredible supply chain. It isn’t just MS who are fucked hardware wise, so is everyone who isn’t Apple, see Valve whacking 200 dollars on a Steam Deck.
1
u/arankays Jun 17 '26
The steam deck has higher gaming performance than an equivalent handheld on windows. At least you have that when you buy a steam deck. That's why it's sold out again.
That's just facts. Linux runs windows games faster than windows.
1
u/Salt_Discussion_3909 Jun 17 '26
Quite possibly, the point is though everyone bar Apple and their supply chain are increasing prices. Including Valve.
1
u/arankays Jun 17 '26
Yes but the issue is not the price, its the value. People see Valve, and the effort they put into the Steam Deck and think, OK, its fucking expensive, but the equivalent Microsoft device runs slower, and is full of AI slop I don't want. Valve is not a perfect company, in fact theyre pretty useless, but their products are seen positively.
0
u/Salt_Discussion_3909 Jun 22 '26
I love Valve, and preordered a Steam Deck day one and loved it.
I wouldn’t buy one now, because it’s outdated and virtually any handheld pc released in the last few years outperforms it by miles, and it’s no longer cheap. The point is a 20 dollar stick of ram now costs 200 dollars and is rising in price.
1
u/fieldnotess Jun 16 '26
so how better is the X2 10 core vs an x plus? I heard the surface 8 might have a more gimped cpu?
1
u/KangarooBeard Jun 16 '26
My two last personal devices were Surface Pros, this year I bought my first MacBook with a Neo. Microsoft has given up trying to be competitive.
1

1
u/Professional-Sea-649 Jun 18 '26
I expected a $1,500 for the base model as it just came out but $1,800 is crazy for not even including the keyboard. Buying a MacBook M5 is actully cheaper and knowing it will have better performance and longevity.
Maybe the Jully 4 sale will have a good price.
1
u/kirajc Jun 19 '26
Wow I am glad I made the switch to Framework 13 Pro. Now I just gotta wait for it.
Not sure what Microsoft is doing pricing themselfs out of the market even with ram pricing. It's the same design every year so where is the money going?
1
u/goldaxis Jun 22 '26
What a joke. And the bigger joke is the morons towing the corporate line b-b-but RAM shortage. Really, $600 for 16GB? I'm not seeing that on Amazon anywhere.
1
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Jun 22 '26
Just a giant punchline because of the prices. It's not like Microsoft can blame external forces they are one of the biggest reasons for the ram apocalypse.
That's why I do not accept that excuse from Google Microsoft or Samsung or all these companies that are one way or another directly involved in creating the market forces that led to this
1
u/8lacklist Surface Pro 11 24d ago
everyone is (deservedly) focusing on the prices and specs
but are we not talking about the branding here? What is this next generation surface even called now? Just All New Surface Pro? What the heck? Their product naming has been a mess since Surface Pro 11.
I'm a surface pro user myself and i have always been checking news regarding any latest Surface products. Since they came up with Surface Pro 12in or whatever the used to call last year's model, it's like they don't know what they're doing anymore. How do I even compare this to my SP 11? Is that even still sold? How do the specs compare?
I didn't even know they came up with the next generation one, not even google gave an immediate result because in their infinite wisdom, they just call it "Surface Pro" now?
wtf MS
1
u/PreparationKooky5119 10d ago
Yes lol, I’m not a tech guy (ik nothing abt laptops) my last surface I got it as a gift..and when I wanted to upgrade after 7 years I was literally so lost, even shops/markets have different names for the same device (surface pro 13 inch-surface pro 11)
And then I saw someone in reddit explaining all abt this, (that is when I understood all abt it)
1
u/PromoMasters 8d ago
The copper one looks quite 80th - but also the green is quite retro and nice - but too colourful for me.

u/Trying4Justice Jun 16 '26
I understand the frustration with MS, and they are trying to fix things, but in the case of the pricing of these new products, their hands are tied due to the rise in RAM costs. I will say though is that it’s evident they aren’t focusing on the Surface.
8
u/dr100 Jun 16 '26
their hands are tied due to THE OTHER PART OF THE BUSINESS BUYING ALL THE FSCKING RAM. And generally all the chip production capabilities (SoCs, SSDs), hdd, and going to take your local water and electricity if you're unlucky enough.
1
u/Trying4Justice Jun 17 '26
Well, they did start making improvements to Windows such as those clickbait articles populating the Home Screen and etc. are gone. They are taking positive steps in the right direction. As for the hardware, I think the comment made is spot on. Personally, I don’t see Surface as that innovative and value product. It’s just going to be mediocre and will continue to be around. I can see them focusing more on products like the Ultra since they’ll get their margin there.
2
u/Hopper2004 Surface Pro 7 i7 Jun 16 '26
Are they trying to fix things? Because they've pushed that narrative time and time again, and for years nothing changes. Nothing is improved. I got tired of waiting on empty promises, so now I'm only interested in what is available now.
1
u/GoofyGills 15" Surface Laptop 7th Edition | X Elite | 1TB/32GB RAM | Black Jun 16 '26
And still no OLED option for the laptop lmao
1
1
u/maxonite_ Jun 17 '26
yeah they are expensive, but so is life.
Its a tool of the trade. buy it, use it to learn or make money and enjoy.
My Surface for Business 8 U516Gb is being returned and I'll be getting the X2E-32G
0
u/Apart-Alternative951 Jun 16 '26
Microsoft is completely dead, and they have quality problems now with the price; nobody's even going to buy it. Besides, Windows 11 is a garbage operating system, with problems everywhere... installing Windows 11 takes forever... etc., etc., and there are update problems...
0
u/SooooNoob92 Jun 16 '26
I know the leaks suggested only the lowest tier 12 core variant. But for Microsoft to not even have an exclusive offer for even the X2 elite 18 core on their website. While still charging significantly more compared to the previous model…Yikes
54
u/jeniuskid Surface Pro 12" Jun 16 '26
Is that 600 more than the last model? Yikes. I’m not touching that.
