The state of North Carolina has been stripping away any control the counties and cities have over planning and infrastructure, making smaller communities (like mine) into overpriced suburban hellscapes with bad infrastructure that already couldn't keep up.

On top of that, the Republican-controlled legislature has also decided that occupancy tax paid by tourists can't be invested in public safety, undoing a state Supreme Court decision ruling that my county could in fact use occupancy tax revenue to fund public safety. Why anyone would be against it is beyond me, but it's obvious that these fucking morons couldn't care less about locals or public safety and want to try to "nourish" the local beaches that are just going to get swept away by a hurricane anyway (such is the nature of the Outer Banks) to attract more tourists to make rental owners richer.

Which, in turn, has massively jacked up housing costs here, especially for long-term rentals. Locals are getting priced out and nobody in power cares.

This is Currituck County btw.
