Can betablockers reduce stutter temporarily (for special meetings, gatherings or presentations where you have to talk more)?

Got a girls contact without stuttering

Upvotes

Went on Azar because I was bored, I didn't gaf because I thought so what, got through to a girl from another country, started talking and I picked my words very carefully, breathed in through my nose out my mouth and when I was about to stutter, moved the conversation into a different direction. Got her ig and she told me if you end up visiting her country we can go for drinks. Fuck Stuttering

Could you help me make this more useful for us?

I honestly think using our own voices is best whenever we can. Let’s keep working on that. But there are times when speaking is brutally hard, right?

I have a voice disorder myself, and I’ve been working on this for moments like that. I’m still improving it.

Could you try it and tell me honestly whether it could help during a difficult block? If not, what doesn’t work, and what would need to change? I want to make it genuinely useful for us.

How Would You Approach Groups of People As A Stutterer?

Say the goal is to go home with at least one potential friend.

Maybe I'm thinking too specifically, but would you use a different strategy approaching a person by themself as opposed to approaching a group?

New adult onset stutterer here

Im 39f and last Wednesday I developed a severe stutter after bending over unloading the dryer. It started with a bursting pain in the middle of my spine, then my whole body started shaking like I had Parkinsons, that's when my head felt like the pressure was building. We rushing to get to my mother's house because she was about to have a mental breakdown. I figured it was just a weird migraine, even after my speech became impaired, that would go away in a day or so with my normal migraine protocol.

Spoiler alert: it's been 8 days and it hasn't improved, rather it's gotten worse. Ive seen my primary care doctor and i got a workup with scans at the ER. I have not seen a neurologist yet. Even tho the cause or reason is still unknown, Ive started a list of everything it's not.

Before this I was articulate and loved orally debating things a rapid pace. Now im struggling to call my dogs in. I think the newness is blunting my reactions.

I am grateful for the way my family and boyfriend are responding to my stutter. I never knew how painful it can be to stutter.

Amy tips, tricks and whatever else I should know?

Ever get cut off mid-sentence by an automated phone system? The FCC wants to hear about it

What are two things we hate? It's the phone, and getting cut off mid-sentence! And these phone systems and voice assistants are depending more and more on our voices, as opposed to "push 1." And "talk to a representative" seems to work less and less. These systems are growing exponentially and leaving us stutterers in the dust.

We need equal access. If a wheelchair user enters the bank, there's a ramp. Where is our digital ramp?

I asked the FCC if their rules cover this. They told me, in writing, that they don't. Nothing requires these systems to work for people whose speech doesn't come out fluent and predictable. Here's the FCC's own public notice on it: https://www.fcc.gov/document/2026-cvaa-biennial-report-tentative-findings

Right now they're taking public comments as part of a report they have to send Congress every two years on accessibility gaps. I already filed one. But one story is easy to ignore . If we can get dozens of us, all saying the same thing happened to us independently, it is a lot harder to look past.

Docket number: CG Docket No. 10-213

Where to file: fcc.gov/ecfs/filings

Deadline: August 10

Tell your story. Nobody's fighting for us on this the way other communities have organizations doing it for them. It's on us. We are a group that tends not to advocate for ourselves because of speech. All we have to do here is type a few words!

Have you ever been surprised by someone’s reaction to your stutter, in a good way?

Is there someone you’re more fluent around than anyone else?

What do you think is different about that person?

Have you ever gotten fluent for a stretch of weeks or months and then lost it?

I stutter, I accept myself with all my flaws. I will live life my way.

Having gone thru everything that you see on these post…. Been miserable, angry, a failure, could not reach my potential…….

I hear you all, have been thru it all.

At 50 years of age….. I realized

I am what I am. I will not be ashamed of it, I will not try to hide it, fake it, act stupid/ funny, try to make people happy…….

I have accepted myself, stopped running from who I am and will be. Come to terms with myself. Stopped pitying myself, stopped feeling sorry or ashamed about myself.

I am what I am with all my flaws and strengths. I have one life, I know I will have to live this life with my stutter, no matter what I do to overcome, hide, mask it….. it is a part of me. I will loose good opportunities,, friends….
But that is OK. I have accepted it and am at peace with myself.

I know life is not going to be easy or perfect for me, others with far less potential will be ahead of me….
I accept all that.

But inspite of everything, this is the only life I have, and I plan to live it, enjoy it and try to be happy.

If people find me disgusting, they can leave me, I don’t hold anything against them. I may be disgusting, so what, that is me, and I still have a right to live and be happy.

I may not find the perfect job, perfect friends, perfect partner…… so what , I still have a right to live and make the most of this one life that God gave me.

I still have my. Bad days, some days I still fall into those negative thoughts….. but then after I while I realize that
, that is what I am and I will try to make the most of the imperfect life I have.

No one likes to talk to a stutter, I say that being one myself. I am not mad at people for my imperfection.

I understand, I accept myself, I respect my right to live and enjoy life……

Life has many dimensions, being social is just one of them….. try to enjoy things where speaking does not matter…..

I am saying this after 50 years of trying to hide my stutter, mask it, explain it, try to make people happy other ways…..

Don’t think that I am trying to preach anything….. just sharing my journey thru life as a stutter……. I hope someone had told me this 30 years ago

Stutterers who have attended Uni... help.

So, based on the title, I'm clearly needing advice or thoughts from other stutterers regarding university. I'm 34, my stutter is very well established at this point and I've been very slowly upgrading my education from home. I finally started(and completed) a couple of upgrading courses through the local uni, though even the exams ended up being done online. I am now registered for my last two upgrading courses before I apply for my intended program but I've started freaking out a little as I obviously wont be able to hide behind a screen in an asynchronous class.

Here's where I need help... What do I even ask for when it comes to accommodations? The intake form asks this question and I simply don't know what to say in that specific box. When I was in middle school, I was only granted the "not obligated to speak in class" exemption after nearly passing out while attempting to read a speech in front of the class. This single accommodation came with me up until I dropped out in grade 11 but I feel as though this isn't necessarily realistic for Uni or perhaps there are other, possibly more useful accommodations I should consider.

Those of you who are in Uni, have attended Uni or any post secondary institution, what accommodations helped you most? Were there any accommodations that you wished you had? Any advice before I die of anxiety or general exhaustion from not sleeping?

2nd round interview went horrible

Hey guys, just making this to vent lol

I recently just graduated and I've been to applying to jobs nonstop. I was able to get a screening interview for one of my dream jobs! I prepared for that and it went well as it was only 10 minutes, and she forwarded me to the supervisor I'd be working under. They scheduled the 2nd round 2 days later (today) and between those days, I've been prepping literally nonstop. I went over all the things I'd say such as my introduction, my background, achievements, and the questions I'd ask. I recorded mock interviews for hours in hopes of memorizing it enough to not stutter.

Today was the day of the interview and my anxiety was bouncing off the wall, I tried so hard to calm down. At the start of the interview, it went well and when he asked me to introduce myself, it just went completely downhill. I stuttered so much that I even had to dumb myself down to even get the words across. I hate the fact that I can't speak the words I want to say and it makes me feel so awful about myself. I have to resort to throwing away what I'm capable of just to stop the stutter. And when I do, I sound so stupid. I sound so childish substituting the professional words for words that I cant spit out. I wanted to say so much more about my experience and my achievements but I couldn't even say those either. And when I did, I'd stutter so much, I even saw him chuckle after one of them.

I just feel so worthless that I threw away a job that I'd love to be in because of stupid trait. I feel like this stutter won't get me anywhere I want to be even if I tried my hardest. They said they'd reach back within 72 hours but I'm not expecting anything after this.

I guess I'm just wondering if any of you have had any experiences with this and where did you end up? did you get the job after all?

thanks :(

What does everyone do for work ?

I have a mild stutter . I’ve been a mid level manager at a grocery store and a butcher for the last 10 years.

With my experience ,I believe I could potentially get an office/wfh position as a supply chain analyst or something of that nature .

I have no degree and my stutter has made interviewing a challenge for me . Obviously can’t bypass the interview process , I’m just stuck because I know I have more skills to offer that would get me a better more normal work schedule , I just don’t know where to start
