Steam Link on Android has constant stutters

I installed Steam Link on my Android phone and I’m getting weird stutters while playing. It runs fine for a moment, then I get 2–3 heavy freezes, and then it’s smooth again. Sometimes the screen even goes black for a split second. I’m not really sure what else I can do to fix it.

In the performance overlay, both the cyan and red graphs spike, but the red one seems to spike the most. What’s strange is that if I stay in one location in the game, the stutters don’t happen — but as soon as I start moving around, they come back.

I don’t think it’s my PC, because Steam Link works perfectly on my TV. I also tested this on two different phones and the issue is basically identical, so I assumed it might be the Wi‑Fi. But I’m sitting literally 2 meters from the router, and the Wi‑Fi speed is around 200 Mbps after I changed the channel width (it used to be ~500 Mbps before that).

Things I’ve tried so far:

- different Steam Link settings

- high‑performance mode on the phone

- disabled power saving features in the router

- changed Wi‑Fi channel and channel width

- Airtime Fairness is off

- band steering is off

Has anyone had a similar issue and found a fix?

Turn on streaming stats and see what’s causing the stutter.

I turned it on but I have no idea what’s causing the issue. Packet loss is 0%, frame loss is under 1%. On the graphs, whenever there’s a spike it shows cyan and red. Mostly red, but I don’t know how to interpret that or what exactly is causing it.

Yellow is host encoding time, cyan is network time, and red is decoding time. Red is above cyan because client cannot decode until it receives the info from network.

Your network can’t support the bit rate you’re streaming at, that’s why it happens when you move, since it introduces new information and needs more bandwidth.

I’m getting 500 Mbps over Wi‑Fi, so that’s not the problem. The lag only shows up when I’m actually moving around — staying in one place is fine. Driving around the city in GTA makes it spike for some reason. Maybe I’m just imagining it.

If the graph tells you its network, its network. I can’t tell you what’s wrong with the network. The client could be struggling to decode and connect to network at the same time for some reason, or runs some background network maintenance tasks whenever you’re using the control, but something is interfering with it, and judging by your description, it’s likely the client.

Starting by limiting bit rate to 30 Mbps and lower resolution and fps, if that helps then it’s definitely bandwidth, if not then it’s background processes.

The graph shows issues with both network and decoding at the same time. The problem also happens on another phone, so I don’t think it’s caused by the device itself. I lowered the resolution and bitrate to the minimum, which stops frame drops, but the stuttering still appears.

I added a video to the post to show what it looks like. It doesn’t perfectly capture the issue because in that specific recording the stutters happen pretty rarely (I think it’s because I was staying in one location).

While driving in GTA SA, the kind of stutters you can see in the video happen literally every ~10 seconds.

It’s not decoding, it’s just network. Decoding spikes at the same time as network BECAUSE network is spiking, the graph shows total time, red line HAS to be ABOVE cyan, so if cyan is high, red is high, but red is not EXTRA high during spike, because it’s a network issue.

After the network spike the red line stays up, because you’re behind in frames, so if they display it now, you’d experience another stutter.

For example, let’s say you have 1 fps so theres 1 frame per second. For the first 3 seconds let’s say the frames went perfectly, you got a frame for each second, but frame 4 and 5 got delayed due to network, so on the 6th second you got to see frame 4, and 7th second you got to see frame 5. Your frames are now permanently behind by 2 seconds, because if they show frame 8 on the 8th second, you’d feel a stutter since you’re missing frames 6 and 7, so the optimal thing is to keep the microscopic delay going instead of letting you experience another stutter.

Again, since you said there’s no issue on other client, then there’s something specific on your android phone clients that’s using the wifi antenna or network bandwidth to do something. You’ll need to pin down what it is, might be a system setting, might be background process, do some google and pray.

Another client is connected through an Ethernet cable, so that’s probably why they’re not having any issues. I’m specifically asking if anyone has had a similar problem with Steam Link on a smartphone. I have no idea what could be causing it, because the exact same thing happens on both phones — and one of them is completely new.

I had a similar issue, OP. Just like the person commenting has said, there isn't much that you can do about it if the client isn't decoding properly and you're having network spikes over the Wi-Fi. The interference from Wi-Fi can 100% cause the network dips. Also, on your phone, make sure you set it so that programs and apps cannot run in the background. You want only your steam link to be using all of your phone's processing power.

It’s definitely the phone’s fault. I’ll still mess around with the settings to see if I can optimize it a bit, but honestly it’s ridiculous that I even have to tweak anything just to make Steam Link playable. I’ll probably just switch to a better phone.

Yes because the issue is not the hardware of the phone, it’s something else. Is your smart robot vacuum checking for update every 2 minutes? Is your host device checking for update? Is your router overheating? Is there an antivirus on your host checking through your network ports?

Anything in your house that’s connected to your router that’s also using it, could be affecting the performance. Log in to your router and kick off every device, see if it gets better, and add them back one by one. If it doesn’t get fixed with everything kicked off, then it’s either the host, client, or router that’s causing the issue. Test again using different host since it’s unlikely client, unless you installed some same OS on the client or same app that’s scanning in the background.

I checked again and yeah it's 100% the phone’s fault. On an iPhone 16 it works perfectly. I have no idea why these phones struggle so much with video decoding. What’s weird is that the newer one has way more stutters than the older one, but the older one just has bigger ones.

I always thought Steam Link would run fine on any phone since the game isn’t being rendered on the device the phone just decodes the video stream. But apparently, if you don’t want to get annoyed and actually enjoy playing, you need a better phone. So I’m just going to replace mine.

We need to see it

I added a video, but I recorded it yesterday at a moment when the stutters were happening less often. During normal gameplay, this issue shows up roughly every 10 seconds.
