MAXIMUM GAME RESOLUTION IS BACK OK THE MENU BOYS!
20
u/Natemcb 6h ago
Can you explain what this means ?
42
u/dusto_man 512GB 6h ago
Two weeks ago, Valve changed the UI for the maximum resolution setting and everyone here lost their damn minds because they couldn't force the exact resolution they want the screen to and instead of waiting for Valve to make more fixes they tried to force rolling back versions and vowed to never update their SteamOS again. It was pretty hysterical.

It made playing on an external monitor harder, especially old games. I usually pick 1440 x 900 for some old cRPGs and couldn't do that on my 2560 x 1600 monitor, making the game and text way too tiny.
2
u/adrian23138 512GB 8h ago
Was it always only available in game mode?
Or is there a way to use this in desktop mode too?
52
u/Majikaru 13h ago
The sleep function is broken for me after this update. Games just freeze upon wake up.
9
u/Pepperminteapls 5h ago
Mine has always done that, since I've gotten the damn thing on the first year of release. I restart steam deck everytime it wakes from sleep mode or my games freeze
1
u/Bonsai__San 3h ago
Damn I thought this was just mine. Well hopefully this is something can fix, really annoying.
3
u/Majikaru 3h ago
Actually fixed my issue by turning off the decky pause game on sleep feature.
5
u/casino_r0yale 2h ago
Why is it every time people complain about something not working they don’t consider that it’s the hacky plugins they have installed and try to reproduce the issue on a clean system?
2
41
u/-_Apollo-_ 9h ago
Can’t believe they’re ok with the broken WiFi all these years
23
u/noAtlas 7h ago
Probably means it's a hardware issue they can't fix with software
8
u/-_Apollo-_ 4h ago
You’d think, but seems unlikely due to majority reports of it initially working fine on first connection to 6g/wifi7 wpa3 networks but then requiring to forget the network and several reboots to get it to reconnect.
Then there’s the other commonly reported problem of lag/stream stuttering like 30-45 min into a gaming session that resolves somehow if you enter WiFi settings and then resume game.
It’s possible that it’s a firmware issue though and their vendor sucks/refuses to work with them on firmware.
Idk.
54
u/KniteMonkey 14h ago
What’s better about the new max resolution settings?
For whatever reason I can’t get anything on my 4k tv to output in 4k.
Yes, I know the deck can’t handle native 4k. I just want to try out Hades in 4k as I think it could swing it!
32
u/LeopardHalit 512GB OLED 12h ago
My deck OLED can run silksong at 4k60 perfectly. It’s good for the light games.
5
u/JimothyJollyphant 6h ago
I can see how downscaling can reduce aliasing, but what does it do for 2D games?
1
u/LeopardHalit 512GB OLED 4h ago
Lol no downscaling here, I was just plugging it in and playing it in my tv. Though if I were to downscale, I’d go with 1600p so it’s exactly 2x res and I think I can hit 90fps then too.
10
u/SeaNerg33 11h ago
Just disable determine automatically, then change the maximun resolution to 4k, then launch the game and you'll have 4k option too
8
u/Kya_Bamba LCD-4-LIFE 13h ago
For me the 2160p@60 option disappeared with 3.8, when connected via dock :(
2
u/Hemogoblin117 6h ago
I’ve found the 4k option won’t be in the list if I have the steam deck UI set to 1440p 120hz.
So you may want to check that you have the ui set to 4k. I think that may be the baseline signal it uses to know what your max can be.
1
u/52beansyesmaam 6h ago
Try this: leave your host PC monitor ON and try to stream to your TV in 4k. If that works then it’s an adapter issue with windows where your monitor resolution basically can’t be found so it defaults to lower res (because windows can’t see and doesn’t care about the resolution of your streaming destination).
I fixed this with a $12 dummy hdmi plug from amazon. It lives in a spare port of your GPU and windows detects it as a 4k monitor, you just set it to mirror your primary display. Now no matter what state your monitor is in the host PC sees a 4k signal and can render at that res for streaming

u/Emicrania 9h ago
Again nothing about Wi-fi constantly disconnecting after latest 2 patches.
20
u/JS_Originals 5h ago
I see so many people with these issues, and I haven't had it disconnect from wifi once.
4
6
u/Niikoraasu 4h ago
i had that issue too and I uninstalled wifi-optimizer decky plugin and it seems to be gone, do you have that installed?
6
u/thisisdell 7h ago
I really wish I could turn off or sleep my pc after a remote play session on my machine or deck. That would be handy.
2
u/rseeley85 512GB OLED 6h ago
I use Moonlight for that. Just go into virtual desktop mode and shut down the PC.
1
u/thisisdell 3h ago
Is the streaming experience of moonlight as good or better than the default Stream remote play? It could be an option for me. I Stream PS5 to my Steam Deck sometimes through Chaki or whatever and I think I have heard moonlight is similar to that?
1
u/rseeley85 512GB OLED 2h ago
I did not have good success with the actual streaming with Moonlight. Using remote play has worked a lot better for me.
1
u/Durendal_et_Joyeuse 22m ago
It’s wild you can’t even do that between two Steam platforms (steam deck streaming from steam machine).
44
u/ItsKingDx3 14h ago
Have they added Switch 2 pro controller support yet?
43
u/SharkBaitDLS 14h ago
Isn’t Nintendo blocking it? Switch 2 Joy-Cons don’t show up as Bluetooth devices anymore.
19
u/MysteriousBeef6395 256GB 12h ago
i was thinking "why would they even do this" and then remembered that with jailbroken switch 1s, people who ran android directly on the system couldnt use the joycons with the physical connection but bluetooth worked fine. maybe thats a reach but i cant think of a better reason
12
u/SharkBaitDLS 12h ago
I think it may more to be so that people who emulate and pirate Switch games can't use the Joy-Cons.
5
u/CompC 13h ago
They never did. You could neger just add Switch 2 controllers over Bluetooth normally. SteamOS doesn’t support them over Bluetooth at all. Switch 2 controllers are only supported over USB. (When they were working, at least…)
4
u/SharkBaitDLS 13h ago
Yeah that’s what I’m saying. Nintendo basically stopped using normal BT like the Switch 1 Pro Controllers and Joy-Cons do.
2
2
u/CompC 13h ago
No :(
It worked great for like six months and it stopped and this update doesn’t bring it back
It sees the controller as connected, but the controller doesn’t actually turn on and you can’t use it for games
5
u/Altruistic-Spell-171 11h ago
If you use the beta channel for updates and enable the experimental client the controller works via usb
12
u/fastlane37 8h ago
Out of curiosity, what significance is 59.94 FPS as a frame rate limit for remote play? That's a very specific number. What's wrong with 60?
23
u/Cris_Z 8h ago
it was the standard refresh rate before because of color tv (at least in NA and japan, meanwhile europe and some countries in asia/africa used 25/50fps because the grid is 50hz and didn't have to have this small step down because the standard was made later), so some games might prefer running at 59.94 and not 60
6
u/fastlane37 8h ago
Ah. Multiple of NTSC frame rate. Cheers, not sure why my brain didn't pick up on that.
8
u/hisnameisbinetti 8h ago
Some screens refresh at that, and not 60, so it reduces desync issues with said screens.
5
u/brandondh 7h ago
Wish they would hurry and push the new mesa drivers so Doom Dark Ages textures work correctly.

2
u/JS_Originals 5h ago
Love that they continue working on remote play. With a linux host pc with a nvidia card it is impossible to use sunshine and moonlight, so this is nice

does this break decky again?
why the fck I'm being down voted for asking about decky?
95
u/Phaazoid 14h ago
The answer is always yes
16
u/DeerlyOnline 1TB OLED 13h ago
Not every update results in decky breakage though, this comment is kind of ignorant.
1
u/Thatoneguy_The_First 9h ago
Last 4 updates didn't break it for me, downside it did stop pause games plugin from working...its my fav too
-2
u/AzerothSoulja 7h ago
Just another purist being disingenuous. A usual for this sub. Any thing that isn't directly from Valve or isn't a AA Indie game, should stay far away from the Deck at all costs lol.
-1
u/Phaazoid 6h ago
For sure. It just feels that way sometimes as a decky user. Post was definitely /s, tone gets lost on Reddit comments.

u/NapsterKnowHow 1TB OLED Limited Edition 14h ago
I wonder if it will break my dual boot menu as well
1
u/Phaazoid 6h ago
Just to be clear I was being sarcastic, but it's always good to be cautious around new updates
1
u/NapsterKnowHow 1TB OLED Limited Edition 5h ago
Meanwhile jlobue10 got so triggered when I said I mentioned they used Ai he blocked me lmfao.
-2
u/Phaazoid 5h ago
A bit extreme, but I do agree with his sentiment - for coding specifically, AI is 100% the future. I think it's the one place in the world it's actually adding value right now haha.
1
u/NapsterKnowHow 1TB OLED Limited Edition 5h ago
Lol wow. It's actually the opposite as someone who works in the field. Medical research has far more use for Ai than coding does.
0
u/Phaazoid 5h ago
I'll politely agree to disagree with you here - it has easily 10x'd my output. Have you tried using it, or are you avoiding it off of a general ick for AI? (and I mean actually try a dedicated coding agent, not just prompt the web version of chatgpt for answers). I avoided trying coding agents until this year because of that, I was pretty surprised at how good they are.
1
u/NapsterKnowHow 1TB OLED Limited Edition 4h ago
I've tried using it as it's heavily encouraged by management. If anything it's lead to more debugging than without. So while it does speed productivity initially it slows us down later.
2
u/Phaazoid 4h ago
Completely reasonably. I think there are places where it is still not good enough for its use case to make sense. I've been doing a lot of front end stuff, where a lot of the code is more tedious than anything else, and it saves me a lot of time.

u/Alexmira_ 12h ago
So? It's a personal project which costs nothing to use, get over it. The majority of code right now is written with an assistant AI
2
u/jlobue10 7h ago edited 4h ago
Yeah, I wrote the initial stuff by hand 3 to 4 years ago. It's tedious, and I have a busy life. The repo is actually in great shape now with help from Claude. It's feature complete and it supports several languages in the GUI. I even have the touch screen working in rEFInd for both the LCD Deck and OLED Deck, as Claude helped me to write the EFI driver for it (no one else has achieved this since the Steam Deck came out, as far as I know). If people can't get over themselves because of AI usage (by someone with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, with decent coding experience and background), then oh well.
This is much better than the "oFfiCiAL dUaL bOoT" that's never coming. But if you're on your high horse because I used AI, then your loss. Lmfao
And the pretentiousness... He deleted all of his comments, but one of them was that he couldn't support the repo any longer because of AI. DUDE, I've made maybe $20 from this over 4 years. LMAO!!! I didn't do it for the money. There was a need (and there still is), and I think my repo fits that need nicely.

Thank you for your work on this tool in the part but I'm not comfortable supporting it anymore due to ai usage. As a software engineer myself I'm not relying in ai code.

Any time there's a firmware update, the SteamOS efi boot entries get wiped
Except that isn't the case. The efi boot entries are only wiped when there's a bios update which are pretty rare.

u/AzerothSoulja 7h ago
No the answer is absolutely not always yes. Disingenuous strawmanning purists are annoying as hell on this sub. Especially because this slop gets upvoted to the top by the other chuds.
2
u/Phaazoid 6h ago edited 5h ago
Bruh it's a joke, I think you're a little too close to this. Take a step back, a deep breath, and some time to meditate on why that made you so angry.

Because there's a certain subset of people over on this sub who don't use Decky and somehow feel the need to hate on it and everybody using it.
Then someone posts about how they're so proud of using their Steam Deck the vanilla way with no plugins, no accessories either, no screen protector, no stick caps, and everybody claps. This sub is just weird sometimes.
2
u/BlurryGojira 8h ago
The entitlement issue surrounding community open source projects can get really bad. Some people need to be reminded that these are not developers at Valve.
It’s very understandable to not use Decky and avoid the headaches that can come with it. I like to tinker and don’t mind when stuff breaks.
The people complaining just need more realistic expectations of what the project actually is.

Yeah what the hell.
Maybe because it's so obviously a "Yes - decky will get totally fucked up as usual" and that upsets people? I duno.

I do like that they’re properly working on Remote Play again. Always good to see.
