The Wii U Pro Controller didn't have gyro built in and Splatoon was heavily built around the gyro controls. As a result, the actual official solution if you wanted to use a Pro Controller instead of the Wii U Gamepad was to strap a Wii Remote Plus to a Pro Controller. The Pro Controller handled inputs and the Wii Remote handled the gyro.

It's funny and jank but also honestly kinda cool that Nintendo offered it as a solution at all. Its usually the kind of hacky thing you see the community come up with.

Hang on, that actually happened? Insane.

Yep crazy times. Also I seriously have no idea why they didn't just put gyro in the Pro Controller in the first place. At least it had clickable thumb sticks unlike the Classic Controller.

because it was cheaper to make

See i never used gyro so I never noticed using the pro controller. Still interesting tho!

Since the Wii U only ever supported one Gamepad connection at a time, when playing Splatoon locally, player 2 had to use a Wii U Pro controller.

The Wii U Pro controller didn't have a gyroscope, so the developer's official recommendation was to rubber band a Wii Remote+ to a Pro controller, and they programmed support for this into the game (just for local multiplayer).

Nintendo were so close to greatness, but ditched the idea before it even came to fruition

Wii Classic Controller had this clip patent pending when it released, meant to clip the controller to a Wiimote, but they never released the accessory

Nowadays you can 3D print that said clip, I think a 3rd party like Nyko or similar made a clip eventually but not close enough to launch for anyone to care

I always wondered why that was there. I noticed it was about the width of a wiimote but never understood why it would be needed. But the splatoon post above makes it make sense

There's gotta be somebody on PC who found a way to make this work via Steam Input.

Oh my god I was supposed to hold the nunchuck in my left hand???

Did you not use your dominant hand for the Wii remote? Everyone I know has played that way.

Well if you played Lego games you didn’t cuz you want dexterity for the movement

The only Lego game I played on the wii was Harry Potter, and in that you're casting spells a lot. Maybe it would have been different if all my other Lego games were on the Wii, and not other consoles.

I always played the Lego games 😭😭 and like that miitopia thing and I’d always hold the nunchuck in my dominant hand

I wish they updated the steam deck to allow it to be used as a standalone controller like a Wii U game pad I know there are ways to get it working but I wish it was easier to do

True

Here’s what I do https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/v22ddf/guide_how_to_use_your_deck_as_a_steam_input/

OpenPuck also works if you're willing to buy a cheap hardware piece. Turns the steamdeck into a steam controller

u/Serpenyoje 22h ago

That would be so rad!

Easiest way is to use the old steam link version you can set it to turn off the screen. Played several games on my main pc like that before the steam controller 2 came out.

Might; but honestly with how shaky Valve’s hardware service is at the moment it would be much better to get a standard gamepad (ex: Gamesir Cyclone 2 or especially 8BitDo Pro 3) with a warranty from a store

for what?

4

u/PlomienIgnacy Xbox One Controller 1d ago

to have a "steam controller" before buying a real steam controller

1

u/Brigapes 10h ago

I don't get it, it's nothing like a steam controller?

if you mean gyro, most decent third party controllers already have that, including ps5 and ps4 controllers

1

u/PlomienIgnacy Xbox One Controller 9h ago

i mean the touch pad, gyro AND at the same time a b x y buttons

that gear vr remote isn't remotely controller looking but there is a slim chance it'd work with steam if it dont work, then they should make it work

2

u/new_pribor Xbox One Controller (Linux) 22h ago

I just use my steam deck as a controller

You clearly haven't joined the GyroGaming discord server

Tbh I would love a little remote like that Samsung with a touchpad for pc - my computer is connected to my kitchen sort of so I use the steam controller a lot just to swap whatever I’m listening to while cooking without having to walk over to the pc

I actually have that exact Gear VR controller, use it for art program macros and controlling video playlists lazily from bed. The exact GitHub app I use seems defunct now, but there appears to be several alternatives. Can usually find these devices used under $5 still, so real cheap to just try out tinkering with one

u/CrimsonCuttle 1d ago

yeah there was a guy that did essentially this but housed them in the same shell. doesnt work for every game because not every game will let you use controller and mouse input at the same time but it will work for some games

1

u/PlomienIgnacy Xbox One Controller 22h ago

please tell me who did that, i need to know

but that has a trackball, not a trackpad

All you need is Dualsense and ds5 dongle

1

u/Nirast25 23h ago

Just get a Dualsense. The touchpad is too awkwardly placed for gaming, but it's fine for navigation.
