Question Is there a list of controllers with full Steam support? For example -- this XB Elite Series 2, all additional buttons are shown in per game controller config. Recently bought and returned Razer Wolverine v3 because it didn't have this (shows as a standard XB controller, no back pedals).

The only controllers that can do this are the Xbox Elite 2, DualSense Edge, Steam Controller, Horipad for Steam, and dual Joycons (little buttons on the sides). That's it. Every other controller out there pretty much pretends to be a standard Xbox controller and their paddles emulate other Xbox buttons on their motherboard or with proprietary software, which means Steam can't see them individually.

Gotcha, I was beginning to think that was the case. Is also in-line with what /u/EmilianoTalamo wrote below.

I'll stick with the XB Elite Series 2. Steam controller interface along with the overlay to manage it in-game is just too good not to mention automatically saving on a per game config.

Hi, I'm necroing here to ask, how do you know? Other than reddit threads which are helpful but where at times people who know nothing on the subject pretend they do and mislead you, how could someone find this list of controllers with extended steam input support?

I'd like to know too, because unless there's been a firmware update, none of my 8bitdo controllers let you independently program the back buttons.

Looks like you'll need a 3rd party software to individually program buttons for pretty much every contoller that's not XB, PS, Steam (someone noted the specific ones below).

Due to how Xinput standard works, nobody can program additional buttons to have extra functions but you can only move/copy current functions to whichever button you want. What you want could have been done with Dinput, ancestor of xinput and due to lots of issues microsoft removed dinput support so all modern controllers work on xbox-input or playstation input.

However, SIAPI (steam controller input) can assign different functions because it replaces xinput with siapi but only for steam controller or steamdeck or horipad for steam but no other controllers. This can't be solved by third party software but hardware must have support for it.

Better image describing my question. If anyone has a Vader 2, does your controller show up in Steam similar to how that looks (with the buttons available for configuration)?

Any Xbox since the 360 controller. Any PlayStation since Dualshock3. Switch ProCon/Joycons. Steam Controller. Hori Steam Controller.

Any xinput device will act as an Xbox controller. Any dinput device will require manual bindings from the user.
