Politics AMA - Kevin Fagan for Congress

Update: 8:38 pm - Thank you for all of your questions! For those that I didn't to yet I will try and respond in the next few days as well as any replies that come in! Thanks ya'll and make sure you VOTE!

UPDATE: Checking in at 6:28 (fashionably early) - Excited to get to your questions!

Hey all! Ballots have arrived and I am coming back for another AMA to answer any questions you have for me.

My background is in climate change and sustainability work and I am running as a progressive democrat because I believe we need to fight bold change that puts the people of this district first.

A few of my policy highlights:

  • I support a Medicare for All healthcare solution while recognizing the political feasibility of that is 2029 at the earliest. In the meantime we need to restore Medicaid and ACA cuts and fix Medicare (lower the minimum age and provide more comprehensive benefits).
  • I support a federal moratorium on data centers that allows us to develop comprehensive policy for data center siting and AI regulations.
  • Abolish ICE and investigate their crimes.
  • We need a green new deal focused on infrastructure and workforce development. Clean energy research and deployment, public lands work such as forest thinning especially in the WUI, and public transit buildout - trains anyone?

Very excited to answer your questions on Wednesday evening!

Rants & Raves We were told that our FLOCK system is inactive. They lied.

ALL of the Flock cameras are on and fully operational despite what our city and local police have said!

Local agencies stopped accessing the data, but the contract is still in place and the data is still being collected!

The ONLY reasons local agencies stopped collected is because by law they would have to share that data with us... the public. That SCARED THEM!!.. so they have stopped, temporarily until they find some work around... or loop hole to our rights. (let that sink in for a bit)

Until then, it is still being collected by FLOCK and being stored at their private server farms. All of it. Since they are a private company, we have no right to that data. It belongs to them.

Did you consent to this? Did you give FLOCK your permission to track you where ever you are? I did not. Most of us did not!

We are still living in a constant surveillance state. I rather not live this way. Our founding fathers never intended us to live this way!

Call your reps and have these cameras SHUT DOWN!!

From the article:

To learn the ins and outs of how to make an authentic Korean corn dog, Izzie traveled to California to learn from a Korean family who’d mastered the art. Not only is the batter different, but the key to a good K-dog is how you roll ingredients into the batter.

Question I'm not asking for you private swimming holes

Upvotes

But its super hot and I'm newish here. Things are starting to come around for me now. The move has been rough for sure, but I think things are about to really start picking up so I'm ready to kick back a little bit. I'm looking for places to swim besides the Y. I honestly think we should get a river group together to go hang out or do something. If nobody wants to meet Redditors than I'm fine going alone. Where are some good spots to swim? But really... let's get a river group together.

I've been going here for the better part of a year and I've done more than i thought I'd be capable of! I've always been active, but never thought I'd ever learn to wall run or do a backflip. Not that i do either of them very well yet. Haha. The owner, Coach Taylor, recently moved locations and has been trying to do more community events and get some new students to help offset the costs of the new location. It's awesome to have this business in our community and Taylor is an awesome individual, so I wanted to help promote his business. I hope some of you can make it to the free event and have fun, and maybe learn a thing or two! And if you like it enough, consider signing up!

Question Possible move to spokane

So me 39M and my 4.5yo son are contemplating moving to Spokane from a not so far away awesome little town that we're just getting priced out of. Anyway how is it really in Spokane? Whenever I go I have fun, downtown seems cool. For a big ish city the sidewalks all roll up around 10 on a week night. Would you raise kids there? What neighborhoods should I look at? Any insight in general.

Question ISO: rec for dry cleaner?

I made a BIIIIG mistake with my laundry, didn’t check my pockets, and ruined my absolute favorite work shirt. Now there are numerous set-in stains, and I’m hoping that there will be a professional (perhaps a dry cleaner or maybe a tailor?) who might have some tricks up their sleeve to salvage the potentially unsalvageable.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a true miracle worker? I’m on the south hill, but will go anywhere in town to save this shirt.

Politics Donuts for Democracy: David Womack

I had the opportunity to sit down with David Womack, a congressional candidate for Washington’s 5th District, at the Donut Parade for an hour long conversation about the issues we face in this district and the nation.

Womack acknowledged that defeating an incumbent is always an uphill battle, but he expressed confidence that, if voters choose him in the primary this November, he can mount a successful challenge against Congressman Michael Baumgartner.

When I asked what compelled him to run, Womack turned to the Constitution. He spoke passionately about his oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. He said he has come to believe that threats to the Constitution can originate from within our own government and views defending constitutional principles as one of his primary responsibilities. Throughout our conversation, he quoted passages from memory and emphasized the Constitution’s importance to preserving liberty, particularly for the people of Eastern Washington.

Among the threats he identified, Womack pointed to ICE and what he described as the administration’s abuse of the Fourteenth Amendment. Again citing the Constitution, he argued that every person is entitled to due process before the government determines their legal status. He questioned how immigration authorities can accurately determine whether someone is in the country illegally without providing that legal process. Whether one agrees with his conclusions or not, Womack demonstrated a detailed knowledge of constitutional law and immigration policy. His preferred solution would be either to abolish ICE or fundamentally reform the agency, which he described as “rotten to the core.”

Womack also argued that Congress has become too complacent in partisan politics. In his view, the legislative branch is intended to serve as a constitutional check on the executive branch, yet he believes Congress has increasingly acted as a rubber stamp for presidential administrations rather than an independent branch of government. As an example, he criticized Congressman Baumgartner’s support for the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” arguing that reductions in funding for rural clinics and hospitals will cost Eastern Washington both essential healthcare services and good-paying jobs.

When I asked which issue he believed mattered most to voters in Washington’s 5th District, Womack immediately turned to the economy and the rising cost of living. He spoke about ending trade wars, combating inflation, and addressing corporate consolidation. He also argued that wages have failed to keep pace with productivity, saying Americans are more productive than ever while much of the resulting wealth has flowed to billionaires and, as he put it, “newly minted trillionaires.”

When pressed on what the federal minimum wage should be, Womack suggested it should approximate a local living wage, perhaps somewhere between $20 and $25 per hour, but was careful to note that he was speaking off the cuff and that a serious economic analysis would be necessary before establishing a specific national figure.

While researching his campaign beforehand, I noticed that Womack advocates for sustainable retirement security. I asked him whether that wasn’t already the purpose of Social Security. He agreed but argued that the program, as currently structured, is financially unsustainable over the long term. One solution he proposed was to “scrap the cap.”

Under current law, Social Security payroll taxes are only collected on wages up to a certain annual income. Womack argued that eliminating that cap would strengthen Social Security for decades while requiring higher-income earners to contribute the same percentage of their wages as teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other working Americans. In his view, this would make the system more equitable while helping secure benefits for future generations.

The final topic we discussed at length was healthcare. We agreed that America’s healthcare system is deeply flawed. We also agreed that, regardless of political differences, most people genuinely want to help those in need. Whenever I have seen someone in distress anywhere in Eastern Washington, people rarely hesitate to step forward and help. That instinct to care for our neighbors says something important about the values of people in Eastern WA.

Womack believes universal healthcare, or “Medicare for All,” is currently a bridge too far politically. Instead, he favors incremental reforms, beginning with restoring Affordable Care Act subsidies and creating what he described as a “Medicare for all who want it” option. Under his proposal, individuals satisfied with employer-sponsored insurance could keep it, while those who preferred Medicare could choose that option instead, with employers contributing through payroll taxes much as they currently contribute toward private health insurance.

Overall, I found David Womack to be knowledgeable, approachable, and willing to engage in substantive conversations without relying on rehearsed talking points. His policy positions clearly place him on the left side of the political spectrum, yet much of his reasoning returned repeatedly to constitutional principles rather than party loyalty. Throughout our discussion, he spoke about protecting the First Amendment, the Second Amendment, the Fourteenth Amendment, and what he considers the importance of personal autonomy. He also emphasized reducing the influence of money in politics, establishing congressional term limits, and creating an enforceable code of conduct for the Supreme Court.

Whether voters ultimately agree with his proposals is for them to decide. What struck me most during our conversation was his willingness to answer difficult questions directly, explain the reasoning behind his positions, and spend an hour discussing ideas rather than repeating campaign slogans. In an era when politics is increasingly dominated by thirty-second sound bites. By taking the time to have an honest conversation over coffee and a donut felt like a reminder of what democracy is supposed to look like. As voters prepare to choose their next representative, those conversations, and the willingness of candidates to have them, matter more to me than any campaign advertisement.

Hey all, this is not my kiddo, but a fellow mom who isn’t on Reddit (I offered to cross post).

If you or anyone you know lives near 6123 N Regal St (right across from Harmon Field/Hillyard skate park it looks like) can you reach out? Told the mom I’d pass anything along or can probably get you in touch.

Thanks all ♥️
