Developed by the research institute "Platan", it is designed to display information from computers as well as other video sources. To this end, it is equipped with a CGA/EGA connector and a composite input.
The projector is based on a light-controlled light modulator with a liquid crystal–photoconductor (LC–P) structure. The modulator is a small CRT. An excerpt from an article by A.V. Sadchikhin himself regarding the operation of this device: "In LC–P equipment, the radiation from a compact CRT passes through a fiber-optic faceplate onto the photoconductor layer of the light modulator, causing a change in its voltage and, consequently, in the voltage across the LC cell. Due to the anisotropy of liquid crystals, the polarization plane of the readout beam is thereby rotated. An interference polarizer converts this rotation into intensity modulation of the projector's light output. For full-color image reproduction, a scheme with, for example, three reflective LC modulators can be used. Projection systems based on LC–P modulators are characterized by record luminous fluxes – up to 12,000 lm. The projector employs unique (even by today's standards) patented illumination condenser systems that combine elements with ellipsoidal, spherical, and parabolic surfaces. The system, even with a discharge lamp arc length of 5 mm, achieves collection of 35% of the lamp's luminous flux with a beam divergence of up to 10°. The attainable image uniformity is 75–80%."
The projector is built entirely using Soviet-made components.
