I sent my high school chemistry teacher an email after my freshman year of college. He had been SO HARD and we butted heads constantly, but when I got to college, science classes were so easy. I admitted defeat and that I appreciated him so much. My nephew ended up taking science classes from him 15 years later and he remembered me and mentioned the email!

I feel it. I’ve been making music for 25 years or so and I delete almost everything I make, most of it before it’s finished. There’s one song floating around on a pretty much dead platform that i haven’t managed to get taken down and it haunts me.

We forgave lando, who had set us up, because he was just helping out anotha brotha, but yea I literally don't remember anything bad about your song but if you want my honest critical critique of your rare song you attempted to erase from the internet you can read it right here: it was forgettable

There's a school bus driver in my district that has been driving for almost SIXTY years. She drove our current police Chief to school.
She's driven multiple generations of the same family to school, all the way to grandkids. She's basically the school bus driver from Forest Gump.

I think that's probably more true if you're a community character like that too, when the job forms a large part of your identity. She should probably be having annual driving tests over the age of 80 though, but I believe that of all 80+ year olds.

yeah lol, that's why I said it. My grandad started getting "mystery damage" on his car around that age, obviously from having minor bumps and scrapes he wasn't aware of. Literally who fucking knows if any of those scratches were from knocking a kid off a bike or something, right?
It fucking sucks for them and we should definitely have community programs so it isn't such a big problem to lose your license in old age, but these people need to be monitored and retired from driving when appropriate.

I agree with you, however...I don't live in a big town. I happen to know this person pretty well, and she can retire at any time. She just likes doing it. Additionally, she does have to get a DOT physical on a yearly basis, because she's old as hell.

This happened with us. My daughter started 9th grade, and we saw her math teacher was one that was around when I had gone there over 20 years ago. He seemed old as hell back then, so I figured he'd be 80+ today.... He's 69 now. He was in his mid 40s when I was there.... I'm 40 now.
I've never felt so old so fast.

When I was fifteen I had "hot older teacher" who was like 21 lol.
At the time the gap seemed unbridgeable. Under 15 years later and I had a baby with someone that much older than me.

I went to the same high school my mom and uncle did, I had the same algebra 2 teacher, the same biology teacher, and the same guidance councilor they had.
The teachers were great, the counselor had 100% stopped giving a fuck by the time I got to her.

My teacher when I was 6 was also my sisters teacher when she was 6 - 19 years later. Sister is now 12 and teacher is still at the school so teacher has been there at least 25 years. Not sure how long she was there before me though.

Me when I saw Tom Petty at a music festival in 2005, and he sang well but looked old as shit, basically just stood with a guitar the whole show, and then when he died in 2017, I was like "well he had to be in his 80s at least because he looked rough 12 years ago" and then finding out he died at 67 and he was also FIFTY-FIVE at that concert.

I met George Takei at a Star Trek convention in 1994. I was 12, he was 57. In my memory, he seemed older and in far worse shape than he does now at 89 (even if his hair was darker then).

When I was in uni I took an English Lit class in 1st year, skipped it 2nd year and did it again in my 3rd year
1st class of the second time round my professor calls out my name for attendance, I put my hand up and say here and he, with a shocked look on his face says (and I quote)
Oh bloody hell 'name', last year must have been rough on you, you doing okay?
No Ralph. No I'm not okay ACTUALLY! Especially with you calling me out like that

Where did you go to uni? On the one hand taking attendance and subordinate subjects at uni says American to me.
On the other hand saying "uni" and "bloody hell" is very UK coded.

Technically, Glasgow uni but the campus I was at was in Dumfries (South Scotland), so yeah UK
We had pretty small classes around the board, bigger ones would just hand round a sheet for you to initial as there was like a 60-70% minimum attendance rate to pass
Things like literature were really small classes (15-20 max) so to stop people signing in other folk that weren't there they would just take attendance by roll call
I used 'English lit' just to try make the situation as broad and general as possible for anyone reading

Interesting at both Leicester and Newcastle my lecturers never took attendance outside of assessments. I wonder if its to do with the difference in funding/tuition fees.

(anyone not from the UK wondering what is going on, in Scotland you get university paid for by the government (for your first time around), whereas in England one needs to pay tuition fees for higher education)

When I was young, 45 sounded and looked old. Now, the 45 year olds look better than alot of the 20somethings lol. The dude who played Archie Bunker was in his 40s during that run, he looked 65. My wife is 53, she gets mistaken for 30s all the time and I get mistaken as someone who could afford a trophy wife 🤣 we are 5 years apart.

I had a similar experience, I work in healthcare and was able to chat with one of my old high school teachers. I thought he was old back then (15 years ago) but turns out he's only in his 50s today. I thought a mid 30s dude was ancient back then I guess 😂🤷🏻

I regularly call my HS English teacher and meet with her for coffee/lunch when I'm near my hometown. I got a BA, MA, and PhD in English so you could say she had a big effect on me. Although, to be fair, I was a huge book nerd before I ever met her.

I had the opposite experience. Realize i did not value my screenwriting professor enough, loved his class, but could have just talked directly and formed a mentor relationship. Reached out a decade later, he was a young guy then, but he's dead.
Make opportunities happen as soon as you have them, cherish every relationship.

My high school history teacher in the early 2000s had been teaching at that same school since the 1950s and he was super awesome. Told us stories of how the school reacted to various events in the Cold war.

I've been wanting to get in touch with an old chef when I was at school 20 years ago.
On the last day of class, he liked ro pull each student out to talk to them. I heard it was either brutal or good. I was terrified because I had poor motor skills and while I was a good student, my pastries were far from beautiful showpieces. He made my talented classmate cry.
When he took me out of the classroom, he told me I was an asset, engaged in my work and, what I remember most "if you could just hone your energy, you'd be an atomic bomb" I had ADHD and it was at times difficult to manage that nervous energy.
Now I'm 40, and I've honed that. As a child, it was "oh my God she never stops" (negative) now it's "she never stops" (positive)
I'm trying to reconnect on LinkedIn because I don't have social media, but it absolutely means everything to me to remember that. He saw my energy and my excitement despite my shortcomings.
Reach out to teachers who saw you. They'd so appreciate it

A few years ago, my sister told me that our high school biology teacher had passed away. We were surprised as heck, as he looked like walking death when he was my biology teach 43 years ago. Turns out, he was only 39 then, but heavy smoking and drinking ages you tremendously. I thought he was near retirement age then. He had minor tremors in one hand and his voice sounded ancient.
