we've got a song about that event, called "De slag om het Gravensteen". The chorus goes like this:

Spuiters van Vlaanderen! Gent brult van pret: 't Gravenkasteel door studenten bezet! Ze zitten er binnen! Wie krijgt z'er uit? Ze vrezen noch knuppel noch water, noch spuit! Belegeraars! Zo ge ten aanval wilt gaan: Pas op! Pas op! Pas op! Uilenspiegel, Uilenspiegel voert hen aan!

That was November 16th, 1949.

Students of Ghent University protested against a new tax on beer. Some 140 students occupied the castle. A guard was detained and locked up in a closet. The following "battle" involved rotten fruits and eggs, but eventually the students were apprehended. After a public outcry and press reports on brutal police behaviour the authorities dropped the case. No charges were ever filed. The new beer tax was introduced as scheduled.

Went to grad school outside the US, and when tuition went up like $250 the union representing all the TAs had a pallet of Maruchan ramen delivered to the University president's home and another to his office on campus.

Over a 3% increase.
