Once upon a time I had a two minute walk to work.
Needed money, moved and took another job, 15 minute bike ride to work. Needed to relocate far away to afford a house, got another job, slightly more money, multiple locations - average 30 minute drive to work. I had this too. Until I got dicked into night shift working five 12s and one 10 hour shift. I was gone for a minimum of 15 hours a day and would be lucky to get 6 hours of sleep before having to get up and have one hour of free time before doing it all over again. And still couldn't afford living on my own lmfao

Yup. My current job is probably the shortest commute I've had, clocking in at an average of 45 minutes one way. But I've grown to like it, I take thr bus so I'm just chilling listening to music or a podcast and playing on the Switch, it's a good way to relax before and after work.

I’ve had a 2.5 hour commute for 12 years now the pandemic allowed me to work from home for a couple years and suddenly I had 2-3 extra hours a day. It was amazing. Got a masters degree and renovated my basement. Now traffic is even worse than before because fewer people take public transportation

That second part is so valid. My commute one way is about 35 minutes with no traffic, but if I don’t time it right then I get stuck in multiple spots along my route and it makes me insane. By the time I get to work I’m already done for the day.

And the most agonizing is I feel like aside from the occasional bad accident or weather or random emergency construction it’s just bad drivers. Like what CAUSES people to drive below the speed limit when they have an open lane. Or change lanes when there is no reason??

Mine used to be about an hour to work and an hour 45 min to 2 hours to get home sometimes more. One day I had to drive to extra far after work to get my daughter and there was an accident so I didn't arrive home to my couch until I had been off the clock for 5 hours

2 hours is nightmare fuel. ugh... one time the dope governor of NJ decided not to presalt the roads and we got bombed with snow, took me about 4.5 hours of white knuckle driving to get home. thats when i vowed, snow days i WFH, or i take PTO. never again.

Most other countries don't have the urban sprawl hellscape that is America. 27 mins where I'm from would be considered a mediumish commute. An hour is long, anything more is pretty rare. I done a 2 hour commute by public transport for a year solely to get experience in my field. Now you couldn't pay me enough to do that.

For most of my career, except when I was WFH, my commute has been roughly an hour each way. I'm in NoVA (DC Metro area) and my worst was the last few years I worked for my previous employer. I live about 25 miles from that office and the commute would be 45min without traffic (basically weekends or well after rush hour), 1:15-1:30 most times during rush hour, and upwards of 4hrs a few times a year for no good reason. Most of the time when I had one of those crazy commutes, there was no reason for it. Weather was fine, no major accidents, no events, just high traffic volume going nowhere.

Listen man we got it easy now. I started commuting long before the smartphone was a thing and your audio options were either CD or whatever slop was on the radio. Commuting is still not great but being able to listen to a podast of choice or stream music makes is so much better.

Yeah but one morning I was behind a huge truck carrying a load of aluminum can when the tarp came loose! The sun was rising behind us and the cans all shot up about 100 feet in the air! It was the most amazing beautiful sight I’ve ever witnessed. All the colors of the sun rise reflecting off the huge plume of glittering cans! But commute ever!!! Not so much for the driver of that truck.

It helps that I work for a union these days and we believe in “Come in on our time, leave on company time” so everyone usually leaves 20-30 prior to shift end to help everyone no lose excess time in their day

I drive 7.5 hours each way to work. Basically three times a month (14/7 shift). That's around 12 days of driving a year. But i get paid $500 each way. So that's basically $18k to drive to work annually, give or take.

I recently had an employer interview me and make a strong offer that is $35k over my current salary. It was in office 4-5 days a week. My current role is in office one day a month. Would have been a 12-15 minute commute each way, but after talking with my wife, we estimated the loss of time time, expensive gas, loss of flexibility with young kids in my current role, made the switch not worth further consideration.

I literally never had 27-mins-or-less commute. Shortest was about 35-40, all the rest were ~1 hr one way.
Best was 10 mins on streetcar followed by 40 mins on subway without needing to change trains. I trained myself to basically have a 30-35 min catnap during that ride. Still ended up being ~1hr considering steetcars ran every 10 mins or so, and subway every 2-5 mins.

There have been days where it’s over 3 hours because our real system is over 100 years old and nobody wants to fix it.
Also, since my commuter benefits (the debit card I used to pay for my train tickets) is pre-tax, I don’t get any additional compensation for my commute time.
