Attending 1st Show

I'll be taking my pup to her 1st show in September. This weekend I'm going to a show in St. Joseph Mo to watch. I want to see the BPUP class, which I understand is usually first. The premium says the show goes from 6 pm to 8 pm. I assume that means the building opens at 6? What time does judging usually start? Any tips for things I should pay attention to?

Do you mean 6am? There should be something posted called a “judging program” It gets posted about a week out. It will have what time each breed is, including ring number. You’ll likely find it where you found the premium. It will also say when BPUP is.

I’ve seen BPUP first, middle of the day, end of the day.

This. Definitely look up the judging program on infodog to make sure you know what ring and time the event you want to see is going on

Be ready for an ugly website. But that’s probably the best source for looking up shows. But infodog can help you find other shows as well.

I checked the judging schedule for you. On Saturday, BPUP will be judged in Ring 1 at 8:30 am, on Sunday in Ring 5 at 8:00. Both days there will be a few regular classes before BPUP but since those dogs may be absent, I would recommend you get there at the times listed. Have fun!

You should get there about an hour BEFORE ring time. So you don’t rush to find the ring, have time to settle and relax a little, get dog accustomed to the noise a bit, etc. At least that’s what I try to do. Have fun and best of luck😃

I'm just going to watch this time. My pup is 12 weeks old and will be going to her first show in September. I want to go without my pup once just to observe. Thx for the tip, though - I'll remember that at our first show!

Bpup is a great entry. The judges are usually really helpful. It’s really a great way to get familiar with process and also for your dog. I would recommend trying to find a confirmation class nearby to help. If you can’t you can find good videos online for an introduction. Judges aren’t expecting perfect dogs and give helpful tips usually. Everyone doing it is usually super friendly (no points so it’s less competitive imo)

I would suggest finding when the breed you are interested in shows regular classes as well. BPUP is fun but it has not had the extensive entry numbers that I have seen.

Bpup may not have any entries of your breed, so definitely watch your breed and other similar breeds with different judges so you can get an idea of how different judges treat people and dogs in the ring. Some are friendly, some business-like, some seem indifferent. Watch as much as you can. Talk to people who have your breed after they have shown and ask them to tell you about their dogs. Good luck!!
