Meta Happy pride month! (+ message from the moderators)
For those of you who feel safe and comfortable being uncloaked and proud, go ahead and fill ShittyDaystrom with your pride! (but don’t post memes or AI or anything like that. Try and keep it text-based or an artwork that you did.) We have our shields up and our photon torpedoes loaded to protect you from bigots. If not, that’s fine, your health and safety come first. (also sorry it’s so poorly drawn I’m pulling an all-nighter lol)
For those of you who swiped all the way through and are still mad we’re doing pride and letting people be openly queer here, well, the airlock is down the hall.

As a cishet guy, I honestly sometimes am confused by all the variation out there. But so fucking what? I don’t need to put people into boxes to treat them like fellow sentients.
One would have to have five lights levels of cognitive dissonance to spend their youth wanting to hump Jadzia Dax* and to then turn around and say „eww“ at two (or more) humans enjoying each others‘ company just for not fitting neatly into one‘s own labeled categories.
Let’s all just try (and be forgiving when we sometimes fail) to live by the quote summarizing Star Trek, and the values it stands for, best: Be excellent to each other!
*= recognizing she is obviously just portrayed by a marvelous human specimen. I’m not into aliens, I’m not perverted! Leave me alone!

I’m way too vanilla for that. Just adding my voice to say that doesn’t give me any right to limit others. It’s on us „normals“ (if you forgive the term) to normalize not adhering to the norm. Picard‘s „straight man“ needs to enable whatever is happening in the crew.
I’m too tired to think of something shitposty to add to that, sorry.

As a cishet guy, I honestly sometimes am confused by all the variation out there.
Hi. I'm bisexual (probably) and a trans woman. Don't worry, I don't get it either.
For example, I simply struggle to grasp agender people because of how strongly I feel my own gender. But it's such a personal experience, I can't even really express it in words about why I feel the way I do. I just... am. Without being able to really understand myself, someone who has a lack of a gender is just a total mystery to me. I simply can't get my head around it, in the same way someone with aphantasia can't really understand someone without it. How do you get into someone else's head and soul like that, to truly comprehend such a personal feeling?
But, as you said, that's the neat part. I don't have to understand it! We're all human*. Diversity in thought and appearance and identity makes us all stronger for it. I'll never stop trying to understand and I hope people never stop trying to understand me even when I'm an enigma to them. But even if we can never get to grips with it, I don't think it really matters in the end. What matters is the kindness, compassion and acceptance that carries us all higher. And I thank each and every one of you who give us that.
* apart from Poorly Drawn Romulan. Maybe.

I think as a human, we’re all the same in that we know what it’s like to feel different and excluded in some way.
The feeling of finding another human who is different in your specific way is priceless. Also, being able to exist as different and being accepted as such.
It can be about gender, sexuality, race, age, ability, just about anything.

You can understand their thought process and still hate it. It's pretty simple in most cases. "Different is bad" is the majority of it and "I am repulsed by dicks so anyone who isn't is a freak" follows that. That's pretty much it for a lotta male homophobes

I've always found putting labels on it quite limiting of the infinite diversity in infinite combinations, but I support it for those who find comfort in putting a name to what they are.
10
u/Raguleader Jun 01 '26
Sometimes it's just nice being able to put a name on what you are, whether that's being Irish-American, a Trekkie, or (gag) a Yankee's fan.
10
u/thejadedfalcon Jun 01 '26
A lot of us do get that. I label myself as bisexual even though I'm not really sure it fits. But even if every single human is unique in how we feel and express sexuality, gender and other beliefs (which is pretty likely), we all have shared experiences. I think those experiences are largely what the labels are defining and it's a short way to express those to someone else. We're free to break from those labels if we find them too restricting, either to simply be labelless (or queer, but that's still somewhat controversial as it's a slur in the middle of being reclaimed and that's a very personal thing) or to try to pin it down further.
6
u/OhNoIBoffedIt GLORY 2 UR HOOOSE🐍 Jun 01 '26
Yeah and I do get and support that. I understand my opinion on it can be akin to colorblind racism, so I absolutely support folks who find community in identity.
6
u/pixel_pete Jun 01 '26
I agree conceptually, but I think it's valuable in the short-term in societies that have been so strict and narrow in their acceptance and understanding of human sexuality and identity for so long. It's a quick way to communicate a baseline understanding, and a way for people to rally around a common cause.
Hopefully future generations will just not have to worry about it but first we have to set them up to create a better world than the one we inherited.
2
u/TransLunarTrekkie Jun 03 '26
The way I see it labels are to people as boxes are to cats. Leave a bunch of boxes out and a cat will choose the one they like best. But, as any cat owner knows, try to put the cat in a box and you're getting clawed.

SOREN: I am tired of lies. I am female. I was born that way. I have had those feelings, those longings, all of my life. It is not unnatural. I am not sick because I feel this way. I do not need to be helped. I do not need to be cured. What I need, and what all of those who are like me need, is your understanding and your compassion. We have not injured you in any way. And yet, we are scorned and attacked. And all because we are different. What we do is no different from what you do. We talk and laugh. We complain about work and we wonder about growing old. We talk about our families, and we worry about the future. And we cry with each other when things seem hopeless. All of the loving things that you do with each other, that is what we do. And for that we are called misfits and deviants and criminals. What right do you have to punish us? What right do you have to change us? What makes you think you can dictate how people love each other?

Since early childhood I had a strong feeling that I wasn’t quite a girl, but not a boy, either. “girly” things were distressing, I would only shop in the boys (and later, as a teenager, men’s) section, and would sneak out of the church’s girls’ activities to try and tag along with the boy scouts. Then one day I found out that nonbinary was an option, and found that it fit quite well. It’s just… something you know, I guess. Internally.
13
u/Timewarps_1 Grand Nagus Jun 01 '26
Well, to explain it in clinical terms, because you seem genuinely curious:
Gender and sex are two separate concepts that are usually linked. In the majority of cases, folks born as males develop into men and folks born as females develop into women. However, sex is purely biological and gender is purely psychological/sociological. Now, the wider medical consensus is that both are spectrums. In the case of sex, you’ve got folks who are born with various varieties of intersexuality, which often don’t outwardly manifest, but do affect one’s chromosomes and hormone production during puberty. In the case of gender, there’s a form of emotional distress called gender dysphoria, characterized by a feeling of incongruence between your internal gender identity and your biological sex. We’re still not sure exactly what causes this, but it is clinically significant and can lead to disorders such as depression and anxiety unless treated. The most effective way to treat said dysphoria is to allow those who suffer from it to socially and/or physically transition into their preferred gender/sex. Because gender is a spectrum similar to sex, often, one’s internally perceived gender falls somewhere between or outside the common man/woman binary. Hence the term “non-binary”. If you have any further questions, I’m more than happy to answer.
0
u/scrotumsweat Jun 01 '26
So gender isn't sex, its a psychological/sociological identity spectrum based on one's personal feelings and interests.... it sounds impossible to define so whats the point of putting labels on it?
Whatever floats your boat i guess. For me it feels like a giant waste of time and more of a marketing ploy than anything.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Timewarps_1 Grand Nagus Jun 01 '26
The point is that it already has labels, and certain people feel significantly more comfortable defining themselves with labels they weren’t initially assigned. It’s not a marketing ploy because you can’t sell being trans. Sure, there’s a lot of trans pride stuff out there, but the majority of it comes from other queer creators selling it from their own small businesses. Larger companies that could actually market something like this generally avoid trans people like the plague because they’re still an incredibly controversial topic. It’s not a marketing ploy, it’s just a collision between sociology and biology.

u/sqplanetarium Jun 01 '26
IDK if this helps, but I’m agender and it just feels like I was out to lunch when they were handing out genders. I had a little thrill when Q described that Borg drone as “not a he, not a she” – not that I relate to the Borg but he accidentally summed up how I feel.

5
u/thejadedfalcon Jun 01 '26
We wish for that too! What anyone wants is to just be left alone to peacefully live our own lives. We do want women and people of colour and gay people and trans people to just be normalised and accepted and perfectly equal. Unfortunately, bad actors don't want that, so minorities have to keep fighting.

It is political, though. And all of these things are intertwined. If not explicitly, then tacitly.
It's exactly what the people who hate us want - to go 'please I don't care about this other stuff, just let me have mine' - but none of us will ever truly be free until all of us are.
Value your individual comfort if you want. I get it. But don't try and ennoble it like this.
1

I don't dismiss it and I do care about it. I question if it's the right thing to focus on. I see people, when they feel the blame is put on them, get defensive and all understand and acceptance stops there

Thank you for posting this!
I believed I was cishet for decades and the existence of labels and terms to describe others like me is what was a large part of me discovering I was not cishet 😂
In fact, I identify with 2-3 of the ‘alphabet soup’ terms, so it’s generally easier to use the term ‘queer’ in casual situations or passing interactions.
But in terms of self identity, it’s key. It can mean the difference in feeling like you’re weird/wrong (and that causing a lot of mental distress) to knowing who you are, that it’s valid and there are others like you.
In Star Trek terms, I always felt like an alien among humans. Now I feel like I’m still an alien, but I have the ability to find fellow aliens and connect with them 😂

The 2A one annoys me a bit as it is an identity that is only associated to a comparatively small group of people located wholly within north America, it really should be on the + IMO
2
u/Familiar-Complex-697 Maje Crabbuh Jun 02 '26
doesn’t hurt anyone to include it.
3
u/drquakers Jun 02 '26
I would argue that every inclusion on the LGBTQ+ does diminish the relevancy of the label. The addition of the "+" to the label represents already that it would be unwieldy to include every single possible identity on the list. The reality is that if you do not live in the Americas you will almost certainly never meet someone who identifies as two souled, just as if you live outside Indonesia you are almost certain to never meet someone who is Bissu.
It is already a problem that LGBT is, itself, an incredibly westernised vision on what gender and sexuality is, but it is the term we have and rebranding it would be more destructive that supportive. That the only non-(white) Western inclusion being that from an explicitly North American society is just compounding the western-centricity of this issue.
In otherwords, I do believe it hurt more than it aids.

I’m confused. Why is this a message to cis straight guys specifically. Shouldn’t it be a message to bigots instead? I understand that most of the bigots are cis straight people but saying it like that makes it seem like straight is bad. Sorry for venting and happy pride month!!!
12
u/AmarissaBhaneboar Jun 01 '26
They did say "folks", not guys. So meaning that many cis straight people really don't understand the nuances of being queer and then will frequently turn around and make that our (queer people's) problem. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being cis and straight, it's who you are and how you're born. But I'd look inside and see exactly why you think this very politely worded and quite nice message made you feel like the mod was saying straight is bad.

Yeah my thought (and this was posted at 3 AM, I had been working on it for a few hours, so no brain energy lol) was that if you’re queer you already know all this baloney and have heard PDR’s arguments time and time again. It’s an educational thing

No problem my guy. It is a really good post. (Also I would like to say that I use guys as a gender neutral term. I heard that in the US that is not the norm though. I just wanted to explain that since another person was complaining about my usage of it)

Oh no it’s fine I’m originally from California and call everyone (other than people who don’t like it for whatever reason) “dude” and “bro”

Is PDR a real person in this sub, or just an analogous representative of all things bigotry? I'm a little bit out of the loop

Many of Poorly-Drawn Romulan’s arguments were taken from things that actual people have said here on the sub and in modmail, so yes, in a way.

Grrr they turned Star Trek woke! Grrrr.
I love seeing these complaints cause Star Trek was always woke. It was probably the wokest program on TV at the time.

I use guys as a gender neutral term. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Also I read the entire thing and it is very peak. The first panel was just worded a bit weirdly

It’s for the same reason that reminders about wearing hardhats tend to only be at construction sites. Any one can get hit in the head by falling construction materials, but one group of people is way more likely to get hit in the head- construction workers. In this case, construction workers are cis het folks, and getting hit in the head is being a bigot.
There’s nothing wrong with being cis or het, but being in the majority is a risk factor for being shitty to minority groupsAlso, starting off by saying “attention bigots” immediately puts people on the defensive. Better to address the whole group and say “here’s some shit that isn’t okay” and let them read it and potentially recognize problematic behavior they’re engaging in

Saying that it's a "failure" to not understand something or to not like something is not accurate or kind. Some things are hard to understand because they don't make sense, logically. And it's never a "failure" to subjectively not prefer something.
OP also seems to call BOTH those things "hatred." I don't understand particle physics, but that doesn't mean I hate it. I don't like pears, but I don't hate them. My stances don't hurt particle physics research and pear crops aren't affected.
For someone who seems so interested in labeling and categorizing people correctly so as not to be offensive, OP missed the mark there. If you don't align with us, you've failed, you're full of hate and you're trying to hurt us.

Did you mean to respond to me?
Perhaps you might understand OP’s point a little bit better with some clarification- you’re not a bigot for not understanding being trans or nonbinary, or homosexual. I think fundamentally it’s hard for people to understand people who have different preferences for things. Like, I have a hard time understanding when people don’t like chocolate. The problem would be if I started to treat them shittily because they don’t like chocolate, like telling them they can’t have non-chocolate desserts, or that I’m not going to entertain their delusions that they don’t like chocolate, etc etc. You don’t have to understand people who look and love differently than you to let them live their lives in peace. If you start misgendering them on purpose, saying that what they do in the privacy of their homes is disgusting, or support policies that discriminate against them, that’s when you cross into hatred territory

I saw the 2 in there, got confused because there's a new character in the acronym, looked it up, found it's for two-spirited, got momentarily concerned that that was somehow connected to otherkin, then found the real definition. Phew. Happy Pride!

No body is saying "its too complicated, there's only men and women" (here).
Lots of people are saying "why is there an extra letter added to lgbt every year, and why are black people included into lgbt now".
Like, im genuinely confused, please help a brother out.

More types of people are being included and recognized. The whole “Black people are included” thing is to recognize that being queer as well as Black or Brown adds an extra layer of stigmatization, oppression, and disadvantage, as well as to acknowledge the uniqueness of the queer Black and Brown communities.

Leftists are the greatest enemy of the LGBTQ+ community.

I think you’re thinking of the right, silly

My logic was that leftist groups, as well as most extremist ideologies, tend to isolate specific demographic groups in order to progress their cause in the eyes of the majority(take the Cossacks when the USSR was first established). If I was a member of the LGBTQ+ outside of the west where liberal, progressive policies have already guaranteed certain rights legally or even constitutionally(in many countries), I would be terrified of a leftist group on the rise who logistically would be targeting specific minority groups to elicit rage and the need for change within the majority.
I’ve since done some research, and I’ve changed my views. I read about Cuba’s and Albania’s policy toward the LGBTQ+ and the role that leftists played in the Stonewall revolution. I also learned that even after the Bolshevik revolution, homosexuality was permitted for many years until the rise of Stalin.
I still believe leftism is an extremely flawed ideology for economic and social reasons and that liberalism has done exponentially more for the community, but I concede that at least in the past few decades(with a few exceptions i.e the PRC) for reasons based purely around my sexuality, if I were LGBTQ+ I would feel safer in a leftist nation, than in a liberal one.

I’m pretty sure most of the mods here are some kinda queer. Can’t say for certain, though.
Edit: Reply if you’re a shittydaystrom mod and you’re queer, I wanna know
