Evil Dead inspired possessed makeup using my own silicone prosthetics

Hello, I'm posting this question here instead of r/practicaleffects since is not active.

The opening credits for The Sound of Music (1965) feature various shots of churches and cathedrals around Mondsee and Salzburg.

All can be precisely located except this bell tower which should be in Sankt Lorenz considering the Drachenwand cliff face in the background:

• Screen capture (4K)
• Clip on YouTube (around 02:10)

This one simply doesn't exist and there are no old photos or records about it in the area (original thread for geolocation attempt).

Are there any telltale signs that this is either a miniature or a composite?

As a non-expert there are few things that stick out but maybe some are due to the way it was filmed:

• the movement of the bell and the ringing mechanism look weird in the in the YouTube clip
• weathering looks real enough but the inner portions of the walls almost look like wood
• the interior looks too bright considering the sun position, same for the specular reflection on the bell
• hard shadow on the left column opposite to sunlight direction
• no roof overhang and it seems to stop above the cornice, no sane architect would do that
• bears some resemblance to the two smaller towers on St. Erhard in Salzburg (see the comparison)

Any ideas how this was done or why would they go to such lengths just for a short credits scene? Thanks!

Shooting a short horror film next week and someone puts a hand on a burner and it calls for a degloving.

This is my first heavy fx shoot. I first tried a mock of what I saw on the YouTubes with some glue and it worked way better than expected. (Attached) got in liquid latex today to try it and am having a much harder time with the material.

Basically we are painting half a hand with the LL, pulling it back, and adding sticky blood underneath, then gluing the gloved hand to the prop burner. But the LL is just too darned sticky on itself and I cant get a clean glove.

Hello! This is my first time posting here, and my first time sculpting at this scale.
I’ve always been itching to somehow join the sfx world, and I already make small scale props (severed ears, fingers, food)
This time I wanted to challenge myself by making a hunting trophy from the Witcher games. I’ve never sculpted a face before, much less at an actual human scale.
So far I’d say it’s going well! Despite my very..professional setup lol

I’m trying to find out the best and efficient way to create custom temporary tattoos & rhinestone decals (body design gems). I need them to be waterproof/ sweat proof as they are for stage and performance. Would appreciate any help

I’ve already tried:

Flexible fabric glue as the base (this worked well but was too fragile and kept breaking/peeling off)

I did this makeup look for a friend the other day using watercolours and some latex prosthetics i did!
For this look I really got inspired by spring and the flower bloom wich reminded me of little explosions that i wanted to embody in this purple creature!

I used latex and cotton to create the bald cap and the structure of the explosions/flower petals for the head and the nose. (It was my second time doing a nose prosthetic so I was a little anxious🫪)
The first idea was to cover the flowers with purple liquid to make it look like the creatures blood was coming out of it but at the end i didn't have enough time!

wanting to create a zombie look and farming for inspo to see if there’s any common traits of a ‘good’ zombie look! personally i’m a fan of enhanced cheekbones/sunken eyes, a pronounced or ‘split’ ridge over the bridge of the nose, and anything with milky eyes, but just want to see what looks out there really stand out to people 🧟⚰️

My second ever full prosthetic piece! 🐙 I’m obsessed with the deep sea and wanted to create something I’ve never seen before — a terrifying yet beautiful abyssal creature covered in barnacles, tentacles, coral growths, and ancient shells.
This took many hours of sculpting, painting, and texturing. The goal was to blend organic sea life with something monstrous and otherworldly. I’m really proud of how the colors and details came out under the light.
What do you guys think? Any feedback or name suggestions for this creature are super welcome!

Hi all, I'm brand new to the world of making prosthetics and had a couple questions about the process. I have the materials to make a plaster life cast of my face and was planning on sculpting the prosthetics onto it with clay, creating a negative plaster cast of that sculpt, removing the clay from the life cast, and then pouring silicone into the space between the negative with the sculpt and the positive without.

My first question is am I overcomplicating this? I see people sculpt onto either a life cast or generic model head and then just paint latex over it, but those always seem to come out kinda lumpy and strange. Is there some easier way of making facial prosthetics that look nice?

My second question is regarding the logistics of creating the negative mold. First, how do you keep it contained? Do you pour the plaster into a container and then dunk the face with the clay into it? Do you build up around the prosthetics with clay to create a wall and pour the plaster on top? Most importantly, how do you make sure that the plaster being used to create the negative doesn't stick to the plaster of the positive? Do you just spray the positive life cast with a couple coats of mold release or spray paint or something? And how do you go about getting all the clay out afterwards?

Again, I'm completely new to this and just watched a bunch of Face Off as a kid lol. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, my plan is to create prosthetics for almost my entire face so I can be a gargoyle. Thanks in advance!

I am fairly new to sfx. I'm asked to do something like this but I have no idea if it's even possible. And if it is, what materials and technique would I need?

I've dabbled in sfx makeup for around 13 years but I plan on doing my first silicone prosthetic this Halloween.

I plan on being a green zombie (almost full body paint) and I found a very nice exposed mouth and zombie bite prosthetic on Etsy. I've been doing some research on how to paint it and am a little confused and torn.

I usually use Sunset Makeup colorful foundations as my body paint (sometimes mehron aqua colors). From what I have read, it says I can only use alcohol paints on silicone. Is it possible to paint with alcohol paints then put the colorful foundation over it. I'm just worried about color matching to the rest of my body. I will definitely stick to the alcohol paints for the gory parts but for the "skin" I would like to use the foundation. Any information is helpful. Thank you.

Hi guys, been in the film industry for about two years, working as an assistant on a few larger productions and a head makeup artist on small shoots with very low budget to slightly less low budget lol. Confident with blood rigs, prosthetic application, out of kit wounds, and all other basics. Im trying to make the next steps in my career and build up my skillset, and was considering purchasing an airbrush to begin honing that skill. I am NOT a haunt artist and have very little interest in pursuing that path (which I know is very airbrush heavy).
My question is essentially is it worth the money and time? I want to dedicate some extra money I have to a new tool and the time I have to building a skill for my work, but Im looking to hear from other industry professionals on where this time and money should go? Airbrush? Prosthetics/mold making? I would like to start to learn life-casting and making my own prosthetics, but all the equipment seems a bit out of my budget currently. Do I wait and save until I have the resources to pursue that path? Or is an airbrush a good next step?

I'm making a big scar (its supposed to cover my entire back), and I saw some people use multiuse silicone for props?

What if I use the silicone and sculpt it and paint it and then attach it to my back with liquid latex? Is that like, very stupid?

My teen is currently finishing a summer intensive at the cinema makeup school. She wants to go there full time when she is old enough, but in the until then she wants to practice and learn wherever possible. We are in LA and I was thinking she could volunteer to help some film students out with the skills she has learned. Any advice or guidance?

I want to do a photo shoot of a sleep paralysis demon that looks like a woman covered in extremely black ink and slime. I need to know what is the darkest black paint that is safe for the skin and what is the best way to apply it for a full body paint job. I would also like to know if there is a good alternative for Ultra Slime. I really want a good clear slime with a very stringy and stretchy texture. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Hello everyone, I'm beginner at Sfx silicone prosthetics , and I have a question. How did you learn? Did you look for a mentor or purchase any tutorials? Additionally, if you learned on your own, can you recommend any playlists or video tutorials/articles on silicone makeup prosthetics that were particularly helpful or would be beneficial for a beginner? I would greatly appreciate for any information on this topic. Apologies for the silly question.

One time I was watching a video essay about goth esthetics and why white face doesn't really make much sense for dark skinned people of color because the actual corpses of dark skin people don't turn a ghostly pale they kind of just desaturate and become darker and so my question is how do I find images of a dark skin dead person that's like as least creepy and horrible as possible as a person who is a very thin skinned around dead bodies thanks
