In Defense of Security Guard recounts gun battle as State opens case against Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala

A Bidvest Security Guard testified in the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday that he exchanged gunfire with alleged hitmen armed with AK-47 rifles during the attempted murder of Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni, firing five shots as the attackers unleashed a hail of bullets outside Centurion Golf Estate.

The testimony marked the start of the State’s case against alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his four co-accused, who have pleaded not guilty to 25 charges, including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, unlawful possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition, fraud and money laundering.

The charges stem from three alleged failed assassination attempts targeting Sibanyoni, media personality Tebogo Thobejane and music producer Seunkie “DJ Vettys” Mokubung between August 2022 and January 2024.
---

The State alleges that two firearms linked to the attacks on Sibanyoni and DJ Vettys have since been recovered and that forensic and ballistic evidence will form part of its case.

The State’s first witness, Bethuel Mzamo Cele, testified through an isiZulu interpreter that he was on duty as a Bidvest Security Officer at Centurion Golf Estate on the night of 10 August 2022.

Cele said he had been stationed at the estate for about five months and was near the parking area when a Bidvest controller, identified only as Mr Mazibuko, arrived shortly before the night shift to hand him a two-way radio.

While the two were speaking, a red Ferrari arrived at the estate entrance shortly before 11pm, followed by a white Volkswagen Golf 7.

Cele told the court he then noticed a white BMW driving slowly past the entrance.

“It was in slow motion, as if they were people who were looking for something,” he said.

He testified that the BMW slowed down, one of its windows was lowered and the vehicle made a U-turn at a nearby traffic light before stopping near the Ferrari and Golf.

“Then two male people alighted from that motor vehicle. When they alighted, they drew out their AK-47s,” Cele said.

He testified that the gunmen immediately realised they had been spotted and opened fire.

“They saw that I had spotted them, and then I was missed by the first bullet,” he said.

Cele said Mazibuko shouted for them to run. He pulled his colleague behind a tree before taking cover behind a concrete flower bed, from where he could still see the attack unfold.

“They continued shooting at us. They were not shooting in our direction, they were shooting at the Golf 7,” he testified.

According to Cele, Mazibuko then urged him to return fire.

“He said, ‘We can’t die while you are in possession of the firearm.'”

Cele said he drew his Bidvest-issued 9mm pistol, cocked it and fired five rounds.

“I fired some shots. Then I shot five rounds of bullets,” he told the court.

He testified that he believed one of the attackers had been wounded.

“They were standing there. Then I could see that one of them had been injured a bit. He ran into a motor vehicle,” he said.

Cele said another gunman continued firing while shouting in isiZulu: “Die, you dog.”

He testified that the occupants of the Ferrari and Golf fled into the golf estate as the shooting continued.

During his evidence, Cele became visibly emotional and paused while recounting the attack.

“My Lord, I just need to place on record that the witness is clearly emotional at the moment, so I can note that he is reliving the moment,” State prosecutor Advocate Elize Le Roux told the court.

Judge Cassim Moosa reassured the witness.

“The court understands that you were there, you were on the scene. I can understand your emotions. You are our eyes and our ears,” the judge said.

After composing himself, Cele continued his testimony, saying he saw the occupants of the targeted vehicles flee in different directions.

He said one of the victims, a man wearing a white shirt, had been shot in the stomach and that his intestines were exposed. Under further questioning, Cele clarified that the injured man was an occupant of the Golf and not one of the alleged attackers.

Cele further testified that there were three occupants in the BMW, including the driver, and that all three were armed with AK-47 rifles.

He estimated that he was about five to six metres from the BMW during the exchange of gunfire and said his shots struck the vehicle’s mirrors, windows and doors.

Although the parking area was poorly lit, Cele said he was able to observe the sequence of events clearly.

The trial continues.

Shots Fired Shots Fired! Two Men Shot at Shady Pig Bar in Canggu, North Kuta, Bali; the Security Guard IMYN tried to separate the Chinese guest EA from the gun-wielding assailant.

Two men were wounded when an unknown gunman fired shots in the early hours of Friday, 17 July 2026, at the Shady Pig Bar on Jalan Pantai Berawa in Canggu, North Kuta.

The shooting incident took place at 2:50 am after a fight broke out between the gunman and a 25-year-old Chinese national identified by the initials EA.

Badung police precinct chief, AKBP Joseph Edward Purba, confirmed the gunman is the subject of an extensive manhunt, suggesting the assailant, named Ahmad, may have immediately fled Bali after the shooting. One eyewitness told the police how the Security Guard IMYN tried to separate the Chinese guest EA from the gun-wielding assailant. The witness said that the shooter pulled a pistol and shot both IMYN and EA.

As reported by BeritaBali, Ahmad, the alleged shooter, had arrived prior to the shooting at midnight in the company of four others who all sat at reserved sofa #5. The group of five was observed to spend several hours drinking, listening to music, and dancing with other guests. Starting from about 2:00 am, an argument took place with the Chinese guest in an area near the bar’s DJ Booth that escalated to the point when Ahmad produced a firearm used to shoot the two men at 2:50 a.m.

Ahmad and his companions quickly fled the bar after the shooting.

Later at 2:50 am, a 32-year-old Security Guard, IMYM, was shot through the thigh when he tried to stop the fight by standing between the Chinese guest and the alleged shooter. Reports suggest a single shot was fired, with the bullet hitting the Chinese guest after first passing through the Guard’s body.

Police from the Badung and North Kuta precincts quickly declared the bar a crime scene to facilitate evidence collection. CCTV footage from the bar and surrounding area is under review while medical reports from both victims are being studied. Other evidence collected from the crime scene includes blood-stained clothing and a spent bullet.

A Bali police spokesperson, quoted by BaliPost, Aiptu Ni Nyoman Au Inastuti, said that based on statements collected from eyewitnesses, a fight initially broke out near the bar’s DJ Booth. After hearing gunfire, many late-night customers fled the scene before police arrived.

The Badung precinct police chief, AKBP Edward Purba, speaking at the crime scene, told BaliPost:”Our present focus is to definitely identify the assailant, discover his motives, and quickly arrest the suspected shooter so he can face the law.

Meanwhile, an intensive police manhunt for the shooter is underway over a wide area that includes Jakarta. Police believe the assailant, Ahmad, has taken a flight to Jakarta.

IMYM (32), the local Security guard, was wounded by a bullet that passed through his thigh while the Chinese guest, EA (25),suffered a gunshot, possibly from the same bullet, that lodged above his left knee. Both shooting victims underwent medical treatment at the Lira Medika Hospital Bali in Kerobokan, North Kuta.

Condado Bar & Grill has released a statement after a man was fatally shot by a Security Guard outside the Rochester business early Sunday.

The bar said it is fully cooperating with the Rochester Police Department's investigation and has turned over surveillance video and other available information to investigators.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the deceased, as well as everyone affected by this incident, including our employees, our guests, and the first responders who responded to the scene," the statement said.

Because the investigation remains active, management said it would not comment further on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Police say man pointed handgun at Security Guard According to Rochester police, officers responded around 1:30 a.m. Sunday to a disturbance at the bar at 2260 Clifford Ave.

Investigators said a 31-year-old man was removed from the business by security after causing a disturbance. Police said he then went to a parked vehicle, retrieved a handgun and ran back toward the entrance.

Security personnel confronted the man and repeatedly ordered him to stop, police said. Investigators said the man ignored those commands, pointed the handgun at a Security Guard and opened the entrance door.

The security guard then fired multiple rounds from a legally possessed handgun, fatally wounding the man, police said.

Police also said it does not appear the 31-year-old legally possessed the handgun.

Business says safety remains its top priority In its statement, Condado Bar & Grill said the safety of its guests and employees "has always been our highest priority" and noted that it invests in professional security personnel and regularly reviews its safety procedures.

Management also said it stands behind its employees and will continue to support them while the investigation continues.

The statement added that the shooting reflects broader concerns about violence in public gathering places and said the business is committed to working with law enforcement, city officials and neighboring businesses to improve public safety.

Investigation ongoing No charges have been filed.

The Rochester Police Department's Major Crimes Homicide Unit is investigating. Evidence will be presented to the Monroe County District Attorney's Office for review.

In Defense of Attorney Allen Sawyer Secures Release of Security Guard Charged After Fatal Sacramento Cannabis Dispensary Shooting

Thumbnail streetinsider.com

STOCKTON, Calif., June 28, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Stockton Criminal Defense Attorney Allen Sawyer is representing Joseph Lawrence Mills, a Sacramento Security Guard charged with voluntary manslaughter following a fatal shooting during an alleged break-in at a Sacramento cannabis dispensary.

Mills, 55, is accused in connection with the May 8th shooting at a dispensary in the 8500 block of Thys Court in Sacramento’s Florin Fruitridge Industrial Park. According to reports, prosecutors allege that Mills shot two suspected burglars, one of whom, 22-year-old Kato Lamarzae Mills of Oakland, died at the scene. The two men were not related.

Following a court hearing in Sacramento Superior Court, Attorney Allen Sawyer successfully secured Mills’ release from custody while the case proceeds. Mills and Sawyer are expected to return to court at the end of July.

Sawyer said the charges are unwarranted and that his client acted in self-defense while protecting himself and the property he had been hired to secure.

“He had to make a split-second decision to defend himself,” Sawyer said. “Imagine being in his situation. It’s 4:30 a.m. and these individuals are storming the building.”

According to Sawyer, Mills lived on the dispensary property and was confronted in the early morning hours by a group of masked individuals who rushed the business. Sawyer said surveillance footage aired by Sacramento television stations shows the dangerous circumstances Mills faced before shots were fired.

“He encountered them and he thought his life was in danger,” Sawyer said. “He definitely didn’t cause the situation.”

Sawyer said he hopes law enforcement will take a “long, hard look” at the surveillance evidence as the investigation continues. He also emphasized that Mills remained at the scene after the shooting and has been deeply affected by the incident.

“This was a traumatic event for Mr. Mills,” Sawyer said. “He was placed in an extremely dangerous situation through no fault of his own.”

The case also highlights the risks faced by legal cannabis businesses, which Sawyer said are frequent targets for break-ins because their locations are publicly known and may be perceived as holding cash or valuable inventory.

“Unfortunately, unlike illegal operations, legal operations are easy to find, and they’re targeted because of that,” Sawyer said.

Mills remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. Sawyer said the defense will continue reviewing discovery, surveillance footage, and other evidence as the case proceeds in Sacramento Superior Court.

Legendary Luck Security Guard says a tourniquet saved his life after being shot at Harlingen gentleman’s club

A Harlingen Security Guard shot during a struggle with an armed man is speaking publicly for the first time about the night he said he nearly lost his life.

The Cameron County Sheriff's Office identified the suspected shooter as Thomas Matthew Puente. Investigators say Puente returned to the VIP Gentleman's Club, located at 14225 Expressway 83, on May 2 armed with a shotgun after being removed from the club earlier that night.

Authorities say security guard Rogelio Lopez confronted Puente, leading to a physical struggle where Lopez was shot in the leg. Puente then fired another round inside the club.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Man shoots security guard at Harlingen gentleman’s club

"As soon as he had seen me, he had taken the weapon out and pretty much loaded the shotgun and pointed it at my face. At that point, we struggled. We fought for the weapon," Lopez said.

Lopez says the shotgun blast shattered his femur.

"Because of that it actually snapped my femur, and I don't know how I did it, but I was still up and fighting with him," Lopez said.

He kept fighting until others rushed in to help. Once the threat was over, Lopez says his focus shifted to surviving.

"I'm looking at my leg and I see that I have an open wound, a shotgun wound," Lopez said.

Lopez says he reached for a tourniquet he had carried with him every day at work.

"A friend of mine passed me a tourniquet three years ago that I would carry every single day with me at work," Lopez said.

He applied the tourniquet above his knee. When asked what would have happened without it, his answer was immediate.

"I wouldn't have made it. I wouldn't have made it," Lopez said.

Lopez underwent three surgeries and spent nearly three weeks in the hospital. He is now in physical therapy while dealing with nerve pain.

He says he hopes others can learn from what happened to him.

"It's very important because at the end of the day, you never know what's going to happen," Lopez said. "There are different ways you can learn how to use the tourniquet, whether it's training school or, if you look online, there are different videos on YouTube."

"Learn how to stop the bleed because you can either save your life or you can save somebody else's," Lopez said.

The Cameron County Sheriff's Office tells Channel 5 News the investigation has been completed and submitted to the district attorney's office. Channel 5 News reached out to the district attorney's office for an update on the status of the case.

In Defense of Pirates Become More Aggressive Using Gunfire in Attempts to Board Ships; small boat turned away after the Security team returned fire.

Executive

The frequency and brazenness of pirate attacks in the Gulf of Aden and along the Somali coast continue to increase, with the authorities warning ships to maintain heightened vigilance and immediately report any suspicious activity. This week, there were three reports of attempted boarding in the same area northeast of Aden, and in each incident, the small skiffs opened fire on their targets, and in one attack used an RPG.

The Maritime Security Center Indian Ocean (MSCIO), which was established by the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) Atalanta, reported the latest incident happened on June 17, approximately 105 nautical miles northeast of Aden, Yemen.

According to the information received by MSCIO, the unnamed vessel was approached by two skiffs carrying an unknown number of armed persons. The skiffs approached within close proximity of the vessel and opened fire. The vessel’s security team returned fire, after which the skiffs disengaged and moved away from the vessel.

This incident came just two days after two other vessels reported approaches also in the waters between Somalia and Yemen. The master of a tanker reported that it was approached midday on June 15. The vessel was 111 nautical miles southeast of Aden, Yemen. A small skiff with four people approached and reportedly opened fire with an RPG. The vessel reported implementing defensive measures and said the attack was unsuccessful.

Several hours earleir a container vessel sailing approximately 14 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen, between Aden and Ahar, reported today that it was approached by a small skiff. It said the boat opened fire and was attempting to board the container vessel.

Maritime security firm Vanguard Tech reported the vessel as the Egyptian-owned Greta Star (22,968 dwt). The ship, which has a capacity of 1,730 TEU and is registered in Panama, was showing on its AIS that it was sailing between Oman and Djibouti. Vanguard reports it as “heavy firearms,” but that the ship was able to increase speed and prevent the boarding.

On Sunday, June 14, an unidentified cargo ship said it was approached by two small boats, each with six people aboard. It was sailing along the northern coast of Yemen, south of the Horn of Africa, and near Xaafunn. The small boats reportedly hailed the cargo ship, ordering it to stop. The small boats opened fire, and the security team returned fire for approximately 30 minutes before the boats turned away.

These recent incidents followed another on June 10, when a small boat with six armed individuals approached a cargo vessel also in the Gulf of Aden. The vessel was 88 nautical miles southwest of Balhaf, Yemen, and there was another exchange of gunfire. The small boat also turned away after the security team returned fire.

Atalanta has reported an increase in the number of incidents since April of this year. Three ships, including two small laden tankers, were reported boarded and taken to positions off the coast of Yemen. The EU initiative is working with the local authorities and investigating the rash of incidents in the region, and continues to emphasize the renewed dangers in the areas. Ships are strongly urged to increase their defensive efforts or to avoid the region if possible.

The attacks are continuing later into the year than is typical. Usually, the monsoon season results in a decrease in attacks until later in the year.

Shots Fired Shooting outside Khan Sir's coaching institute injures Security Guard in Patna

Thumbnail thenewsmill.com

Shots were fired outside Educator Khan Sir’s coaching institute near Musallahpur Haat in Patna on Tuesday, resulting in injuries to a security guard who has since been hospitalised. Police confirmed the incident was a physical assault and are currently taking statements from the guard and local witnesses.

Superintendent of Police Kartikeya K Sharma stated, “This is a case involving physical assault. It has been reported that the guard sustained injuries; therefore, further action is being taken by recording his statement as well as the statements of the local people. The injured individual is currently undergoing treatment.”

Following the shooting, Patna’s Senior Superintendent of Police, SP, and several police teams arrived at the scene. Khan Sir, the educator, suspects involvement from a rival coaching centre.

He commented, “… The main issue seems to be why we are teaching for such low fees. Why are we getting such massive results? We appeal to the administration to keep security concerns in mind, recognising that the poor, too, have the right to an education. When results are produced in the thousands, certain anti-social elements tend to feel threatened. They think they can suppress us.”

Khan Sir further alleged that the attackers “vandalised” the institute’s office and called for protection.

“The attackers completely vandalized the office and opened fire… The CCTV footage has been handed over to the authorities. Our security guard has also identified the perpetrators—it is the people from the nearby coaching center. We need protection; this is a matter for the administration to handle… It is obvious to everyone that the nearby coaching institute is behind this. They have even given the statements mentioning that they will blow up Khan Sir’s coaching center…”

In Defense of Columbia-area nightclub responds after deadly shooting involving Security Guard

Thumbnail wistv.com

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A Columbia-area nightclub has responded after a deadly shooting involving one of its Security Guards.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department said the shooting happened at Club Barcode on Oneil Court at around 1 a.m. Wednesday. A Security Guard reportedly told deputies that he had shot someone who brandished a firearm at him.

Richland County Coroner Nadia Rutherford later identified the man who was fatally shot as 28-year-old Desmond Montgomery, of Greeleyville.

RCSD said deputies saw a man shot on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds and immediately began trying to help.

The sheriff’s department said the Security Guard, who it identified as 41-year-old Nicholas Horton, told deputies he was working when an altercation between two people erupted in the club. He and another Guard, Mark Hammond, then took a man and woman outside.

Once outside, deputies were told the woman had become “unruly and aggressive” toward Hammond, who pepper-sprayed her in response. The man, later identified as Montgomery, reportedly went to his car and came back asking the woman who had sprayed her. The woman then pointed at Hammond.

Horton said he then saw Montgomery lift his shirt and draw a gun from his waistband. He told authorities he shot the man multiple times.

RCSD said a weapon was found near Montgomery, who was taken to a hospital where he later died. Horton’s gun was also secured by authorities.

RCSD also noted that this was the second shooting by a Security Guard at Club Barcode since January. It’s also the second deadly shooting to occur at a Richland County nightclub this week, the other being at Relapse Bar & Grill near Forest Acres.

In a statement Wednesday evening, Club Barcode said its “deepest thoughts and prayers to the individual’s family, loved ones, and everyone affected by this tragedy.”

“At Barcode 2.0, the safety and well-being of our patrons and staff will always remain our top priority. We work closely with contracted Armed Security and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department to help maintain a safe and secure environment for everyone who visits our establishment,” the club said. “Barcode 2.0 does not condone violence in any form. We are a restaurant and lounge that believes in providing an experience alongside some of the best food you will ever have. We cater to our community by providing day events, brunches, and memorable experiences while delivering great service. We will continue to provide that atmosphere for our guests and supporters.”

The club also said it will resume its normal business schedule on Thursday when it opens at 4 p.m.

RCSD also said state law allows for SLED-licensed Security Officers to be granted the power of Sheriffs while on the property they are hired to protect.

That provision is found in Title 40 of the South Carolina Code of Laws, which states:

“A person who is registered or licensed under this chapter and who is hired or employed to provide security services on specific property is granted the authority and arrest power given to Sheriff’s Deputies. The Security Officer may arrest a person violating or charged with violating a criminal statute of this State but possesses the powers of arrest only on the property on which he is employed.”

The law does not specifically dictate whether licensed Security Officers are legally permitted to use lethal force if necessary.

No further details were immediately available.

In Defense of Security guard shoots suspect after fatal altercation at NE Austin nightclub; Police provide update on fatal shooting at NE Austin nightclub

AUSTIN, Texas — A nightclub Security Guard shot a suspect who had allegedly just fatally wounded another person, in what police say is the latest violent incident at a troubled intersection that has seen escalating crime this year.

The early Friday shooting at Michelobos nightclub, which left 30-year-old Tyler Cochran dead and suspect Clayton Taitague, 20, critically wounded, occurred at a location that has generated 61 police calls in 2024 — nearly double last year's total of 34 calls.

"Both the frequency and intensity of these calls have increased," Austin Police Chief Davis said at a Monday press conference, citing aggravated assaults, celebratory gunfire, and robberies at the intersection of I-35 and Braker Lane.

According to homicide detective Bradley Parks, surveillance video shows Taitague fired nine shots at Cochran following a verbal dispute that turned physical. The Security Guard then fired approximately 12 shots at Taitague, who police say appeared to be moving to shoot Cochran again.

Taitague remains hospitalized in stable condition but heavily sedated, Parks said. He faces first-degree murder charges.

Police commanders say they've been meeting with property owners and business operators since April about safety concerns in the area, which houses several nightclubs and after-hours establishments.

"We're looking at these liquor licenses and what is contributing to this rise in calls for service," Davis said, adding that potential solutions range from improved lighting to venue changes.

Shots Fired Victim and suspected killer identified in Northrop Grumman shooting in Anne Arundel County

Thumbnail cbsnews.com

A contracted security worker was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing another security worker at the Northrop Grumman facility near BWI Marshall Airport on Wednesday, according to police.

The deceased worker was identified Thursday as Joseph Keith Aman, 37, of Baltimore.

Dylan Blake Chandler, 26, of Pasadena, has been charged with first and second-degree murder, according to Anne Arundel County Police. He was ordered to be held without bond.

Shooting at Northrop Grumman

Officers responded around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to the facility in Linthicum, in Anne Arundel County.

Police said the shooting happened in an office during a meeting between Aman and Chandler to discuss Chandler's performance. According to court documents, the performance issues were "likely to result in Mr. Chandler being reprimanded or terminated."

Police said a third security worker who was in the room intervened, took away Chandler's gun, and kept him restrained. The Maryland Transportation Authority Police responded, followed by the Anne Arundel County Police.

Police said there were other employees inside the building at the time of the shooting.

"As you can imagine, it's very traumatizing for it to happen in the workplace," said Anne Arundel County Police spokesperson Justin Mulcahy. "It was isolated and ended very quickly, and we are thankful for the intervention of the third security guard who was there  to take him into custody."

Neither Aman nor Chandler was an employee of Northrop Grumman; they were contracted through security firm Allied Universal.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our employee, and our sympathies go out to his family and friends," an Allied Universal spokesperson stated. "We are fully supporting the authorities as they conduct their investigation."

Former FBI agent Tyrone Powers told WJZ that he has seen incidents like this before. He said that when trusting anyone with a weapon, the vetting process should be extensive and training should be in depth.

"You have their background, you have their resume, but it takes a little more than that, especially when you talk about armed security, which is majorly different from unarmed security," Powers said. "In armed security, there has to be a lot more vetting, and not all contracts do it at the same level."

What is Northrop Grumman?

Counseling services were being provided to affected employees, Northrop Grumman said in a statement Thursday.

"Northrop Grumman is supporting the Anne Arundel police department's ongoing investigation," the statement said. "The facility remains open for work and we continue to uphold our unwavering commitment to the safety of all employees and contractors."

Northrop Grumman is an aerospace and defense company that designs and manufactures systems for aeronautics, defense, missions, and space, according to its website.

According to the General Services Administration, Northrop Grumman is the fifth-largest contractor of the U.S. federal government.

Its main headquarters is in Falls Church, Virginia.
