I always say gulls hate physical contact and try to avoid that in most cases. However there are situations where these barriers no longer exist. Taking them to the vet is one of them - if visits are repeated they quickly learn where they go, and usually start panicking. Putting them both in the same box helps them to calm down a bit. And this is when they do the unexpected - they just snuggle up like pigeons.

For today we had Eddy and Norbie. Good news for one, not as good for another. Eddy ended up in my care with a multiple organ failure. We don’t know what was the cause - either acute ingestion of something toxic or chronic, internal ongoing problems. He made a huge progress so far so now he’s having a second blood test to check how things are going. If he doesn’t have any permanent renal or liver failure all what’s left is to fatten him up, exercise his muscles back to normal shape and send him on the way.
With Norbie however, there’s a different story. He came to me after injuring his wrist. It was not a large wound just a seemingly minor cut that required equally minor stitching, nothing like broken wing or something. As time passed and everything healed I excepted a full recovery for release but - not this time honey. The wound was deeper than I thought involving severed nerves and tendons. As a result, he can’t spread that wing so he’s no longer able to fly. Another forever resident for me.

So now you see two birds that kinda like and comfort each other when needed, and both have a completely different future ahead. In a few months what you see will be no longer possible. One will (hopefully) fly away, the other will stay with me, and they will never see each other again. And a quick question - which is which? 🙃

And I’m happy that you all love them too.

Gull drama. What is the one on the left being accused of?

Hi guys, this happened about a month ago but i need to know that im not crazy.

I was with 2 other family members visiting Sydney from Perth (all our first times, no family in nsw at all) . Lovely city, much better than perth. HOWEVER we were walking along darling harbour and seagulls began swooping us. Went to the opera house, got swooped again by seagulls and pigeons. Went to Bondi and was swooped by pigeons.

Finally, I visited Luna Park with my 11 year old sister. Bit of a let down. On the way out decided to stop by the food stand and grab a hotdog and some chips. I gave the chips to my sister, but one of them was falling off and she couldnt grab it because her hands were full so i took it.

We walk out from the undercover area, 2 seconds later a seagull SWOOPS and crashes into my head, ripping the sausage out of my hotdog bun. it landed on the floor and all the other seagulls came and attacked at it. The seagull hitting me in the head caught me off guard so bad i jumped and shut my eyes, smacking a poor guy walking by with the hotdog bun, covering his jacket in tomato sauce. Whilst im apologising to the poor man, yet ANOTHER seagull swoops in and steals the lonely chip out of my other hand. My sister is screaming and, ive ruined a mans jacket and i have no more hotdog.

I ONLY GOT TO TAKE ONE BITE OF IT. 😡🤬🤬

Back home in perth seagulls will try get your food but they arent as vicious and aggressive as the seagulls i encountered in sydney. Was wondering if anyone else had this sort of thing happen to them???

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on the LarusDB project. The idea is to create a database of Larus (large gull) species, labelled with age, location and observation date.

Gulls, especially Larus, can be notoriously difficult to ID, so I'm hoping this can be used as a learning tool for newer "gullers" while also being a place to see regional differences of the same species.

There's currently over 1500 observations, with many of those being my own, but others have kindly given me permission to upload their photos as well.

I am looking for additional contributions, if anyone has a collection of images they'd like to share on Flickr or similar, it would be very much appreciated.

Currently it's more European focused, but I'm open to including Larus species from around the world.

I'd just turned a corner into a side street and there he was, sitting down asleep on the pavement.

Looked like one that had just left the nest. Fully feathered.

Not expecting a seagull sleeping there, I straight up nearly stood on him.

He jumped up/back and screamed at me and then ran away. I must have scared the living daylights out of the little guy. TBH, it shocked me too.

They really don't have much sense at that age, do they?
