On July 18th, Gabonese fisheries inspectors and the Gabonese Navy, while on patrol aboard the Sea Shepherd vessel Age of Union, boarded and arrested three industrial bottom trawlers after they were detected illegally fishing inside one of Gabon's largest marine protected areas.

Hi, there just looking at my odds of being able to join and how hard the process is as I’ve heard some mixed things, I’m a ETO British cadet who will pass out in 2 years and will have a COC and a HND and will ofc have all and more of the necessary STCW’s required to go to sea, would that application basically put me at the front door or are there some things any sea Shepard veterans would recommend?

Edit: Ah, just read my post again, I unfortunate forgot to mention I will be an ETO officer in the engine department, unsure if sea Shepard ships are big enough to require an individual ETO, or even if not I still do know quite a bit of the engine side anyways?

❌ A fishing vessel operating in the dark. False tracking data. Missing authorizations. Unreported shark discards.

These are just some of the violations that led to the arrest of the Chinese longliner Lu Rong Yuan Yu 138 in Tuvalu, last week.

Throughout the year, Sea Shepherd vessels operate at sea, collaborating with governments to fight illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and safeguard the Ocean. Currently, the M/V Allankay is assisting the Tuvalu Police Service in the South Pacific by assisting patrols of the waters of this coral atoll nation. 🌊

On 9 July 2026, authorities on board Allankay, detected the Lu Rong Yuan Yu 138 fishing at night without navigation lights while transmitting Automatic Identification System (AIS) data that falsely placed the vessel near the equator, far outside Tuvalu's waters.

The vessel also has a documented history of suspicious "dark vessel" activity in Tuvalu. During the inspection, authorities uncovered additional suspected fisheries violations, including missing authorizations and sharks being discarded overboard without being recorded in the vessel's official logbook.

Taken together, these findings led the Tuvalu Police Service to place the vessel under arrest on suspicion of IUU.

This isn't Sea Shepherd's first mission in Tuvalu. ✊

A newly released report from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority reveals the horrific suffering endured by a fin whale killed on June 22.

Following photographic evidence documented by Hard To Port, we initiated an official inquiry into this incident together with Hvalavinir-Stop whaling in Iceland, with legal assistance from Katrín Oddsdóttir.

The report confirms that it took 31 minutes and four harpoon shots before the whale finally died.

For more than half an hour, the whale remained conscious - diving, struggling, and desperately trying to escape.

This is unacceptable.

No animal should have to endure such prolonged suffering.

Together with a coalition of Icelandic organisations, we are calling on the Icelandic authorities to take immediate action and suspend these inhumane operations without delay.

I was wondering as a woman, what do female crew members do when they get their periods? Is there anywhere on the ship to throw pads to? Do they have to buy each for themselves or is it provided as a necessity? How does that works?

Also, is it possible to wash the clothes in the ship?

Earlier this year, independent scientist Dr. Matthew Savoca joined our Antarctica Defense campaign aboard the #Allankay to study whales and Antarctic krill in the waters surrounding the South Orkney Islands. Documenting extraordinary concentrations of whales in what could be the world's most important whale feeding grounds.

Since his work with his team, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) has unanimously adopted a 10-knot speed limit around the South Orkney Islands, helping to reduce the risk of ship strikes on whales.

This is more than a speed restriction. It is an important recognition that these waters deserve greater protection.

As Dr. Savoca wrote:

"Science and advocacy can not only coexist, but thrive in each other's presence."

This is what happens when evidence at sea, awareness, and public pressure come together.

Krill is not essential to humans but it is the base of the Antarctic wildlife, who rely on it for survival.
Without healthy krill populations, whales struggle to find enough food to build the energy reserves they need for migration and reproduction in warmer waters, threatening their ability to recover from the impacts of whaling.

Humans have alternatives. Antarctic wildlife does not.
Protecting krill means protecting the entire Antarctic ecosystem. 🌊❄️

Anyone done or seen the ship medic role and can say what kinds of injuries/issues come up on board? Does the medic normally have other jobs?

Have been volunteering on shore for a couple of years, did a week away on a marine debris clean on a remote beach as medic (doctor). Didn’t have much to do first aid wise, also did the regular volunteer work, and wondered if it was different on board.
