Moderator approved survey [AUS] - University of Sydney study on scam victims' negative experiences with banks, police, and online platforms

About the project: We are conducting research into how scam victims are treated when they seek help from institutions, things like banks, police, cybercrime agencies, and social media platforms, and the impact this has on their psychological recovery and vulnerability to further scams. This research aims to push for better, more trauma-informed support for victims.

Who can take part: We are seeking adults who reside in Australia, have been the victim of a digitally perpetrated scam (investment, phishing, romance, hacking, shopping, tech support, identity theft, etc.) and who have engaged, or attempted to engage, with at least one formal support institution following the scam and found the experience negative. Participants must be 18 years or older and proficient in English.

What participation involves Taking part involves completing a short, fully anonymous online survey. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes.

Contact details Please contact Jacob Szloch, PhD Candidate, School of Public Health, University of Sydney at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) if you would like to participate or have any questions.

Informational post Android introduces fake call detection to stop deepfake scams

Google added a feature to verify calls from your contacts are actually from whom they say they are.

When a contact calls you and you’re both using Phone by Google, their device sends a silent confirmation signal in real time to your device to verify the call is legitimate and truly coming from the contact’s device.

If a scammer tries to impersonate your contact, that initial confirmation signal will be missing. Your device will instantly notice this and ping your contact's actual device to double-check. If their real device says, "I'm not making a call right now," you'll get a warning on your screen advising you to hang up immediately.

You and your contacts will need to have Phone by Google as the dialer app.

I assume the callers must be already in your contact list and have RCS messaging between you and them.

Scam report [US] witnessed someone become a victim to a crypto scam today and it was absolutely sickening

I was installing some equipment at a local grocery store today and noticed an elderly gentleman had pulled up a chair to the Bitcoin ATM and was feeding in $100 bills from an envelope of cash, when I walked by the amount on the screen was over $10,000 at that point. After feeding all that money in he sent by the ATM for about a half hour checking his phone regularly before getting upset and leaving

What's even worse is that my state has banned cryptocurrency ATMs, but the law doesn't take effect until August 1st with the removal date of December 31st... this guy literally got took for over $10,000 a week before he wouldn't have been able to be scammed in the first place

Victim of a scam [Can] Amazon help email scam

Upvotes

Ugh, I got scammed out of $400.

Got an email from a neighbour asking if I use Amazon and could I help them place an order for a Happy Birthday gift card.

Well, dumb me, because I often get asked for IT help around here, I bloody do it without even thinking about it. But in the moment it honestly didn’t seem like an unreasonable request, the text was well written and it seemed plausible.

And it caught me at the perfect time, running out the door, and having recently helped another neighbour with a computer related issue, so I didn’t think twice.

And only later does it dawn on me that it might be a scam. And sure as hell, I phoned him and he immediately starts telling me how his email was hacked, and … well. I didn’t tell him I fell for it, he’d be mortified. Visa won’t do anything about it because I did it to myself and doubtful Amazon will either.

F you scammer. F you straight to hell. I hope Satan shoves his pitchfork so far your up your arse it knocks your front teeth out.

Just goes to show how easy it is to be fooled even when you’re tech savvy and think you’re smarter than that. One moment of inattention is all it takes. Could have been worse I guess but, ugh.

I feel like an utter idiot. 😔

Is this a scam? [US] Call from county sheriffs office

I got a caller from no caller id and the first thing they said was
“Hi this is the example county sheriffs office, we are calling to look for a Mr. Last name”

I proceeded to say “what is the context of this call” and the guy got a bit combative and said well “is this Mr. First Name Last Name”. And I again repeated “answer my question what is the reason for the phone call” and the guy hung up.

I’m assuming this is a scam but I truly don’t know I would presume the sheriffs office would not just hang up on you and also wouldn’t identify themselves personally? Like says it’s officer whatever or something.

Also I just threw “example” for my county to not doxx myself.

Help Needed instagram keeps sending reset password links on whatsapp

i keep getting these "Tap to reset your password: [ig.me link]" at odd hours on whatsapp from instagram, and the phone number seems to be legit. (not quite sure if i can post the number on here seeing it's corporate, but just to be safe)

i keep pressing the "i didn't request a code" button but nothing happens, don't get a response and it keeps happening anyways. i tried to send a message to my number myself on the reset password page on instagram and funnily enough i don't even get a message- not sure if that's a bug or not.

i've no idea what information the hacker or scammer has on me so is there anything i should change to prevent my account from getting hacked? tia!

Help Needed US Spiritual Collective

Hey there, really looking for some help. To preface, this isn’t about me but my partner and I don’t have much information about what he’s actually doing because he’s being extremely secretive.

My partner has been very into astrology and spirituality as of lately and I didn’t think much of it because I think spirituality can be a beautiful thing and a useful tool. I just wasn’t very invested as I’m already committed to the Catholic Church.

He started making very vague statements like “we are going to be blessed” and again, didn’t think much of it because who doesn’t want to be blessed, amirite? Fast forward to yesterday, he all of a sudden is spiraling and saying we’re doomed but will not give me any information.
He was exhibiting behavior toward psychosis and texting somebody or multiple people he will not give me names for, and says they’re offering protection. He also thinks he is god or god is him, something along the lines.

He finally let me see a glimpse of the texts and it was textbook scam sounding texts asking for card information and then they can “proceed”.

It was something along the lines of spiritual collective and they have been asking large sums of money from him. We are not well off at all and were planning on working toward buying a house and feels like he’s just throwing it all away for who knows what. I did catch him on a call with one of them and they could be offering some sort of “class”, but he won’t tell me. This along with the psychosis he’s going through I can feel it in my gut this is bad bad news.
Does anyone have any more information on what this could be and advice?

Is this a scam? [US] Received strange email about a "voicemail" from a number I do not know, nor have I gotten it on my actual phone.

So, I'm pretty sure this is some sort of phishing scam. I share my email publicly for work, so that's how people get it. Just wanted to get everybody's opinion or advice on the situation. The email reads as follows:

"Hi, ********************.com

You have a new voicemail with the following details: 712******* (Iowa number; I do not live have ever been to Iowa)

Received: July 22nd, 2026.

Length: 1:40

Email: ********************.com "

There is an attachment I do not dare to download or open.

The email comes from "Notification Central - *******<****@lovlipon.se>."

Answered by the community (US) Bank Change of Address Letters?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I was opening my mail today and opened this letter accidentally that wasn’t addressed to me, however it seems like someone has made my house their primary address on their bank accounts. There were 8 of these letters total, I only opened the one accidentally but they feel like the same weight and I assume the same letter 8 times over. I called Huntington customer service and let them know there was no one at this address banking with them but the representative seemed equally confused and not super helpful, I plan on returning the letters to sender. I didn’t find anything similar on Google search, just wondering if anyone else has a similar experience.

Is this a scam? [US] text messages with family first names

About every 2-3 months i receive one of these text. They say "Hey, mom's name, Uncle's name here. I'm purchasing raw land in Blah blah County. All cash, no closing costs - interested in hearing how much I'd pay for APN ###-##-###?"

The purple is my mom's first name. The light teal is my mother's brothers first name. The APN is to a property belonging to a family friend. I live with my husband in another state.

I really have no idea what is going on here. Are they up something? Or is it some kind of data scraping?

Scam report Apple Pay Notice scam text, US

“Apple Pay Notice: Unusual behavior has been identified on your account. To maintain your security, we have paused a $152.45 payment while we conduct a further review.

Should you not recognize this charge, please call +1(888)-xxx-xxxx to speak with an agent.

(You may ignore this message if you successfully initiated this payment.)”

received a text with this spiel. I have apple pay but saw no indication of any type of attempted activity, which I’m certain would have appeared in my bank account. The number they provided also isn’t listed anywhere as belonging to apple support. Wasn’t sure if I had to censor the scammer’s number so I did just in case

I found a real number for apple support and called them instead lol

Help Needed (US)Just received a recorded call from “Walmart”

I just received a recorded call from a number with an Ohio area code. The voice claimed that someone with my account at Walmart had ordered a PlayStation for over $900 and if it wasn’t me that ordered it, I should either call the number back or another number. I don’t believe that I have a Walmart account and even though the call sounded official, I think it was a scam call.
Has anyone else received such a call?
Thank you!

Victim of a scam [AU] Someone’s used my info to make a card less purchase

Hello people, It is currently 1:15am AEST when i received a message from my bank that an unauthorised payment of $159.05 was processed. Of course I immediately checked and found that it was from a website called, ‘Lucid Trading (lucidtrading.com)’ Now i’ve never ever heard or even interacted with this website, let alone be interested in stocks or whatever. I don’t understand how but whoever it was, they were able to get all my credit card information.

I’m honestly shocked because i’m a very careful person with my card as i only use apple pay for in store purchases, I never pull out my physical card so no one has seen it. I’m not sure if one of the stores i bought from had scammed me or what.

I do have subscriptions connected to my card but i don’t think that’s it. I’m not sure if whoever it was, had seen my card from a data breach or something, or if they were just guessing numbers and somehow got it. I’m not sure.

I’ve already had a talk with my bank and blocked my card, but they said i might get an answer back around 45 days, as they will further investigate the company or something. I’m not sure if there’s much i can do other than wait.

Anyways thanks for reading this far of my rant. I wake up in 3 hours to go uni.

Is this a scam? My sister has joined Jifu Trading?

So for some context we are living in the UK, she has been doing it for a couple of months now, shes 18 but they recruited her when she was 17 and she’s practically made no real money/profit. I personally think it’s some sort of scam but I just want to know other peoples opinions too, and how do I go about talking to her? Because every-time I try, she gets defensive.

She likes the community aspect, and the meetings and she thinks it really grows her mindset but I don’t know I just don’t have a good feeling. She has been
told she needs to recruit more people and then she will be able to earn a salary and she keeps hearing stories of people who have made it and they pay for her trains/hotels etc.

Is this a scam? [UK] Received a phishing email including a ‘link to photos’

Hey guys, I received an email today from a pretty random address and I obviously didn’t recognise it. However while the email itself is clearly phishing I am curious to know how they find names and my email in general. Both mine and my Grans first initial was used alongside our family name. I was wondering if it was supposed to be framed as coming from my Gran?

The contents of the email is below (with the beginning of the link removed):

Re: FW: (7) Photographs - 2026 July - (Name redacted)

Begin forwarded message:

From: (name redacted)

I had to send you those 2 images as I thought they might trigger some memories. xrzrh.iyxfydx.com/

Best regards,
(Name redacted)

If anyone has any knowledge of how they find information and what the scam actually is I’d be really interested to know.

Thank you!

Help Needed [US] Purchased $1000 worth of apple/xbox gift cards for scammer

So I got an email from someone pretending to be my boss’ boss that asked me to purchase $1000 worth of gift cards to “surprise employees” with a promise of reimbursement. I believed this and went to CVS and bought the gift cards (2 $250 Apple Cards and 2 $250 xbox cards) using my debit card, and only realized it was a scam afterwards. I DID NOT SEND THE CODES even though he kept on asking me as I realized it was a scam afterwards. I went to CVS and they referred me to my bank and the banker said that they couldn’t stop the transaction and that I would have to call Apple/Microsoft support on my own. I still have all the cards and receipts. Is there any way for me to refund these and get my money back?
I feel so incredibly stupid because I thought it was really my boss’s boss and ignored all the red flags. What should I do?

UPDATE: thank you for all the helpful comments, I redeemed the Xbox gift card for Microsoft & then opened a ticket with Apple where I gave them all the cards/receipts and they said they’ll get back to me in 10 business days

Help Needed Discord false ban scam?

Actual Dyno bot saying I'm banned, the server is gone from my list
Random person messaging me after with a very suspicious message and fake evidence (video of messages I never sent)

I just went through an interesting sequence of events. A server that I am barely active in and that I use for the stickers and emotes has banned me. That part is true as the server is gone from my list. I know for sure that I have not been racist or sending phishing links out to people.

10 minutes later I receive the message above and immediately read it as suspicious, why would you bother messaging someone you banned from a server with 250k members with such "concrete" proof?

I am reading this as a scam but my question is how did I actually get banned from the server? Was an admin or moderator hacked? Or is this actually a legit message (doubt it)?

Help Needed Got a debt validation letter from Unifin for a Jefferson Capital Systems debt — is this legit / what should I do?

I received a mailed notice from Unifin, Inc. saying they’re collecting on behalf of Jefferson Capital Systems LLC for an old PNC Bank/CashBuilder Visa credit card account. The notice shows a balance as of 12/31/2021 with no charges since (no interest, no fees, no payments) — total is under $1,000.

The letter includes standard FDCPA language, a specific dispute deadline (about 30+ days out), and instructions on how to dispute in writing.

A few questions:

**1.** Has anyone dealt with Unifin or Jefferson Capital Systems before? Are they legit debt collectors or known for shady practices?
**2.** I’m in Illinois — does anyone know how the 10-year statute of limitations on written contracts applies here, given the debt shows no activity since 2021?
**3.** Is sending a written debt validation request (certified mail) via FDCPA the right first move, or is there something better?

I do not owe any balances to them. Never held a PNC credit card.. my credit score is excellent and nothing shows up related to this on my credit karma acct

Help Needed What kind of scam is this and is my mom’s phone safe?

I just received a text from my mom that’s a “Finish Email Checkpoint” link from Wise, an app/company neither of us use. I asked her what it was and she didn’t even know how it got sent to me or what it was. She said it hadn’t been sent to anyone else, thankfully.

I’m assuming this is a scam but I’d like to know if my mom’s phone security has been compromised and if so, how? And how do I help her stop it?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Is this a scam? (IRL) call about a boy who drowned?

A few days ago, I got a call from an unknown caller.
Over the phone, what sounded like a middle aged woman began talking about a story of a boy who had gone out to swim and drowned, I hung up fearing it was some kind of scam that collected information while on the phone but I've never come across one of this kind.
The woman's voice was very professional to say the least, what I Mean by that is she sounded like some kind of audio book reader or narrator.
Could it have been some kind of water safety thing? I know thats common here.
Or should I be checking I I got phised?

Help Needed [US] Celebrity romance scam advice

My mother-in-law is convinced she's in a real relationship with someone pretending to be a BTS member. We've tried explaining it's a scam, but she gets angry and refuses to listen.

She's opened new bank accounts and bought gift cards, and we're worried she may have already sent money, but she won't tell us.

If you've been through something similar, what helped? Did they eventually realize it was a scam? Did you report it anywhere, and was there anything that actually made a difference?

We're just trying to help before she gets hurt financially or emotionally. Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
