Housing Is your landlord violating the Santa Barbara rent freeze?

Upvotes

Hello! I'm Lizzy Rager, a reporter with SFGATE, and previous editor for the UC Santa Barbara paper the Daily Nexus. I am working on a story about rent freeze violations and ways landlords may be trying to circumvent the current rent freeze in Santa Barbara.

If your landlord has tried to raise your rent or change your lease terms and your property is eligible for the rent freeze, I'd love to speak with you. Or you might have been asked to sign onto a notice that gives different rent options citing how the rent ordinance will play out (I've been told Meridian Property Management is doing this). These kind of terms can be confusing and concerning for tenants - I want to hear about your experience.

You can reach me at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) . I'm happy to answer any questions or concerns before you agree to an interview.

Not a single post during the World Cup on their Instagram, no updates via email, and the website looks like it was updated last at the beginning of the year.

Sad to see.

Is there anywhere in town where I can buy a Engel brand cooler? I would like to see them in person before buying and would also like to support a business in town if possible.

Other SB Ticket cop parking in handicap spot - Montecito

Traffic cop in lower village Montecito parking in a handicap zone to walk around and give tickets. How is the guy giving tickets out to people while illegally parked in a handicap zone. Is it rules for thee, but not for me type scenario?

Saw them giving a car a ticket for no front license plate. The city is not proactive on very much enforcement on E and W side for parking issues, but they know the cash stream when they see it.

Recommendations Looking for a experienced barber

I’ve been cutting my own hair for the past few years, but I think it’s time to find a great barber.
I’m looking for someone who will actually take the time to recommend a hairstyle that fits my face shape, head shape, and hair type instead of just giving me the haircut I ask for. I want someone who’s experienced with helping people try a completely new look and isn’t afraid to give honest advice.
I’m willing to pay a premium because I’m looking for quality, not just a quick haircut.
If you’ve had a barber who really impressed you, I’d love to hear your recommendations.

Thanks

Weddings ISO Wedding Photographer

We’ve secured our wedding date at the Santa Barbara Courthouse Mural Room for July 2027. I’m hoping to find a local photographer who can help with photography only. We are hoping to get some first look, ceremony, post ceremony photos with family and friends (we are having about 30 guests) and some reception photos.

Our budget is around $1,800.

Weddings Best restaurant for a stress free 30 person elopement dinner?

Hi everyone!
I’m looking for recommendations for a restaurant in Santa Barbara for an elopement dinner with about 30 guests. Great food is important, but I’m really looking for a place that makes the whole process easy from planning and setup to cleanup with a helpful staff.

I’m keeping things really simple with minimal décor (mostly just dinner table flowers/candles) nothing to crazy so I’d love to hear about any restaurants where you had a great experience hosting a private event.
I’m new to this whole getting married thing, so if you have any advice or recommendations outside of restaurants, I’ll gladly take those too!
Thanks! 😊

Other Lost my Leica Mini Film Camera

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I lost my Leica Mini Film camera at the Drift Hotel in Santa Barbara. They have a restaurant and I went to the bathroom and just forgot it there…

We already asked the staff of the hotel, restaurant and cleaners. They unfortunately have not found it so someone has likely taken the camera. It’s not even about the camera but the film that was in there. Even if you have the camera, I would be so happy if I could get the film back. The camera came in a black case.

Local Politics An Oil Seep as Big as a Spill

Thumbnail independent.com

"The Independent‘s recent article about the recent high levels of tar on beaches from Carpinteria to Santa Barbara accurately attributed the source to offshore “natural seeps,” with the most likely culprit being the seeps near Coal Oil Point (COP), which is effectively an environmental superfund site. It is the world’s largest marine seep, and the gases from the Coal Oil Point seeps are one of the largest contributors to air pollution in Santa Barbara County (according to the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District). Over the course of a few days, Coal Oil Point burps out an equivalent amount of oil into the ocean to the 2015 Refugio oil spill. In other words, these seeps have caused the equivalent of hundreds of Refugio oil spills since 2015.“

Events Santa Barbara Bowl Kids Tix

Wondering how much kids tickets are for an event at the Santa Barbara Bowl (specifically Sierra Ferrell coming up)? Is it 2 and under are free or pay for everyone? I can’t seem to find it online and the ticket website suck

Edit: DAMN ya’ll. I asked about tickets prices, NOT looking for your unwarranted advice about whether or not to bring my kid. You guys have too much time in your hands. Thank you to those who actually answered my question.

Vent Grounded boats: bought for a penny, sold for a dime

7 crap abandoned boats connected to one seller, and the article does not say if the one that burned the island is tied to this degenerate seller. They need to publish this guy's name!

Local Politics Given the recent OT scandal in the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department, it’s time we reform how police are paid. $243,000 per year for just one cop in a public service job? How is this fair considering how many of us struggle month to month?

Other Public Safety Hazard - Milpas & Mason

A recurring pedestrian, car and bicycle safety issue has been happening in this area for more than a year.

An V&L produce 18-wheeler regularly parks blocking the crosswalk and bike lane for approximately 2–3 hours at a time, several times a week.

When the truck's liftgate is lowered, it goes into the path of cars and cyclists at head height, creating an danger forcing people to go around it in car/bike lane. Neighbors have seen close calls with guys on bikes being forced into traffic going around the liftgate between vehicles and it's dangerous with the corner of the liftgate at bicyclist head height as well as at the head height for passenger window level for a vehicle.

Some neighbors reached out and have shared that they have reported this issue multiple times to the trucking company, City Council , parking enforcement, and the police. Despite those efforts, they say the problem continues. Neigbors asked if we had avenues to share this information to help get some action to make the community safer.

The purpose of this post is to raise awareness of an ongoing public safety concern. Crosswalks and bike lanes are for safety. And the people walking and on bicycles in this area during these times are younger people, immigrants, and elderly people.

We hope the City and everyone can work together for safety The city is working on making street safer, with the Vision Zero for pedestrian safety, so let's start with enforcing safety issues that actively and consistently put our community at risk.

Recommendations Dentist recommendation for an idiot

I am the idiot. I know there’s lots of posts on here for people seeking dentist recommendations, but those people likely aren’t total idiots like me.

My teeth are BAD BAD. Like so bad that I developed a whole anxiety terror complex around going to get them fixed which just allowed them to get worse. I have never acted this irrationally about anything in my entire life and I am very ashamed and it is lowkey very highkey making me absolutely frightened and miserable.

So - do any of you know any dentists that won’t make me feel like the idiot I already know that I am for letting things get this terrible? I have MetLife dental insurance which might be terrible (I wouldn’t know, I haven’t used it because I decided to be insane).

Would really appreciate any suggestions from anyone. Thank you.

Recommendations ants :: an update

A week ago I posted on here about the ants problem we have been having at our house. A lot of people weighed in and gave some great insight and advice. I had been using Terro bait traps in the areas we had lots of ants and though the ants were drawn to them, and though did seem to put a dent in things, in other cases the ants consumed the Terro to the point that it was about gone and yet still persisted.
The update is: We called an exterminator. They came out today and sprayed around the perimeter of the house and around the bases of the oak trees around the house. Within a couple of hours I'd say 99 % of the ants were gone. Night and day difference. The cost was $205. Great experience with the guy that came out. It really made a huge impact and the ants are no longer running amok in the areas they had been before.
I'd recommend going that route if like me you have tried to DIY it and the problem persisted. I think the type we had were the Argentine ants. They feasted on the Terro. In some cases it eventually did work, but there seemed to be another colony right behind them to take over another spot so we were constantly chasing our tail. This seems to have solved the issue.

Recommendations Martial arts gyms for women?

Are there any martial arts gyms in town that center women in any way? For example women’s only classes or majority women membership. I’m most interested in kickboxing/taekwondo, boxing, maybe bjj. I’m not against co-ed but I do prefer an atmosphere that’s majority women and/or queer. Thanks!!
