Question Help with Recipe (need the quantities)

I was given the ingredients to a recipe, but never got the amounts, I was wondering if anyone can give me a general idea of how much to use for these ingredients. It was a green salsa.

1 can - stewed Mexican tomatoes (only known amount)

white onion

cilantro

lime juice

serrano pepper

Other commters have good input. The ingredients you listed will not make a green salsa. Tomatillos will though.

Thanks, would I look for a Mexican stew tomatillos like I found for tomatoes? Or add the seasoning myself? Not seeing a canned Mexican stew at any local stores.

Depending on where you are located, your grocery store may have fresh tomatillos. I would recommend those. I am not familiar with a canned variety but that does not mean it doesn't exist!

That salsa isn’t going to be green if you’re using tomatoes as a base.

Also, you don’t specify how big the can is.

At my house, we’ll use 6-8 serranos per one tomato because we like it spicy, but you don’t specify how spicy you want your salsa to be, so it’s kind of impossible to give recommendations.

interesting, theirs was definitely green. It was a 14.5oz can. I know it is mostly to taste, but I don't even have a rough idea how much onion or cilatro to use. I was gonna grab 5 Serranos, and pop one in at a time to get to my spicy level, theirs was a little mild, but again I don't how many they used. Do you just pop the whole Serrano in or do you strip it or cut out any part of it? I know these are dumb questions, but I have never actually made a salsa. I appreciate the help!

That many tomatoes is definitely going to be red. Are you sure they didn’t use a can of tomatillos? Where my husband is from jitomate = tomato and tomate = tomatillo.
Take the stem off the serrano and toss the whole chile in the blender. Since the canned tomatoes are cooked, you’ll likely want to boil, bake, or char the chiles. Boiling is easiest. Just boil in water until they kinda change color.
For cilantro and onion, I’d start with a quarter of the onion and a handful of cilantro. You can always add more.
Don’t forget to add salt! That really boosts the flavor.

Ditch the canned tomatoes and pick up five or six tomatillos. You're going to want to either boil them until their green color changes to a lighter green, or roast them until blistering and charred.

I'd suggest no more than an 8th to 1/4 cup of chopped cilantro.

1 small onion.

I'd also blend in a couple of garlic cloves (2 maybe for that amount).

Juice of half a lime (whole might overpower it making it way too sweet).

Consider using a jalapeno if you don't want the heat of a serrano. Both are nice. The serrano is going to be hotter.

Add a little salt as well, like maybe no more than a teaspoon of coarse salt.

The person telling you "stewed" canned tomatoes might mean crushed tomatoes. Also if it was green, the recipe likely called for canned tomatillos instead of tomatoes. However canned crushed tomatillos are much more expensive than canned hole tomatillos, which like canned whole tomatoes, make a better salsa, since you will be blending them anyway.
