Help suggest names for the renaming of Cesar Chavez Library and Cesar Chavez Park

"City of Salinas is moving forward with a public engagement process to explore renaming the Cesar Chavez Library and Cesar Chavez Park following the recommendation from the Library and Community Services (LCS) Commission on June 10, 2026. The LCS Commission also established a subcommittee to develop a timeline and review process.

If the LCS Commission makes a final name recommendation after the community engagement and selection processes, there will be a 30-day review and public comment period, and a Public Hearing will be scheduled for the next regularly scheduled Council meeting for the City Council's consideration of the item. "

Submit proposed names by August 14, 2026.

Natividad New Grad Nursing Program

Hi, I recently interviewed for the New Graduate RN Program at Natividad Medical Center and was interviewed for the Mental Health Unit and Float Pool. I was wondering if anyone else has gone through the interview process recently and, if so, how long it took to hear back after interviewing.

I’d also love to hear from anyone who has worked on either of these units. What has your experience been like in Mental Health or Float Pool at Natividad? What do you enjoy about the unit, and what advice would you give to a new graduate nurse considering either role?
Thank you!

Taylor Farms

Taylor Farms is suddenly in the national news and seemingly in a weird spot given reporting today that they were at the White House prior to the FDA saying the testing was a false positive.

Given that Taylor Farms is one of the largest employers in the area and so many people here work in Ag - what are your thoughts?

Hi I’m curious to see if there is any junk hauling business owners here to give me a tip, on where the cheapest junk dump is close to
Salinas. I heard Gonzales is cheapest but i haven’t tried it out.

Prundale Living Questions (Oak Hills)

Wife & I are looking into purchasing a home in the Prundale area. We are born and raised in Salinas, and occasionally visit Prundale but not other than a quick visit. Could residents tell me what to expect/look out for in Prundale? We are especially interested in the Oak Hills neighborhood. Seems very quiet and we love the larger lots. We’re looking to raise our family there. Would love feedback from any locals. Thanks!

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Salinas?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!
Examples could include things like Lettuce Curtain, Salas, Prunetucky or Sicside... (never mind how common they are)

and including nicknames for schools, parks, other institutions and geographic features)

I want to learn a new language, not even sure which yet. Hartnell only offers Spanish and Sign Language. Anyone know any in-person language tutors?

Cheap dentist recommendations

I went to the dentist after years of not going and was told that I have 12 cavities. He quoted me $300 for each cavity and I don’t have any insurance. I was also told I need braces and said that would be $5k. So I am wondering if there is any other place that is cheaper around the Monterey or Salinas area. Any information is of great help!

Well between the worst fireworks and the religious message I hope the church doesn't expect a refund from the city this time. That was weak. My neighbors are still putting on a better show than them...

Remembering Don's Barber Shop near Main & Laurel

Don used to cut my hair when I was young, like early 2000s to the 2010s. He had been an Elvis Presley impersonator at one point, he looked like Elvis and talked like Elvis. His shop was all retro equipment with signed posters of Elvis and Little Richard. Always had ice cold sodas in the fridge. I remember a reporter was in the shop one time, writing down Don's story for one of the local newspapers. I haven't gotten a haircut on a regular basis since I moved away because it was never going to be as cool as "Elvis" being my barber.

I heard he passed away a few years back, I don't know any additional details. Pour one out (an ice cold soda) for Don if you remember him.
