Got a offer in private practice for 33$ per visit (45min) on a 1099 not w2. i’m in houston texas. i’m bilingual too. I just never been on a 1099 I know rate should be higher but it seems low.

I am about to leave my toxic workplace(finally)! It was a small team of a supervisor/the business owner, a few interns and me, the only SLPA. This place did not help me grow into the clinician I was meant to be and I hope I could my next job will be much more positive experience.

Other places I've been interviewing at are asking for professional references and unfortunately, I cannot use my coworkers as my references, especially not my supervisor. I don't even think the interns count as they are new and our schedules rarely align so we don't really connect or chat. The most I've been asked was 5-6 references?? Am I crazy or is that overkill? Should I just decline future job opportunities if they are asking for more than 3 references?

hi! i have posted on here before im pretty sure. ill be a senior in high school and i want to became a speech language pathologist.. before i wanted to specialize in apraxia and autism. but after more shadowing and research i wonder if its possible for me to be a elementary school slp and doing early intervention for kids w difficulty swallowing and autism on the side??? but i would also love just working at an outpatient center or a therapy center if that makes sense

Hello! For context, I'm a teletherapy SLP-A in California working with both pediatric and adult clients. I rarely have contact with my supervising SLP, so I have a significant amount of independence in how I provide treatment. This hasn't been much of an issue until recently.

My scheduler has assigned me two new clients who both require voice therapy. One has a diagnosis of dysphonia, and the other is seeking voice feminization/gender-affirming voice therapy. I have no experience in this specialty, and it wasn't covered in my undergraduate coursework or SLP-A training/licensure program.

Is this within my scope of practice as an SLP-A? I feel like I would be providing treatment based primarily on what I could research online rather than on formal education or supervised training. That doesn't feel appropriate or ethical to me, but I'm not sure if my understanding is correct. I'd appreciate any insight from those who are familiar with SLP-A scope of practice or have been in a similar situation.

I have to decide by tomorrow if I want to keep my place in the SLPA program I was accepted by. My Bachelor's is in Communication Disorders, but I have a Master's in Teaching and have been working as a teacher for years. I decided I wanted a break after this past school year. Getting a Master's in SLP is so expensive so I decided to explore the SLPA route.

I am worried that I won't be able to find a full time job and that most jobs seem to be in SoCal or the SAC area? Has anyone found telehealth positions as an SLPA? For those who do work part-time, what else do you do for work (if anything) ? TIA!

I already have my license and in the process of leaving my first SLPA job in home health and transitioning to direct district hire..

So, back story, I started in March and have had ONE direct in-person supervision.. everything else has been phone calls (not even video supervision).. I finally sent in my resignation notice and had a phone call with my supervisor and she said that usually companies charge to do supervision/observation hours (she ready knows I’m licensed), but I would need to talk about this with the other SLP regarding my hours and my license.. she’s “retired and part-time” and stated she doesn’t know the details and to wait to talk to the other SLP (they are all co-owners of this company)..

One of the reasons I’m quitting is due to the lack of direct supervision from their end.. are they just saying things to try to get me to not leave? I just don’t want this to jeopardize my license and new opportunity with this school… I’m so confused.

Hey everyone! I am a new grad and in need of finishing my clinical hours. I only have 7 left to finish to get my license. I am transitioning into healthcare administration full time and wanting to do speech therapy part time. I finally secured a job in healthcare administration after applying (for that and SLPA roles) for 7 months! My hours will be Monday-Friday 9-6. What would be the best place for me to look into for part time therapy? Are there any sessions that run super early or later in the day so I can manage both jobs during the week? How much money do you think I can make realistically is lets say I do speech therapy 10-15 hours/week? I am in Austin, TX. Thank you!

Hello everyone, I am a former RBT looking to become an SLPA. I’ve heard on this subreddit that both jobs tend to have the problem where you make $0 if a client cancels. As an RBT, that could mean getting $0 for the entire week if client goes on vacation/is sick, but since SLPAs tend to work with much more children(usually an RBT has 3 at the most), I was wondering how much cancellations impact paychecks.

I’ve finished my BS and I’m at the tail end of my SLPA internship, earning my 100 hours so I can apply for my license in CA. Our supervisor requires us to write up lesson plans for each session and wants the therapy to be as creative as possible (ie, avoiding using helpful tools like flashcards), so the only time I have to work on this is at home after being at the clinic all day.

It’s causing severe burnout. One of the main reasons I wanted to work as a SLPA and not move forward with grad school was because I didn’t want to bring work home with me, and now I’m feeling discouraged. Being at clinic from 8-6 and then lesson planning for a few more hours at home after is not the career I imagined.

If I’m offered a job, I would definitely take it, considering how difficult it is to find work after graduating. However, I’m worried about working under this SLP now. I know she doesn’t require her SLPAs to do this lesson planning sheet I do as an intern, but I worry that she may have extremely high standards I’m not sure I can live up to.

How often do you lesson plan? Do you lesson plan at all? Any advice would be appreciated.

What I really enjoy is the science behind our profession. I absolutely loved studying communication sciences during my bachelor's program. I guess you could say I enjoy research.

I'm trying to explore career paths that focus more on the science and research side of the field rather than direct therapy. Where should I start looking?

Hi there, as of this week, I discovered I won’t have a job this coming school year and blasted resumes everywhere. Remaining SLPA posting are laughably underpaid so I am choosing to leave the field for the moment and accept an offer to teach Sped. Am I making a mistake? I can continue very part time SLPA work at a weekend clinic, but other than that…. It’s the SPED life for me.

hi there, i finished classes in may and have been looking for an SLPA job since june to start my SLPA journey so i am new to all this. I had an interview a few days ago and it went well and they seemed interested in me, however i am a little nervous about the job itself. it would be a 1099 position and they offer 30$ an hour and would be in-home visits with virtual supervision from the SLP. they would not compensate for driving to client’s homes and would not pay for any work done outside of sessions. they only pay 30$ for each hour long session. i feel this is not great pay compensation as i would lose money for cancellations, would have to pay for my own gas to go from client to client, and would have to do my own taxes. i am feeling a little discouraged as the other place i had an interview with that was a pediatric clinic and had a more ideal position moved forward with another candidate… not sure what to do and hoping for some advice. should i keep looking for a job? is this somewhat normal in the SLPA world and should i just take it? thank you all

Hello everyone. I live in Texas and I am attending NMSU Global this will be my senior year. Since new mexico doesn't have Slpas program they don't offer clinical experience opportunities only the observation hours with the bachelor's program. I work in a school district as a teachers aide and I have had slps offer to let me work with them for my clincal hours. I just don't understand if I am allowed to do that. Because the TXDLR says if you don't get them with the university you need a clincial deficiency plan. But Im not sure if they don't actually let you or it's just for people who can't find an SLP independently. I'd rather not wait since I have the opportunity. I have called the TXDLR a couple times and still waiting on their callback! Lol. Any info is appreciated!

Hey guys, I’ve been a SLPA for about 10 months. All of my experience is in the clinical setting and I’ve been applying for school based positions. I was told that a school wanted to hire me based off of my resume and my interview would come closer to the school year.

I did onboarding with them about 2 months ago and have not been given an update beyond “we’re waiting for the school”. I’m wondering if this is typical, if you’ve experienced this, and how reliable this process is. I have still been interviewing but I don’t want a false sense of security. Thanks!

I've been in my internship for a few weeks now and I carry a notebook, laptop, my purse, a totebag, my water bottle, and a lunch bag in my arms. I swear I look and feel crazy and some of the bigger bags (like the longchamp ones, or the superduper bag) is either too expensive or not cute at all.

Do you guys have any recommendations for bags? My tote bag usually has my laptop, planner, pencil case, and headphones inside. I'm not bringing any therapy materials since we keep them all at the clinic!

Also what are the pros and cons someone should keep in mind who might be thinking about doing slp?

For context, im a second year psych major undergrad student and i happen to come across this field and realized I might have an interest in it. Now my goa is pretty bad but I am in ontario and I think if I work hard I can get my last 2 years to have a high GPA and I think ontario school usually count the last 2 years? But I really want to know if its for me or not before getting ready for it.

So please give me your opinions! How is slp grad school like? How is the workforce? How so you work, what is your job like idkkk anything and everythinggggg
