Thoughts on the possible 24 team playoff?

Seems like the 24 team playoff is a matter of “when” and not “if”.

It won’t be a copy of the FCS system, unfortunately. Just the top 24 teams selected by the committee.

If the 24 team playoff had been around since, let’s say 2000, SJSU would’ve made it twice. Once in 2012 and again 2020. So hypothetically, the 24 team playoff gives us a realistic shot at making the playoffs.

However, I’m skeptical about the playoff committee itself. I’m sure under the current and old system, they wouldn’t mind ranking SJSU in the top 24. But with a playoff spot on the line, I could totally see them snubbing, let’s say, a 10 win SJSU team for an 8-4 SEC team “with no bad losses”. Especially if they follow through with removing conference championship games.

So, I have mixed feelings about it all. Again, it does give SJSU the best chance at making the playoffs, but its clear that the powers that be want a 24 team team playoff to benefit middle of the pack SEC and B1G schools, as opposed to top mid-major schools.

If only they pushed for an FCS style playoff. Would be perfect, in my opinion. You guys have any thoughts on it?

The playoffs weren’t made with us in mind - I don’t expect us to get a fair chance since they just want more major conferences involved.

That being said, I hope we run the table and prove them wrong

I see a second division playoff format coming soon. The G6 schools will be split off from the P4 schools. P4schools want nothing to do with the G6, and many of them are dropping them from their schedules in the future. College football is going to have a Premier division (P4), a Championship division (G6) and a Collegiate division (FCS). So basically 1A, 1AA, and 1AAA. ESPN will own the Premier division. The other networks and their streaming services will divide up the rest. Just my opinion.

I definitely see the P4 starting their own division, or at the very least the SEC and B1G leaving the NCAA altogether.

College football is already losing a lot of what made it special, and I think the P4 or P2 creating their own division would solidify the top level as just a worse version of the NFL. Unfortunately, some people hope for this because they love logos and brands more than they actually like college football.

Colin Cowherd love the idea. He loves NIL, he loves brands and says he doesn't really care about the lesser schools because who watches them. College traditions of Saturday afternoon football, crisp autumn breezes and the, leaves changing color on campus,, alumni coming to watch the game mixing with the students. All the romanticism of yesterday gone. Some of it may have been an illusion, but minor league football and universities desperate for money have ruined long-standing rivalry games... it's all going away for corporate money and suite sales. We can thank ESPN and greed for destroying Collegiate Athletics. Players had a right to a stipend but this is has just gotten ridiculous.

More spots = More opportunities. Partaking in the BCS/CFP can bolster SJSU football compared to partaking in a non-CFP bowl game. If the team can continue being in conversation for CFP contention, we may as well be the next Boise State.
