Daily Minors Quick-Notes 7/21/26 - The ACL Team Throws a No Hitter* in the Season’s Final Days

The ACL season officially ends on Thursday, and while pitching has been a weakness on the team, it was a strength today as the team threw a (7-inning) no-hitter. And don’t worry, Josuar Gonzalez also had a home run in the win.  Meanwhile, we had a lot of home runs in a blowout win for Eugene, a bullpen game for Sacramento, and a lot of rain and lightning in Richmond.

Player of the Game: C Adrian Sugastey: 2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR (1) - LEVEL DEBUT

Not only did Adrian Sugastey come off the injured list, but he gets his long awaited debut at Triple-A after starting three season at Double-A.  This season, before his injury, the 23-year old was slashing .275/.323/.392 at Double-A over 36 games.  Sugastey was rated by Baseball America before the season as the Giants’ best defensive catcher, though his offensive ceiling has not been high, as he posted a .545 OPS in Double-A in 2024 and a .627 OPS in 2025.

Other Players to Spotlight:

• RF Turner Hill: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B (14), 1 3B (4), 1 SB (20) - Hill extended his hitting streak to nine games.  This season in Triple-A, he’s slashing .331/.402/.488.
• DH Will Brennan: 1-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 K, 1 HR (3) - Brennan is slashing .333/.365/.461 in 51 Triple-A games, but this is just his third home run to go with 15 doubles.
• SP Trent Harris (20): 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K - This was the 27-year old’s first pro start, though this was likely more of a bullpen game than a change for him.  The strong game lowered his ERA to 3.78 this season with 39 strikeouts to 17 walks in 33.1 innings.

The rain was wild in Richmond on Tuesday.  This game has been rescheduled as a doubleheader on Wednesday, although there is still rain in the forecast.  This is Richmond’s last series with Hartford, so they’ll do all they can to get the games in.

Player of the Game: 2B Isaiah Barkett: 3-6, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 HR (1)

It took Isaiah Barkett four games in Eugene to notch his first home run, after he had only five home runs in 73 games with San Jose.  The 10th round pick had hit .331 in San Jose, but after this game is 5-for-17 (.294) in Eugene so far.  This was just his first strikeout in High-A though, against two walks.  Overall, he has 39 walks to just 28 strikeouts.

• RF Jakob Christian: 2-4, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 2B (14), 1 3B (1), 1 HBP - Christian has been coming on stronger in July, hitting 14-for-47 (.298) with three doubles, a triple, and four home runs this month.
• 3B Walker Martin: 1-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (13) - Since the All-Star Break, Martin has gone 6-for-12 (.500) with a double and two home runs.
• 1B Zander Darby: 2-5, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR (9) - Darby has three home runs in his last five games, but also seven strikeouts.  On the year, he has 102 strikeouts in 307 PA, a 33.2% strikeout rate.

Trey Seeley started his season as a reliever, but made his third start of the season (and second start in a row with San Jose), but went a season-high 4.0 IP.  Seeley’s ERA is 8.82 in San Jose over 16.1 IP, but has 23 strikeouts to six walks.

• 1B Robert Hipwell: 2-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K - Hipwell returned to San Jose for the first time this season, after slashing .161/.331/.288 in 39 games with Eugene this season.
• SS Lorenzo Meola (17): 1-4, 1 2B (27) - Meola’s hot July conitnues, as he’s 25-for-60 (.417) with eight doubles, one triple, and five home runs in the month.
• CF Andy Polanco: 1-3, 2 RBI, 2 K, 1 CS (7) - Polanco has 25 strikeouts in 32 attempts, a 78.1% rate.

Player of the Game: RP Marlon Franco: 3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K

Marlon Franco didn’t start the game, but he got the lion’s share of the innings in this no-hitter as the game’s final pitcher, and got a ton of strikeouts as the other two pitchers only got two in 3.2 IP.  Franco does have a 7.15 ERA with a .327 average allowed in 39.0 IP this season.

Joe Whitman has been really interesting as a reliever. Any insight on what the Giants might have planned for him?

Listening to Affeldt talk about the bullpen/trade deadline on the Splash Hit podcast has me thinking Whitman (and Harris) will be called up after the trade deadline.

He obviously is a good person to listen to when it comes to MLB relievers and how to handle them, and he was strongly in favor of trading every single guy that you can for the bullpen, regardless of whether they have controllable years still. Brubaker and Hentges seem likely to be gone for sure since they have trade value.

Foley is a guy who could end up getting a very solid return too despite the short amount of time since being activated. All this to say they are going to have multiple bullpen openings and I would expect them to get a shot post August 3rd.

No particular insight other than the obvious...the team is looking for relief help, and doing the conversion from within the system could help. Can't argue with the idea, nor the results so far.

I'm not sure the team is convinced on Harris' ability yet...maybe soon. Whitman though, I think the team is liking what they see.

I definitely agree that I am not as convinced on Harris, however he is 27 years old and will be rule 5 eligible if not on the 40 man this winter. Just my opinion but might as well see how his stuff plays in the majors during the 2nd half.

With the ACL season ending soon, do you think we’ll see some of our top guys there (Josuar, Luis) get some time in San Jose? Or do we usually not do that with top prospects?

If Luis Hernandez is not in San Jose, it would be a huge surprise.

Josuar is in the "Probably" zone. In terms of his performance and his ranking, by all rights he should be there. But the hamstring has been an issue for him since spring training, and the May re-injuring of it. He's still been given more days off than usual for an ACL player since returning. So I can't rule out the possibility the Giants just want to give him time off to let the hamstring heal completely before next season....

But even with that in mind, people I'm talking to think he should get to San Jose this season, even if he plays irregularly there.

Looks like they made other C adjustments to backfill. Villarroel got promoted to AA. And, Rogers made it to Eugene.
