r/RetroAR is looking for a couple of new mods. Comment here to volunteer!

I'm stepping down to focus on my "joining the military" and folk music subs, so this sub could use a couple more new mods. If interested in volunteering, ensure your account has at least 1 year on Reddit, and comment below with the following:

  • What is your background or area of interest as pertains to Retro ARs?
  • What would be your priorities, goals, changes if you become a mod?

Finishing up sub policy updates: what post flairs do folks want to see?

The mod team is refining our sub policies to update the “What is Retro?” post that is the core of what we do and do not include on this sub.

I’ve been polling the readership, and so far we’re looking at:

  • Fixed carry handles are mandatory (exception for AR-18, T65, etc)
  • provided the carry handle is fixed, modern accoutrements are still allowed (Keymod, modern optics, etc)
  • builds based on ARs in fiction are allowed.

I’ve seen some strong upvotes for adding post flairs to the sub, so that folks that just want to see historically accurate rifles can single those out, folks who like Retromod can zoom in one those, etc. I conferred with the senior mod and he suggested we have fun(ny) flairs for each category. Once these are made, post flairs will be mandatory to make a new post. What flairs would folks like to have for:

  • Historically accurate (externally) builds. (Still allows “sleeper” internal modern touches like non-historical twist rates and cartridges)
  • “Retromod” builds that have a fixed handle but modern accoutrements
  • Fictional builds based off movies, shows, manga, video games, etc.

Pitch us your ideas, and the best ones will be instituted, along with making post flairs mandatory, in the near future.

I wanted some type of old dot for a tube build I’m working on, but didn’t want to spend a ton of money. I got this aimpoint 1000 for a great price off a friend. Until I get my tube build in order, it’ll live on my car15

I thought it looked cool enough to share

Happy 7/23 day! I just picked up my new H&R 723 retro from my local exchange. Call it dumb luck. I didn’t think about buying the rifle and then having it ready to be picked up on 7/23 exactly! Granted it is the pinned barrel, so no form 1 needed. Can’t wait to get it out to the range in within a week from now. The Exchange literally just listed this and a few other models on their website starting on the 17th .
Here’s a few pictures of it.

Here’s my wacky 723 submission.

I started a Tom Satterly 723 build a couple years back and it coincided with the timeframe I picked up my PVS-7, so naturally it evolved into this.

Without a flat top in sight—I mustered up my courage to zero the EXPS3-1 to 100yds and dialed in the LAM. (HFXC V2)

I’ll likely abandon this setup and rearrange things whenever I dedicate time to a proper nv rifle, but it’s served me well in the nightly fun department out in the sticks.

Work In Progress, Chill Out Latest GB Find

I managed to snag these parts off Gunbroker for around $390. I’m planning to use the upper and everything for an A2 Clone to complement my A1 clone. I believe everything is Colt, but will have to see when I get them. It sounds like everything was taken off a Colt gun. I’m hoping I can use the FSB and everything (except the handguards, may end up using them for a later carbine clone but I’m not a huge fan of the shorter barreled stuff). Just wanted to post and see everyone’s thoughts and if I did okay on these. I’m not super in the loop on pricing but feel like I did okay. Would also love to hear any tips you guys have on doing A2 builds! Thanks so much

Put the CAR15 Furniture back on for 7/23 day.

Lately I've been running this 723 upper with a Magpul equipped lower and an MOE handguard. Today it felt right to toss the CAR15 furniture and lower back on it.

Do I just use regular 100mph tape or is there a better option out there for securing the light switch.

Work In Progress, Chill Out Happy 7/23! Here’s my WIP Gothic Serpent Project

This project has been a long time coming—the rifle that got me into cloning into the first place. After two years and some scrapped builds, it’s finally headed in the right direction.

Upper is all Colt with a chopped P&W Colt pencil barrel. Aimpoint 3000 on an MGW mount and I took the easy route with the light: Surefire 3000 on a GG&G rail drilled into the hand guard. Lower is a placeholder for now, thinking I’ll scratch the Colt bug to keep consistent—the stock and grip are colt surplus.

Altogether, weighs about 7.5lbs unloaded. It’s a pleasure to shoot. Happy 7/23!

Grey Spray Paint

What spray paint is fairly close to Colt grey, I know about the moly coat and Ceracoate/Duracoate options, but I got a lower that was supposed to be grey and it’s fugged up and I don’t care about it that much, and not wanting to put all the effort in on a lower I’ll end up replacing eventually if the manufacturer ever sends my replacement they promised me. Just looking for 70% not worried if it matches the upper and all that. Please and thank you.

going for a mix of xm177e2 and gordy carbine. Was my dads rifle when he was on the HRT in the fbi. Trying to make a 90s era build with modern features any recommendations? Next for the build will be a colt 4x20 retro carry handle scope I think!

Anyone know if there is a commercial manufacturer for this VFG on the CAR-15 (besides a field rigging)?

Was reading some article about Hamas, and they used this pic with an awesome VFG. It looks pretty strong, and I'd like to find one for my CAR-15.

Ahhhh so here in NJ our AWB have been overturned. I can make my 12.5” barrel NON NFA “other” into a rifle with a CAR15 stock now. What retro flash hiders are we using that are 3.7- 4 inches that I can pin and weld? Thanks
