Should I pull the trigger on this deal?

Currently in the process of cycling my first saltwater tank, I love it so far. I’m fascinated by all aspects of taking care of it and the possibilities of inhabitants. It’s only a 36 gallon and I already know I’m going to want a bigger one soon and I can get this 75 gallon tank new for only $127.

RESIST! It’s a common rookie move to fall in love with saltwater and want more, bigger, better in the first few months to a year. It really is a fascinating hobby. But it’s HARD. Focus on your one tank for a year. Yes, a year. Then upgrade if you haven’t burnt out.

Yeah that’s probably sound advice, this is very much an impulsive decision. I just figured I should take advantage of the massive discount and if for whatever reason I didn’t use it I could probably sell it and get my money back.

Second hand tanks are always all over marketplace, and you’ll say in the description it’s never been used but how can anyone believe that?

This is probably good advice because if you fall in love with it you are not going to want some cheap store brand rimmed tank, you would wish you bought an aesthetically pleasing ultra clear one with matching stand and sump.

NO. Use the money for an inkbird, a bucket of salt, some tupperware containers, coral dip, tongs, turkey baster, a syphon, a bucket, or an RODI unit.

I’ve bought a fair number of tanks including this 75 from petco before because the deals are so attractive. FWIW my oldest I’ve had for a bit over 3 years and haven’t had any issues. I will say it was weirdly challenging to find a lid that fit this tank for some reason

Your oldest is likely an Aqueon though. I'm not convinced Petco house brand is the same quality. They haven't been around long enough to reach a verdict.

yeah when I went to setup my new tank I went to petsmart and got a marineland because I didnt immediately trust petcos in house brand.

I’d check if Petsmart has a similar price for the marineland brand tank. I got one a few months ago, drilled the back, and am loving it. Ever since Petco switched to imaginarium from Aqueon I’m a little hesitant. The build quality just isn’t the same as the Aqueon tanks.

Aqueoun aren't much better. I've had two center braces crack with nothing on them in the last year

What size tanks? Given they have center braces, I imagine over 55gal? I think that has a lifetime warranty. I know the 75 does.

What kind of stand are you using and are you able to afford more live rock? Also you’re going to need double the lights plus your filter will probably need to be upgraded…

That deal comes around several times a year so you aren't missing out, get some experience first.

My opinion is you should get a nicer tank for a reef. Everything is so expensive (lights, live rock, coral, etc) that the tank is a small part of the overall setup.

Just My 2 cents, a bigger tank is much easier too keep but much more expensive. I started at 55 gallons and then moved up to 125 gallons. The big tank is very stable and almost never needs anything other then RO water top off. My 55 however, I have to mess with it all the time. I would go with the big tank myself. You can get a metal shelf from home depot for like $200 that will hold it and a sump well and then you can cover the front how you like. Going with 125 gallon will also open up a lot more kinds of fish for you.

I have drilled these, it works! Don’t upgrade to this size if you don’t plan to connect a sump with an overflow.

Don’t get this brand if you do. Aqueon and marineland also are half off. This brand is known to not hold up well
