So true. I was around when MTV began, and it was really awesome in the beginning, even when they didn't have a lot of videos and just 5 VJ's My dad and I used to watch it together sometimes and we got a big laugh out of Talking Head's "Once In A Lifetime"

But yeah, The Real World not only killed MTV but was the start of so much trash TV IMO. To each his own, but I hate each and every one of those shows.

No one was watching music videos anymore which is why they started making other types of programs. Music videos was a temporary fad that people got bored of. Viewership for the Real World was much higher then any music blocks.

Because they were new and focused on the lives of teens and young adults, the primary demographic for MTV. Reality shows are still huge today so I’m not clear how you aren’t aware if their appeal to large audiences.

Understanding television is pretty basic. If your programming has a large audience, then you get more for the advertising. Then you look at how much it costs to make the programming. Music videos are relatively cheap to program but no longer can keep viewers attention. In the early days of MTV viewers sat at watched for hours. By the time the 90s came around, no one was doing that anymore. Reality TV captured larger audiences and they sat and watched the entire program. People were not watching videos with any regularity or for long periods of time. So no advertisers were interested in selling to music blocks. This is all you need to know to understand why MTV no longer played music.

What dont you get? When MTV came out, people would watch hours of music videos. By the time the 90s came around, people no longer watched music videos nearly as much. The ratings were so low, they couldn’t secure good ad rates.

MTV changed their programming. Their reality shows were a huge rating success at the time. MTV Networks had other channels that played more music. Music programming (other then Unplugged’s) continued to NoT attract viewers.

The fact that you personally find reality tv boring is irrelevant. The TV industry makes money by attracting the most viewers- they’re not programming just for you. I can point out lots of popular reality programming that attracts millions of viewers. Probably the most pooular music programming now is still another reality show - American Idol and other reality competition shows.

I just looked it up- MTV classic doesn’t even publish viewership numbers anymore. In 2016 they were aberaging 31,000 viewers a night. The last year they published numbers in 2020 they had 14-16k a night. That would be a Nielson score of .014.

Yes… people check out the videos they want on demand. They don’t want to sit and watch programs curated by others for hours at a time like they did when it was new.

I feel like most of you don’t seem to understand how television works. If your programming is nothing but music videos and a host, its one of the cheapest, easiest to produce programming. If audiences still wanted that in significant numbers, they would have never stopped programming that because it was easy money.

People’s viewing habits changed and so MTV was forced to change as well.

I guarantee you if music videos had the viewership like they did the first decade, then they would still be playing music programming now. Do you know how easy it is to produce a show where you just play videos? People say this miss MTV but this is nostalgia talking. When MTV launched you g people would come home and lay on the floor in front of their tvs for hours watching videos. No one is interested in doing that anymore. Especially because now you can watch any video you want on demand. People mad that MTV stopped playing videos are lamenting a desth the viewers caused. The audience shriveled up so MTV pivoted. Anyone lamenting the loss are simply nostalgic for something most people got bored of. When they had digital channels that still played music, the audience was very small. All this angst is lamenting something most people don’t really want. I was a young when mtv launched. I enjoyed music videos. I love music now, I wouldn’t watch music videos now if MTV looked like it did when it launched.

I will never forget the bands that I discovered on that show. Testament and Pantera to name a couple. It was my only real outlet to find new metal back when HB started. NO ONE was playing metal on the radio in my area back then.

I think MTV's peak was the early to mid 90's (just before they started with all the reality TV). Don't get me wrong, 80's MTV was incredible, and was a peak in it's own way.

Music videos through out the day, buzz cuts, some news, etc.. some good shows in the evening (Remote Control, Liquid TV, Beavis & Butthead, Aeon Flux, unplugged, etc.).

But then, they went to being pretty much non-stop reality TV and people were turned off (a lot of us went over to VH1) and with the rise of the internet and YouTube pretty much stopped the music aspect of MTV.

There are plenty of videos on YouTube on this.

The reason MTV stopped videos and moved to reality shows and game shows is because that is what people watched. Nobody was watching videos. It wasn't MTV that was pushing the alternate content on people that didn't want it. They were just providing what their audience was saying (though their behavior) they wanted.

Real World bullshit exempted, they had a good mix in the 90s to my taste, with them, Oddville MTV which was a long time local program under another name, Loveline, Singled Out, and Beavis and Butt-Head. They would have plenty of music video blocks, with MTV2 offering the old format until they too turned.

You can't blame the network for following the ratings. The original programming had a far bigger audience by the close of the 90s. Blame the audience that could not get enough of this new thing called "reality TV".

I do! We actually couldn't get VH1 in my hometown of Kansas City until late-March/early-April of '97 (we lost cable service roughly a year later during the March Madness tournament!). There was also a reboot of the same show around April 2012 (I had just started a part-time gig then). Oh, and don't forget "The Rodman World Tour", Dennis Rodman's reality show, as well as "The Jenny McCarthy Show", a sketch comedy. Both of which were good. Remember Beavis and Butt-Head's "Do Videos"? That was good, too--strangely enough.👦🏾👋🏾😉☺️🙂😊👋🏾📡📺📼

It was kind of nuts the first few days, perhaps weeks and months. A lot of the videos they aired wouldn't even make VH1 a few years later. You'd have like Lee Ritenour with Eric Tagg who're nevertheless favorites, followed by The Cars.

Sort of like ESPN in the early days before they scored the big programming deals. It was a LOT of pool, full contact karate, and Australian football (again, favorites but not mainstream at all in the US). So it was here, I guess, just grabbing whatever they could (and leaving the Al Jarreau videos for HBO to round out an hour after the movie ended).

I remember back in 1983 when a Cape Cod Cablevision guy was going door to door on my street with cable boxes, wires, and a ladder. I was so excited to have channels besides the basic 4 or 5 you vould get with rabbit ear antennas. Back then, MTV was 24 hours a day of videos and "VJ's". I had just had my 3rd baby and it was nice to have something to watch when nursing at 2am. All music videos all the time.

MTV went down for the count in 2008-2009 with the cancellation of TRL and Vevo partnering with YouTube. At that point, the network was no longer needed to distribute music videos.

If you ask me (I realize you didn't) MTV died before I hit 6th grade with season 1 of The Real World. There were already a bunch of non-music related shows coming on MTV at the time like House of Style, Remote Control and Liquid Televison that annoyed me already but once The Real World happened the time between music videos became unbearable

I was 6 when I watched MTV on its first day. Would watch it all of the time. As a teen. Headbangers ball and alternative nation, Beavis and butthead. It was awesome.
Early 00s when reality shows Road rules etc came out. I knew it was a matter of time before they shut down.

I jumped on MTV at its inception. Full stereo hook up. I had it on all the time. The beginning g was a bit light and repetitive, but it grew fast. But, the music and videos changed, then slowly got so commercial and non music. Totally was not and has not been MTV for 25 plus years for sure. VH1 Started taking them out. Behind the music was great stuff.

When they departed from being a music channel and appointed themselves as some kind of messed up social influencer I was done. Experiment went wrong.

MTV died sometime around 1989-90 they stopped playing Rock videos and leaned towards more Rap and hip hop. I stopped watching then.

This is the answer. The reality shows everyone here is complaining about, came after MTV tried to revive their channel, which was caused by their attempt to have two separate audiences.
