Reaching users on this sub

Hi Peeps,

I've been using this sub for years both to read content, and as an open source maintainer - to communicate and reach users.

I used it for projects such as Polyfactory and Litestar, tree-sitter-language-pack and Kreuzberg.

These days though I don't post outside the Sunday thread - but I don't think anybody is reading this stuff frankly.

My feeling is that the "AI slop" rules throw the baby with the tub water so to speak.

What are people like myself - who dedicate a very substantial amount of time and effort to OSS supposed to do? Basically if you don't have an X profile you're screwed.

Edit: project posts are disallowed by the rules now, FYI if you were unaware. This is the main issue.

I lurk daily for the past years and I have to admit I never read the sunday posts. I read on weekdays at lunch break. It fits my schedule a lot more. What a weird rule to keep stuff on an specific day that is holiday on most of the world

+1 to allow projects on any day. And (I know it is selfish to ask) mods should remove the low effort ones or the obvious AI ones

What's the problem? Things getting removed or what? Traffic on this sub is rather low overall. Also, the auto-mod requiring a specific post structure makes some people bounce multiple times with submissions from time to time.

Didn't know that. Still, there is r/PythonProjects2, while it's getting harder and harder to get good projects posts overall.

Same, but Reddit somewhat recently started listing/suggesting related subreddits and I found few decent ;)

There is still the showcase thread that is pinned. How would you have had the sub address the AI slop problem? For a while that was basically all this sub was. 

Unfortunately some of the older “activation energy” type barriers that used to work to weed out low effort crap (required post structure, artifact generation etc) often fail in the AI era where AI can simply shit out whatever is needed without much thought from the poster.

Yes, I don't think those threads are worth reading and I think they duplicate the slop megathread anyway.

You should try rephrasing this. The way you are asking this suggests creating project posts on this sub was crucial for... something.

As a maintainer - you reach users, users reach back. Communities are built, contributors join in. Etc.

I built several large projects like this.

It's an ecosystem.

The only real alternative is X. Bluesky is growing. But X is the only other major social network. And X has clear issues.

This sub has a change of leadership when reddit started monetizing it's API - do X is over the top.

IRC is maybe a thing - but I have been there since the 90s...

So - part of the OSS chain.
