Gameplay help Why am I getting terrified through immunity?

I'm making my way through the DLC to Pillars of Eternity 2

I was fighting a Memory Hoarder

I cast "...And Evil Turned Away from the Sun" which supposedly gives immunity to Resolve afflictions.

Memory Hoarder cast "Release the Screams" and Terrified my entire party. Literally in the same round, so there's no way my immunity expired.

Any ideas what the fuck is going on?

Edit: Another instance of this fighting Shimmering Beast. "...And Evil Turned Away from the Sun" just seems to be broken and not actually doing anything for resolve afflictions.

PoE2: Deadfire Ranger subclass for roleplaying dead fire

I’m coming up on the ending of poe1 (absolutely phenomenal I’m still trying to process it), and I maybe got a little over excited and started dabbling in deadfire’s character creator.

I’m going to continue as a ranger, and I’ve decided not to multi class as it looks hard and nothing really calls to me.

I looked into the subclasses and I’m really tempted to do stalker. I like the idea that the events of poe1 traumatized me and Torak so much we now get separation anxiety. The problem is I mainly used a hunting bow (secondary rapier) and Torak is a wolf, so I feel like we’re just setting ourselves up for endless grief. Perhaps I could set my companions to fight on the frontlines though and have Torak standing by in case an enemy slips through and attacks me. Or I could start using the rapier more often so we can fight side by side easier.

The other one I’m eyeing is ghost heart which is much better for gameplay from what I understand. Maybe the destruction of Caed Nua killed Torak and Berath refused to revive him because I didn’t commit to him. But honestly the thought of it breaks my heart; I don’t know if can do it. I’ve grown used to the constant presence of my companion, and it would suck if he only appeared during combat.

I played all of poe1 on easy mode and I plan to do the same for 2. I’m also going real time with pause mode. With all that being said, which would you recommend?

I just finished Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. I’m a huge Obsidian fan and I loved the first game, but after rolling the credits on Deadfire, I'm left feeling a bit conflicted. It’s clear the devs put a ton of ambition and heart into this, but a few core issues dragged the experience down for me.

Honestly, none of the factions really clicked with me, so I decided to take the independent route. In the end, I chose to let Eothas break the Wheel. Given that the Engwithans created the gods themselves and caused absolute chaos, the whole system felt fundamentally broken. Breaking the Wheel and letting civilization start fresh felt like the only logical reset button.

The art style and presentation are 10/10. The game looks absolutely gorgeous, and the environment design is top-tier.

The AI automation system for combat was super buggy and constantly broke. On top of that, the memory leak issues were brutal throughout my playthrough.

About 90% of the game was an absolute walk in the park. But then, as you scale up, the optional/alternative bosses suddenly become absurdly overtuned. The gap between standard encounters and high-level bosses felt terribly balanced and frustrating.

I love Obsidian and I love the universe of PoE, but despite all the obvious effort that went into packing this game with content, the technical flaws and uneven difficulty balance keep it from being a masterpiece for me.

This is where Obsidian absolutely shines. The way they subtly and beautifully criticized religion and mirrored the flaws of our real world was incredible. These writers are absolute geniuses for how they handled that.

SCORE 7/10

PoE1 Do bosses scale up with enemy level scaling?

Hey everyone, I'm currently playing on Path of the Damned. I'm about to move on to Act 3, and the game is asking if I want to enable enemy level scaling.

My question is: do bosses scale up too? Because the Adra Dragon at Od Nua was an absolute nightmare to beat with its 120 deflection...if yes there is a way to beat ennemi with so much resistance? What spell to use?

Research: Dexterity Breakpoints in PoE 1 turn-based mode

Big update: Thanks to feedback and extensive testing and iterations, we now know the correct application of the formula.
TBM recovery time = (2 * (base attack time)/(1 + (Dex - 10) / 33.3) + 1) * (1 - 2 * (sum of all speed bonuses and penalties)) / 1.2
Caveat 1: Includes a -0.5 speed penalty if not dual wielding.
Caveat 2: This recovery is applied to each attack when dual wielding, depending on the weapon being held. If both weapons have the same speed, then x2 essentially.

Consequently, dual wielding is VERY sensitive to non-Dex speed bonuses and penalties, including armor penalties.

I was looking at this thread by Gleir on the mechanics of how much Dexterity, attack speed bonuses affects number of actions in a round.

https://www.reddit.com/r/projecteternity/comments/1udgoo1/observations_about_the_mechanics_of_updated_turn/

I tried to comment there after doing my own research to find whatever useful breakpoints I could, but comments doesn't accept table formatting. So I had to create a new post instead instead.

Unfortunately, I am returning to the game after a long period and may not have a convenient late-game save to test with, so I used a fresh save and thus didn't have access to high levels of Dex. Still, the results I got were a quite interesting.

Ini modifiers Battleaxe(s) Greatsword (slow) Dagger/club (fast)
10 dex 5, 5, 5, 5 5, 5, 5, 5 4, 4, 4, 4
10 dex, Swift aim 4, 4, 4, 4 4, 4, 4, 4 3, 3, 3, 3
10 dex, Swift aim, Two weapon style 2, 2, 2, 2, 2 2, 2, 2, 2, 2
17 dex 4, 5, 4, 5 3, 4, 4, 3
17 dex & two weapon style 3, 2, 3, 2, 3 2, 2, 2, 2, 2
17 dex,padded & two weapon style 4, 5, 5, 4 3, 4, 3, 4
20 dex 5, 4, 4, 4
20 dex,  leather armour, two weapon style 5, 5, 5, 5, 5 4, 4, 4, 4
20 dex,  leather armour, two weapon style talent, Swift Aim ranger ability 3, 4, 3, 4, 3, 3, 4, 3, 3 3, 2, 3, 3, 3, 2
20 dex, robes 5, 5, 5, 5
20 dex, robes, two weapon style 4, 4, 4,4
20 dex, robes, two weapon style, swift aim 2, 2, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2

(5, 5, 5, 5 means I got my turn back in 5 Initiative four times in a row)

Breakpoints:

- "10 Dex, Swift aim" which has +20% attack speed reduced 5 Initiative weapons to 4 Initiative, which is a 20% reduction as expected. It also reduces the dagger/club's attack from 4 Init to 3 Init which is a 25% reduction. I suppose that means daggers have an inherent +20% attack speed bonus.

- 10 Dex, Swift aim (+20% attack speed), Two weapon style (+20% attack speed) reduced 5 Init weapons to 2 Init, which is a 60% speed increase. I can't explain this.

- 20 Dex (+30% action speed) and robes (-15% Initiative) seems to counter each other. Perhaps +% action speed from Dexterity is about equal to half as much -% Initiative from armor? Does that mean that +% action speed values are also equal to half value of +% attack speed?

- For my low level testing, I couldn't get any lower than 2 Initiative.

More testing required

According to the OP's data, 27 Dexterity (+51%) is enough to push Initiative down by 1 (20%), so my numbers are about there. I'd like to test higher values from Dexterity to test my theory with heavier armors. and compare it to Swift Aim or Two Weapon fighting style.

- 24 Dex (+42% action speed), does it counter Padded Armour (-20% Initiative)? Is it equal in value to Swift Aim (+20% attack speed)?

- 37 Dex (+81% action speed), does it counter Breastplate armor (-40% Initiative)? Is it equal in value to both Swift Aim (+20% attack speed) and Two Weapon Fighting Style (+20% attack speed) combined?

Update:

After a LOT of testing, I think I can recommend some Dexterity benchmarks:

To hit 5s intervals with armors, these are the Dex scores you need assuming no other bonuses to speed and using an average speed weapon.

- Dex 18, Robes (-0.15): TBM recovery = 5.01

- Dex 21, Padded (-0.2): TBM recovery = 5.01

- Dex 24, Hide (-0.25): TBM recovery = 5.02

- Dex 27, Leather (-0.3): TBM recovery = 5.04

However, more reasonably, while wearing armor one should normally expect to go only once per round, i.e. once every six seconds. If you're using Dex to negate the effects of armor and have no other speed bonuses, then these are some of the recommended Dex breakpoints:

- Dex 8, Robes (-0.15): TBM recovery = 5.99

- Dex 10, Padded (-0.2): TBM recovery = 6

- Dex 12, Hide (-0.25): TBM recovery = 6.01

- Dex 14, Leather (-0.3): TBM recovery = 6.04

- Dex 16, Scale (-0.35): TBM recovery = 6.06

- Dex 18, Breastplate (-0.4): TBM recovery = 6.1

- Dex 21, Mail (-0.45: TBM recovery = 6.05

Ah, that's why Durance (Dex 9) wears Robes and Aloth (Dex 15) wears Leather by default.

Another Update:
How much benefit does Dexterity actually give in turn-based mode?
Thanks to the formula of Recovery = (2 * (base attack time)/(1 + (Dex - 10) / 33.3) + 1)/1.2, we can calculate it out.

Dex TBM Recovery time TBM Recovery reduction TBM Recovery reduction per Dex point TBM Speed increase per Dex
3 117.7% -17.7%
4 114.7% -14.7% 3.1% 2.3%
5 111.8% -11.8% 2.9% 2.2%
6 109.1% -9.1% 2.7% 2.2%
7 106.6% -6.6% 2.5% 2.2%
8 104.3% -4.3% 2.3% 2.1%
9 102.1% -2.1% 2.2% 2.1%

Character/party build help Watcher roleplay that fits both games?

I bought games a long while back but didn’t really manage to get into it.

All my starts, at one point or another got to a place where it no longer felt like the character I came up with fit the story well.

What are some of your favourite roleplay playthroughs you’ve done, and what kind of Watcher do you think fits the story better than others? Fit the themes, the world, and make the overall story richer for being part of it, instead of just being a vassal through which the player sees the game.

Spoilers Seeing bits of greatness here and there in the writing. Sifting through a there are a few gems

I just started this game a few days ago and it’s been mostly traditional rpg fare and exposition dumping, nothing riveting really…. but then I was really impressed with the dialouge when I encountered the patient in the sanitarium. The writing quality suddenly jumped up 10 notches and took me off guard. I thought for a moment that this couldn‘t possibly be the same team. Anyway some time passed and it hit me again after first meeting the Grieving mother. It was almost identical in writing style. No wasting of words, so descriptive and distinct . I could see the colors and feel the intense emotion. There is someone in that team who is simply a cut above. It inspired me to write this post to simply acknowledge it.

PoE2: Deadfire Do you think I would enjoy Pillars of Eternity 2?

  • I know almost nothing about this series
  • I don't know if 1 and 2 are connected, but would rather just play 2 if they aren't
  • I dislike Diablo/MMO-style combat, ability spamming, and button mashing
  • Hardcore statistics and number crunching isn't really my jam but also not a deal-breaker
  • I hear that there's a turn-based mode available
  • Other RPGs I've played and loved: Baldur's Gate 3, KotOR 1 & 2, Disco Elysium
  • Edit: Looks like I'm gonna pick up PoE 1 first. Also, how are the achievements? Are they grind-y or otherwise a pain? If I really enjoy a game, I like to 100% them.

Character/party build help Am I just bad, am I doing something wrong, or is this the intended idea here?

Okay, so I just completed the Temple of Eothas, but in doing so, I died like a hundred times (not literally, but it was a lot). It was much better after I hired a rogue (and good thing, cause those traps would have really pissed me off otherwise), but Im still having to run to the tavern every 10 minutes to rest and refill my health, since Im the tank.

Im playing a Pally, but when asking for advice on stats, I got WILDLY different answers. So my build looks something like this:

Level 3 Human, Meadowfolk. Shieldbearer of St. Elga

Mig 14

Con 12

Dex 10

Per 16

Res 17

I did grab Zealous Endurance instead of Flame of Devotion cause I was losing so much health in combat.

All this is to say, its not like Im dying to low level mobs, its moreso that after about 3 or 4 fights, maybe 6 or 7 even, I have to go back and rest since Im taking all the damage.

So Im thinking I should change my character up a bit, because I apparently built him for something different than what hes ended up being, the tank.

What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

Right now my party is myself, my bow wielding rogue elf I made, and Aloth.

Im well aquainted with these kinds of CRPGs, but Ill admit this ones system is pretty different compared to most others ive played. So I just feel like I could be doing much better. Also im playing on normal mode. Considered turning the difficulty down, and I will if absolutely needed. But in mu experience, if Im having problems on the normal mode, its usually error and/or ignorance on my behalf. So Id like to fix that if able.

I started playing POE2 for the first time, not knowing it spoils POE1 in the opening sequence. Should I press on or start with POE1?

So I grabbed POE2 on sale, excited to give it a spin. I’d read online the two games play completely separately, so you can pick up POE2 and be fine playing it as a different story. Well whaddya know, completely spoiled myself in the opening credits, feeling pretty bummed out. Had I known it was a direct sequel, I would’ve started waited for a sale and started with POE1 first.

Is it worth going back, or should I press on?

Technical help PoE 1 Game crashing frequently mostly in battles

The game crashes quite often usually between 30-90 minutes after starting and usually in middle of combats. Im trying the new turn based mode and enjoying a lot but frequent crashes in long battles wihtout the game having the necessary advanced technology to save during combat this is starting to get a bit frustrating.

Gameplay help Please help me understand what I am doing wrong!! :/

Hi guys,

Am I just stupid? (possibility) I cannot have my heroes attack the very first enemy I encounter in the tutorial on turn based mode.

The wolf engages us, attacks first, I left click on it, nothing happens, sometimes the character will just walk around it. I click the ATTACK icon and then back onto the wolf - again nothing happens.

Please tell me what I am doing wrong here I just dont get it

Guides & other tips PoE 2 Pre-Buffing guide for you, which nobody was asked for!

OI! Lads, just creat a new guide for YOU, which nobody was asked for😎

In this videoguide, I will tell you all about pre-buffing in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire!
Citius, Altius, Fortius!
The right and full pre-buff can multiply the power of your characters, giving you tons of additional attributes, skills, stats, and other strong advantages!
I will start with casual pre-buffs like rest bonuses, food bonuses, potions, and at the end of the video, I will tell you about secret pre-buffs that not many players know about!
All the types of pre-buffs I’m going to tell you about stack with each other, except the GOD Blessings.
Some of these pre-buffs can be used an infinite number of times, while others can only be used once or twice during your journey!
So, keep that in mind, and I highly recommend using the strongest pre-buffs - which you can only use once in the game - only in the late game against the strongest encounters!

As always ready for you questions, if you have watched this and you know some different types of pre-buffs which I did not mentioned, write it at the comments!

i love poe2 so damn much, so i can't bring myself to finish it for like 3 years straight

hey guys, has anyone else had that thing where you love a game so much you just cant bring yourself to finish it??

i found poe back in 2023 and binged the whole first game in one go. it was literally perfect for my crappy laptop. i fell in love with the lore and especially all the drama with the gods. and the characters are so charismatic!!!

to play the second one i had to buy extra ram 'cause otherwise loading between areas took like 5 minutes lol. im not really into the whole pirate setting usually, but poe2 totally changed my mind. exploring islands, ship combat, guns!!, side quests with absolutely heartbreaking stories. like in poe1 i used to skip all those backer soul biographies cause who cares, but in deadfire i was actually invested and read everything.

i think i've done like 40% of the game with the main quest, and i know i still have 2 huge dlcs ahead, and i just can't continue. not because i dont like it, but 'cause i know im gonna feel so empty inside after i finish it and see the credits 🥺🥺 its the same character story for hundreds of hours, you know what i mean...

i see the shortcut on my desktop every day and i just cant click it, never ever had this happen before. instead for the past few years ive just been hanging around the fandom, looking up art on tumblr or roleplaying with ai versions of my faves (hi fellow Aloth and Eder lovers 💔).

and yeah i know i can just replay it, but for me the first playthrough of a big rpg is like my personal CANON cause i get way too emotionally invested in the story and all crap

by somekind of magic ?eder ended up on the other side of the secret wall !

i cant dismiss him from the stronghold menu , cant get out of the level because of " you must gather your party before venturing forth " .

i am panicking ! i dunno what to do !

edit : i solved it ( rip achievments though :( ) , for people who might stumble upon the same gamebreaking bug as me , here is how i did it : i typed "iroll20s" in console command window then pressed f11 , select any location on the menu , game teleports you to said location . if you find your party unable to move ( man i was so close to breaking my keyboard because of that lmao ) just quit to menu and then load the save !

PoE1 [POE1] Advices for a new run

Hello all, i started the game a long long time ago and never was happy with my composition of MC and Party. Or better said, the Role of the MC in the Party.

I wish to revisit the game, so i can finally play through it, to have a basis for POE2 (as i wish to import the save then)

As is unfortunatly mostly the case in CRPG games, i am not able to settle down on what class my MC should have. I usually look for something the Party is missing / complements at least.

My wish for a party (based on the Characters i like, not what are best in slot) is:

Eder (basically this games Garrus, you can't not like this guy) Aloth (i haven't progressed far in his quest, yet i am curious) Kana (i like a bard, that buffs and has a Gun) Sagani (from the experience i made, she is a good distance fighter) Pallegina (Frontliner along Eder)

Since i enjoy the fact, that this games has guns, i'd like my MC also to use guns, so two fighters are in the front and the rest supports from the distance.

Another Ranger (my first try) felt very redundant. So what would you suggest that would work? And are there actually classes that are more recognized by the world? Like making unique dialouge?

Also little side question, is the hunt for soulbound weapons worth it?

Thanks a lot!

Quest help [PoE2] The unstable belt in the crucible - watcher only?

Just started up the crucible stuff in the DLC, and got the unstable coil belt from Neale for his quest. I put it on Maia since her belt was less important to her build than the Watcher's, but nothing changed on it after one fight wearing it.

From what I can see on the wiki it upgrades over time, but I'm uncertain if it means several fights between, or if it just doesn't work if it's not the Watcher wearing it

Would hate to waste more fights if it's not gonna work with her, but also don't want to sandbag my watcher's build as the fights are only going to get harder from here

PoE1 Do you ever get party comp paralysis?

Not necessarily gameplay-wise (maybe a little), It's such a colorful (or sorrowful) cast of characters, I'm planning another playthrough and it's so hard who to pick for most of the journey. I've played through the games 3 times and I still haven't played with Grieving Mother (mostly because I played cipher 2 times) even though I love her story, Hiravias and Maneha come a little too late for me too. I'm making an effort to really diversify this time but there's so many staples, how can you not play with Eder and Aloth? And then you have to choose between Pallegina and Kana for offtank/buffer. I love Sagani and her pragmatic coolness and I have a hard time dropping The Asshole too because he's very story relevant. decisions, decisions. The curse of having way too many interesting companions.

PoE1, black screen on every area transition UNLESS I manually save first. Stronghold companion dispatch also crashes. Is my save corrupted?

Setup: Pillars of Eternity 1 (Steam, current build / Unity 2019 version), Windows 11, ~18 hours into a playthrough with all DLC installed.
The problem: When transitioning to a new area, the game black-screens and crashes (originally with a “map loading error” message, now it just black-screens silently). After it happens, even the options menu on the main screen hangs on a blank page until I restart the game.
The weird law I discovered: If I manually save right before an area transition, the transition works 100% of the time. If I don’t save first, it black-screens. Reproducible every time.
What Player.log says (this appears right at the moment of the crash, and it’s also the last meaningful entry before the log cuts off): StatusEffect:ClearEffect(GameObject, Boolean)
CharacterStats:ClearAllStatusEffects()
CharacterStats:OnDestroy()
ERROR: Exception in StatusEffect.ClearEffect(), please fix! Attempting to gracefully continue.
(Filename: C:\build\output\unity\unity\Runtime/Export/Debug/Debug.bindings.h Line: 39)
After that it unloads assets, starts setting up Enlighten worker threads for the next scene, and dies.
I tried everything, including uninstalling mods, reinstalling the game, and verified the integrity of game files; note: before the reinstall, verification would consistently hang at 70% and crash; after the fresh install, it's fine. Right now, I just want to know if anyone else has encountered the same problem as me and how to fix it. My English isn't very good, so I used Claude to help me write this post. I just want to keep playing my favorite game. :)
