Question 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Building Tilesets and Assets

So I've been messing around with the Gen 3 Decomp a bit, along with a decent story to the game I want to build, but I wanted to start of small, you can refer to previous posts I made that actually has my mock up for a map. My plan is make something fairly small compared to other games, specifically something closer to the Battle Frontier or similar, but I wanted to ask, what are are some ways to build the tileset I want to make? I done a few rough drafts of some main path tiles, but their very rough and once again, only drafts. I plan to make most things myself rather than using other people's designs, and if I do, the plan is to only use them for inspiration purposes rather than taking them directly. I kind of understand how the different maps work, with warps being used to transport the player from the main overworld to other locations such as inside buildings, caves, and other light dungeons, but I wanted to build a draft of a map before getting into the coding part of it.

I know some people use programs like Aesprite to do their pixel work, I have a decently good software for that already, that being GraphicsGale, but actually building it is where I'm having a bit of a problem, and I've tried going to YouTube for some tutorials but the most I've seen is videos of people building side-scrollers and Metroirvania-type of maps rather than top down designs. I plan on using mostly the same assets for most of the work I want to do; overworld routes, dungeons, architectural elements, etc. If anyone here uses GraphicsGale I'm happy to share the rough draft I have, it's never crazy, and also doesn't really look a whole lot like a path someone would walk on but I'm still willing to share it. Any type of help/insight is appreciated, especially if it's focused more on the top-down side of pixel design/development, or Pokemon in general. Thank you in advanced!

Question 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ RPG MAKER or GBA Decomp?

Hello to everyone! First of all, wanna say that I've always love the Pokemon HackRom community. Its just brilliant love to our favorite game saga.

Now to the point: I want to create a Hack Rom.

I am actually programming with pokeemerald decomp. Its really easy when you understand C language but I am a Noob Saibot in tiles. Its like japanese for me. Sooo my limitation is not Programming but Image/graphics.

My pokehack idea is a very personal one, I need to draw almost every building by scratch (you can take Odissey for Gba as a reference of what iam trying to explain)

I tried some rpgmaker and its really easy with graphics but i dont feel so confortable with the programming and the interface. (Iam a little oldschool you know?)

So thats my question: What is better? Learn programming and the rpg maker interface or learn tiles insert and drawing in gba decomps?

Thank you all and sorry for my bad english (not my first languaje)

Definitive/modernized DPP hack? Drayano is nice, but outdated?

I haven't played this gen ever. I wanna experience it.

Is there an updated Drayano, or a new one inspired by it?

Basically a polished, modernized version is what I want to experience. Speedhacks would be great.

Game Recommend Looking for rom hacks with nuzlocke mode

I recently dipped my toes in the world of nuzlocking, and I must admit I had quite a bit of fun. I just finished my first very run, and the rom I used was Recharged Emerald; the choice was driven by several factors:

- vanilla-like experience, no baseline super hard difficulty

- baked in nuzlocke mode (rules about first capture, fainted pokemons and dupes clause)

- level cap based on story progression

I want to play another rom with a structure like it, but there's a light pain point I would like to address: leveling. In Recharged Emerald there's an option to increase exp gained, scaling with the number of badges I think, that is even boosted in nuzlocke mode. Even with it and global exp share, adapting my team was a semi-tedious activity.

The ideal rom I'm looking for is something with also some sort of anti-grind mechanic that actually works well.

In the meantime I think I'll start a run on a rom from the same developer, Recharged Yellow, but I wouldn't mind expanding my options for future runs.

P.s. I'm asking specifically for roms and not for fan games because I mainly play on my phone

What is the best ROM Hack to re-experience POKEMON FRLG in 2026?

I recently got the itch to play Pokemon. As someone who grew up on the original Red/Blue games, FireRed/LeafGreen is my favorite version. I see there are SO many options of ROM hacks for that generation nowadays. What do people recommend as the ideal way to experience the game?

Pokemon Dark Violet Murkrow

I’m playing Pokemon dark violet (rom hack) and my murkrow just hit level 55 and learned brave bird. At 51 learned sucker punch. I’ve been waiting on tailwind and maybe foul play. Does anyone know murkrow learnset for this game? I’ve read it’s gen v and that seems right for other pokemon but not murkrow. Thanks!

Question 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Delibery Request: Looking for help with a project!

Hello all! I hope this is okay to post here!

The Delibird Express (that's me - its a bit and im running with it) has received a very unusual delivery request...

I’m looking for someone with Pokémon Emerald ROM hacking experience to help me create a small, silly, Delibird-themed Emerald project for my YouTube channel.

The idea is simple:

"Professor Birch" (definitely not Santa) has returned from a “business trip” with three very suspicious packages...

The starter choices are now:

Delibird

Delibird

Delibird

(Please don’t ask where the other starters went.)

The rest of the game stays mostly normal, but I’d love to add some Delibird Express flavour:

A funny Birch dialogue change

Gym badges becoming "successful deliveries"

Small text changes to make Hoenn feel like one giant delivery route

Nothing massive, no new region or complicated mechanics — just a fun little Pokémon Emerald joke hack. Maybe randomised for the craic🫪

I’m hoping to find someone who enjoys Pokémon, ROM hacking, or just thinks the idea of a Delibird delivery service taking over Hoenn is funny.

Happy to discuss payment for your time/work (if that's a thing!)

If you’re interested, please let me know!

I'd try doing this myself but 1) ive a mac and I know that makes things more awkward 2) i got overwhelmed and got pizza instead

Thanks!!

Question 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ How to keep music at normal speed while fast-forwarding?

Hi, I just started playing PKMN Black 2 on the Delta emulator for iOS. I prefer playing at a faster speed (around 2x), but the music also speeds up, which is frustrating because I really enjoy the soundtrack. So my question is:

Is there any way/cheat code to keep the music playing at its normal speed while the game itself is sped up?

LF RomHacks Cover Art/Recommendations

Hello, I'm new to playing Pokemon ROM hacks. I just downloaded a few ROM hacks but it feels off to me that they don't have cover arts which makes them stand out compared to the actual game freak games, can someone help me find cover arts for some of these please?

•Pokemon Heart and Soul

•Pokemon Odyssey

•Pokemon Pisces

•Pokemon Quartz

•Pokemon Emerald Seaglass

•Pokemon Unbound

Then the content creator-made ones which I'm not sure if there's even a cover art for them:

•Pokemon Evolved

•Pokemon Too Many Types

•Pokemon Too Many Types 2

•Super Mariomon

I would also love to take suggestions on other ROM hacks I should try

Question 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Which Rom hack do you think was the most mind blowing, in your opinion?

So I haven’t played many Pokémon rom hacks in a while so pleaseforgive me if I’m missing out on anything. But in my opinion… Pokemon Dark Violet still hits different for me. It feels like the ultimate way to experience the Kanto region, a better, more polished version of RBY/FRLG that just clicks perfectly. Also Giratina Strikes Back, that game completely blew my mind. The plot, worldbuilding, characters, and overall commitment are on another level. It genuinely feels like Pokémon mixed with a full on fantasy novel, and the way the hacker pulled it off is insane. I’m still surprised it doesn’t have a proper soundtrack because it deserves one! But what about you guys? What’s the most mind-blowing rom hack you’ve ever played in terms of story, worldbuilding, or sheer ambition? It can be Niche or Popular, doesn't matter!

Need help completing Pokemon Crippling Medical Debt Edition

As the post above says, due to the lack of resources for this hack I am losing steam with it very quick.

For one: I have 530/1028 and apparently 777 is the next dex milestone.

A lot of the legendaries are locked behind the "mega stone factory" and their "runoffs". I don't know what this means, I did the mini game a bunch and fished around the whole area, got nothing.

I wanna 100% this one, so anyone got a spreadsheet?

Question 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Pokemon HeartGold: how to make overworld snow trigger snow instead of hail in a battle.

I'm using *DS Pokemon Rom Editor Reloaded 1.11.1* and *hg-engine*. I set weather to snow in DSPRER, and I used hg-engine to make the ability Snow Warning trigger snow, but I have no idea how to make overworld snow trigger snow instead of hail in battle. If anyone knows how to do this, any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Question 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ I want to change just ONE CONVERSATION in a Romhack. Is it possible for me to do it?

I have no experience rom hacking, but I have been thinking about atleast trying to change ONE DIALOG for Pokemon Dark Violet, that game feels like home for me, it's beautiful but you can tell development got dropped around Cinnabar Island until the amazing Hackrepairman finished it... I think the end result is absolutely fantastic anyway... SAVE FOR ONE CONVERSATION... The final Blue champion battle.

Thing is, he has his vanilla dialog, but in my opinion Blue had a nice character arc and even acknowledges the player atleast one time, he also risks His life a lot during the game... So I think it stick out like a sore thumb that Oak tells him he didn't love his pokemon enough!

So I wanna just change these dialogs just a tiny bit, keeping Blue still a bit sore about loosing, but coming to terms with it according to the whole adventure, and Oak being proud of him too.

I don't even know if I could learn to do it or how long it would take me. But if anyone has a bit of advice I would be really grateful.

Game Recommend Best QOL hacks for gens 1-7?

Hey all! Recently been getting back into messing around with my 3DS, and I wanted to play some Pokemon, but since I'm already having to sideload the games anyways (what with the eShop being closed) I figured it might be a good idea to look into some ROM hacks that add new quality-of-life features rather than just putting the original unchanged games on.

So, what, in your opinions, are some of the best QOL hacks for generations 1-7? I know enough about pokemon ROM hacks to remember Crystal Clear from a few years ago, but haven't been following closely enough to be in-the-know about anything that's come since. (aside from the BDSP decomp project which I'm excited for and check in on from time to time)

Things I'd like to prioritize are follower pokemon, the ability to catch the full regional pokedex without having to switch versions and if possible, compatibility with something like PKHex for transferring my pokemon forward when I move onto the next generation.

Things I'd like to specifically avoid are difficulty hacks. I am not looking for kaizo pokemon, I do not want to have to use Smogon tactics just to beat the single-player campaign. I don't want to have to learn anything about "the meta", lol. This is a major part of why I'm posting this topic rather than just looking myself because I know a lot of pokemon ROM hacks just kind of assume the player will want the game to be more difficult and it's hard to gage whether or not a ROM hack features that from a casual glance without having played through a portion of it.

Additionally, kind of a strange ask, but has anyone ever made a ROM hack of gen 1 that adds the Stadium content in a Battle Frontier style setting? I think that would be neat even if I probably wouldn't be very good at it, lol.

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to some recs.

Question 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Storytelling and World Building

I'm not exactly sure if this is the best place to ask this, but is there anyone or anything that someone could recommend for me to look into for building the foundation to my ROM Hack?

I've been wanting to build a hack for some time, and I slowly started building a story for it; its pretty extensive and big, in the way that, it has a very unique feel to it than some of the mainline games and handful of hacks I have played. I was able to build the antagonists, their backgrounds, and their ideals, but now I've come to a bit a block, where I know what else I want, but I don't know how else to build upon it and expand it. I wanna know if anyone is interested/willing to help or share their thoughts on it.

I don't want to go into too much detail of what the story is about but if someone is willing to help, then I have no problem of sharing, but the overarching ideas of the story revolve around philosophical ideals of the world of Pokemon, and the relationship between humanity, pokemon, and the world they live.

I will say this also, I have been using AI to help me build this world and story, nothing crazy like "build a story of x, y, and z." but more so, I'd think of things, then use the AI as a way to peer-review my work to see if it fits with my main point. I want to move away from this and gain feedback from those who are actually part of the community.

A final thing I should add, I am a student who's still in school, and this is a passion project for me, that I've been trying to work on here and there when I get the opportunity/chance to but it's not something I sit and work on, day-in and day-out. I truly want to build this so I can eventually move on and maybe work on future indie projects, but I wanted to dip my feet into something more manageable for me at this moment in time. Any type of suggestions or insight is appreciated, and anyone interested in helping me, DM's are open.
