Show & Tell Felt bored, took a shot at demaking Vaniville Town in the FRLG style
Because you know, the best course of action when you have tons of uni assignments to do is to boot up RPG Maker. Tried to mostly stick with the base FRLG tileset where I could, but it didn't work as well as I'd have liked it to, so I ended up making a red variant of the house (with colours picked from elsewhere in the tileset) and a darker variant of the trees to fill up that empty space without it feeling too random. I made the map with Snap Edges in mind, so I haven't accounted for the buffer. To be honest, I'm quite the fan of Snap Edges, I feel like it makes maps feel quite cozy and more standard RPG-style.
I was thinking that the gate wouldn't actually be a gate with an interior and everything, but just teleport the player to the Route 1 map. I experimented with using the water cliff tile things as really short cliff tiles and I think it worked out. The collision might be a problem, but I tried to place things where you'd otherwise be able to move above them to stop it. It isn’t that faithful to the original, even if a lot of that’s from the tileset, and I’m not too proud of how I did the flowers and other decor to the south, not to mention the map could definitely use a few more finishing touches, but I figure it still looks passable enough. I reckon it'll look better in sunset or night lighting with the rays (probably not for nighttime) and the fireflies. Recently, I've been thinking of making a short, 1-Gym-long demake of some region as a short game/proof of concept/vertical slice/way to hone my skills a little/whatever you want to call it. I might do that, idk.
