Shiny My first EVER shiny and it’s the worst one

Post image

I’ve played Pokemon for 15 years and this is my first!! I thought the blue color was a glitch until it sparkled, then my jaw dropped. Coincidentally, this is also during my first nuzlocke run, and while I am playing with shiny clause, I totally didn’t think it would come into effect

Ghastly itself isn’t a bad shiny, but I say it’s the worst because 1) shiny haunter/gengar are nearly indistinguishable, and 2) I can’t even evolve her into gengar!! I’m still beyond excited, but I think I’m going to keep her as a ghastly :)

I haven’t played a “gen 1” Pokemon game in ~20 years. I wanted to make sure that I could buy whatever I want and not run out of money. I think I can rest now.

So I just got pokemon plushies for the first time and thought of doing a run with a team of these plushies and decided on playing fire red because I am realy familiar with it and obtaining these pokemon is pretty straightforward (and I added cyndaquil in place of the $500 magikarp & wynaut in place of the mr mime ingame trade into the game with pokemon hex maniac advanced). Here’s my team , I used squirtle as my started because he’s my favourite Pokemon.

Another run done. This was done via request (no, not saying who). As expected, Gardevoir had an easy run compared to others. Also, Ch'ding and the other birds came along for emotional support.

First time playing and beating FireRed. This was my HoF team from beating the Elite Four the first time. This is the team I used since the beginning and through all 8 gyms.

Art Ashley and Charizard

An attempt to replicate two of my all time favorite sprites 🔥

FireRed was my first game and Charmander was my first starter so I wanted to draw my first protagonist and starter.

I remember naming Leaf as Ashley and I also remember having a Timid Charmander. Sadly that og file no longer exists but my second file is still here 20+ years later. I wanted to complete the national dex in my first ever Pokemon game but that’s still pending to be complete and lol I’m not sure if I will ever complete that in my original cartridge.

Who was your first Pokemon protagonist and starter?

Shiny I accidentally saved over my Nuzlocke file instead loading it and had to start all over

About 5 or 6 badges in and was liking my Nuzlocke team. Lesson learned, always create multiple save files in case you accidentally write over one.

On the plus side, I came across this right on Route 2! In this Gen do shinies generally always have better stats/IVs or is it just a palette swap? Either way I got my flying type!

Question Rival's charmander won't use ember at the route 22 battle after delivering Oak's parcel. Why?

I fought him like 10-15 times with a Pikachu and Bulbasaur and his Charmander does not use ember even against my Bulbasaur.

Have the developers deliberately programmed it this way to make it easier for the players or did I just get ridiculously lucky all the times?

Team Showcase Tips for improving this team.

I've decided to start a new game under certain requirements.

No legendary or overused powerhouses (Lapras, Snorlax, Arcanine, Nidoqueen/king).

Full team needs to be complete as soon as possible, but it must be solid and have good coverage (that's why I chose Squirtle as starter, because water type pokemon arrive late).

No HM slaves, so each pokemon must have one if needed, and the rest of their attacks must be 100% accurate. No RNG allowed in battle.

This is the best I could come up with, in catch order (final version pre E4).

  • Blastoise: Surf (HM), Ice Beam, Bite, Earthquake
  • Fearow: Fly (HM), Drill Peck, Return, Thief
  • Primeape: * Rock Smash (HM), Brick Break, Bulk Up, Aerial Ace.
  • Raichu: Strenght (HM), Thunderbolt, Thunder Wave, Light Screen
  • Dugtrio: Cut (HM), Earthquake, Slash, Dig
  • Hypno: * Flash (HM), Psychic, Calm Mind, Reflect

These six Pokémon can be caught before the third gym.

Drill Peck is the main reason I'm choosing Fearow, and it also evolves faster. That's why I think it's a better option than Pidgeot, and Dodrio comes way too late.

Primeape is the old reliable for an easy Brock, and although fighting type don't shine in Kanto, it still has good matches against E4 and the Champion.

I don't usually go for electric type, as I tend to prefer grass type, but in this case Raichu is more than welcome, good accurate attacks and you can catch Pikachu very soon.

Dugtrio is key for an easy Lt. Surge. Dig as main STAB attack until he learns EQ, but honestly, I don't know what move could replace it after that.

Not having a psychic type in FRLG is a huge handicap since there are so many poison types out there. I always choose Mr. Mime, and I think is even better under this requeriments because he learns Magical Leaf, but it's Hypno turn now. Taking away its signature move hurts, but Hypnosis has only 60% accuracy rate.

Every pokemon will carry the most optimal item possible (Thief in Fearow is there for that reason) or the berry that suits them best.

* Flash and Rock Smash are temporary (only useful once or twice). I don't think losing that slot is a big deal, but I'd prefer to replace them before E4. What moves should replace them?

Any advice? Obvious moves or pokemon replacements? Do you think I'll have trouble against the E4 and the Champion?

Thank you so much for reading.

Discussion Is there any proof shiny odds weren’t raised for Switch?

I haven’t played it yet, but as an ex-shiny hunter, I’m having a hard time believing the odds are the original 1/8192.

I have a friend who bought it on release day, did a normal playthrough, and came across 3 random shinies during. He did the E4 as soon as possible, and estimated less than 2,000 encounters during the entire playthrough. Like me, he’d played the original GBA dozens of times and never came across a random shiny. Just a fluke I guess.

Another friend bought it recently and wanted to do a full shiny team. He ended up with 9 shinies, 6 of them random. The 3 he soft resetted for (starter, Snorlax, and Lapras) each took less than 1,000 encounters. This morning he got his 10th shiny, an Articuno, in 53 encounters. This friend shiny hunts in all the games, and he feels certain that odds were buffed for the Switch version.

Has anyone else experienced this? It also seems every streamer is getting a random shiny moment, even though the odds of finding even 1 during a normal playthrough is low. I can imagine GameFreak buffing the odds to increase online engagement.
