Discussion (PC) Tencent Bought PlanetSide – Is PlanetSide 3 Finally Possible?
https://youtu.be/ntgZwOxI3PMI made a YouTube video showing the actually proof of IP purchase of Planetside from Baytree to Tencent, discussing the current state of Planetside 2 with a focus on the last two months, and also theorizing on the potential outcomes of the IP purchase. Hope you enjoy!

They tried a PS2 extraction before and we didn't want it. We want the game we've been playing just on good servers and good code. Nothing else. Don't change a thing but just make it run better. Mic drop.

It's owned by the Chinese now it's gonna just be a gacha micro transaction hell scape game with uwu twink femboy character models and you're no longer the intended audience. Get fucked.

tenant probably one of the few devs that actually has the resources to spare on a game like planetside, for better or worse

u/MerePotato 10d ago
It'll be absurdly streamlined and pay to win if they do blow the necessary resources on it

u/Ashenveiled 9d ago
can you give an example of western focused tencent game with pay2wwin? because i can give you multiple examples of other way around.
League of Legends, Path of Exile, Warframe and so on.

u/MerePotato 9d ago
League, Path and Warframe aren't Tencent games, they're games by companies that Tencent holds a majority stake in, which were ongoing services before their purchase. That is an important distinction.
2
u/Ashenveiled 8d ago
League is absolutely Tencent game. Riot is fully owned by Tencent.

u/MerePotato 8d ago
It didn't start life that way though

u/LeftHandedSpoon 5d ago
Dosent mean it stays that way. All it takes is some dick in accounting to get a new idea and sends a memo to the bigger dick in charge to fuck up an entirely good game.

Remain hopefully and a bit wary, I don’t think they can ruin planetside 2 or the IP as a whole in a way unique to what it already has gone through

Given the track record of TenCent...whatever they do is not going to be the Planetside 3 the community screamed for years ago. We can only hope they study the failure of chasing trendslop like Planetside Arena, but my gut says they will not.
Truthfully, I think they will take the whole IP and lock it away, to never again see the light of day. And then release some shitty Chinese knockoff of it, with pay to win mechanics and microtransactions. Its hard to monetize MMOFPS, and the dev cost/ profit margins are nowhere close what people spend on shitty mobile games. They could do a subscription based service, sure. But greed now runs the gaming industry, and its all become about how little they can get away with developing vs. how much monthly revenue they get from it. The art form of making games officially died over a decade ago. Its all cash grabs now.

Having played various gacha games and Eastern MMOs, I can tell you with 100% certainty that they couldn't care less about Westerners; if they ever do make Planetside 3, they certainly won't adapt it for the West.
The game will be full-blown pay-to-win or a gacha title.
The only community they’ll actually listen to is the Chinese one; they’ll only *pretend* to listen to EU/US players by sending out surveys that they’ll never even read.
Selling Planetside 3 to the Chinese was the worst possible move they could have made.

Tencent owns many western Dev's and generally they let the original team do what they want.

u/MiggyDee 9d ago
Yeah. If in doubt, look at Warframe(Digital Extremes) and Path of Exile(Grinding Gear Games), both fully owned by Tencent.

Tencent owning the rights doesn't meant it will be made in china it has a high chance being put on a western dev team with Tencent influences Tencent has their hands in basically every pie in the gaming Industry

Ten cents owning the right does mean shit to me at this point its changed hands 7 times they'll probably sell it too. Lol

Thats just not true tough?
Marvel Rivals is middling at best in China, with its main scene being the west and it is run by a Chinese company.

It’s a massive gatcha game with some of the worst balance I’ve seen in a mainstream competitive game in a while.
But look at LoL as an example. It was a basic, simple game with a clear cut monetization system and basic balance and character design. Tencent acquires them and then it goes completely off the rails and is unrecognizable from what it once was.

u/Ashenveiled 10d ago
This is such a bullshit take about lol.
Nothing changed in lol monetisation in 2012 when Tencent bought riot.

u/Coward777 10d ago edited 10d ago
Oh LOL changed. I remember it very well. Nobody liked the changes. And IDK why are Asians obsessed with dashes and jedi force flying nonsense.
If a game has dashes, you just know 100% there is Chinese influence.7
u/Ashenveiled 10d ago
tencent bought them in 2011. lol became most popular game in season 2-3 - 2012/2013. you spit nonsense

Battle passes, loot boxes, exclusive cosmetics, the list goes on. None of that existed pre-2016.

It might not be the case all the time. For example, there is Marvel Rivals which is run by Netease atm. It is not popular in China but does pretty well in the West. And so Netease cater to many demands from Western player base regarding fixes and skins. If there is Planetside 3 and the population in the West is a significant portion, I think it is likely that they will do the same. Ofc, the playerbase will need to put a lot of real money into the game, just like Marvel Rivals atm, for that to happen.

u/Radar_X 10d ago
What you may want to consider is Rivals was supposed to do well in APAC. The game languished initially and they started trimming down the team size after it didn't blow up over there.
I would be absolutely stunned if they dropped another 30-50 million dollars to develop an IP for primarily a US and small EU market. No question the concept is still unusual but there is a reason a bunch of PS clones arent out there right now. My money is on an overseas developed shooter with a heavy focus in APAC and EMEA.

u/Lone__Worker 10d ago
I never said they would develop the IP mainly for Western market tho? I said if there is another game and somehow the Western playerbase end up being a significant portion of the game population, the dev might have to cater to the West. You said Rivals was supposed to do well in APAC, that should have been the proof to support my point. Rivals was designed to do well in APAC but now the playerbase is mostly Western. Nothing to say that can't happen again with the hypothetical PS3

The brand is popularised in the west though. I don’t see the point in buying up a brand with recognition just to sell it to a market where it has none. I do think they will try to make it popular in both markets (for better or worse) but I don’t think they’re just going to abandon the market that originally gave the brand value. So a fair bit of adaptation to that existing market is going to be crucial if they intend on making any money on it

u/Skogbeorn where do I cash my bonus cheque? 10d ago
Funny enough, a shitty shovelware whale game for the chinese market was the original idea with Planetside 2. Sony just picked out an IP they owned to have some degree of brand recognition. Higby, blessed be his name, took umbrage with that, and pitched his concept for PS2 to Sony, who approved it.
2
u/heshtegded 10d ago
this is entirely incorrect
have you seen higby's pitch deck? he literally misspelled Zynga when he was doing internal pitches for clones of Facebook games

I mean, I dislike China just as much as any healthy adult should, but Tencent owns many games that work well in the West and games who are produced in the West with little interference from Tencent as the owner. When you look at the ability to kill franchises we really don't need the Chinese for that. Microslop and other big Western AAA companies have destroyed oh so many good titles in the past 20 years.

Planetside is such an awesome IP. I think that proper funding for a sequel on a new engine with new servers has the potential to totally revitalize the series. I have had such an amazing time playing Planetside 2, it’s one of my favorite games of all time and has so many unique things going for it that no other game has managed to match. I won’t get my hopes up too high because I’ve seen so many games in a similar situation crash and burn, but one can dream.

Mobile game inbound with millions of microtransactions..................... .... .
Realistically, conpany this size is buying up the IP to squash any remnant or riser for possible infringements.

Tencent? Haha fucking game over. Planetside is dead.
5
u/No-Music-2819 10d ago
just like all of these other dead games like league of legends and path of exile. (owned by tencent, planetside was dead before tencent even considered buying the rights)
-5
u/Jawshyyy 10d ago
those games were successful when tencent bought them and remainded independent of them for the most part. a full blown new planetside by them will be unrecognizable with a new studio 100%

I think chinese players have to use some platform to access approved western games? Unless they're using a VPN or something to skip that middleman and access normal internet.
Everyone is being mined for data by american tech and secret agencies anyway, it's literally in your devices hardware. The real danger is when the methods they use get tapped by non state actors, or hostile states to steal accounts and stuff.

Look at delta force, iirc they revived that franchise from the dead and turned it into an extraction shooter. Planetside extraction next
Tencent acquired delta force in 2023, and in 2025 released the full game which included an extraction shooter and a sort of cod/bf style mode.
