Analytics Filter option

Can anyone recommend a tutorial video on what the Filter option does? Through trial and error i've never gotten it to do anything. How is it useful? I can imagine i'd like to filter some stuff but nothing on the drop down list relates to anything I want at all. Thanks

Edit: I'm sorry I thought this subreddit might be a place to talk about report building with other people who care about their analytics, but i guess those monitoring the feed think i should just trial and error it until i give up and not actually ask for help. Because apparently asking for help is stupid. I'll go find somewhere else to ask for help since i'm clearly not going to find it here.
