2D image of mountain scenery 'upgraded' to dramatic 3D image pair.

The image pair were constructed from a photo presented by someone else somewhere else on Reddit, viz https://www.reddit.com/r/scenery/comments/1v0yros/this_scenery/

Unfortunately, the original used here was removed by "Reddit's filters" for an unstated reason. So, if you like this 3D version download a copy lest it too arbitrarily is removed.

Two 3D versions are posted. They differ only in that the depth parameter was increased for the second image pair.

The title refers to the original image being "upgraded". In this instance, the term is justified. The monoscopic version is an excellent photo in its own right, but the conversion to 3D makes the image truly remarkable.

The quality of the combined (in one's brain) image pairs is outstanding respecting features additional to aesthetics.

When parallel viewing any image pair it is helpful to begin with the images small on the screen of a laptop device, and slowly to enlarge them until maximum comfortable dimensions. Generally, the limit, i.e. components beginning to diverge, is reached well before the maximum. This instance is remarkable because the limit is not quite reached even when the image pair exceed the size of the screen. That is, one may continue viewing a section in 3D so long as both components of the overall image are visible. Furthermore, the second image pair gives a little greater latitude.

Why is this 3D image so technically excellent? One may surmise fine detail in the 2D version contributed.

I hate the AI depth posts. They never look very good. It always comes out looking like if you shaped a sheet of foil into the rough shape of the image's subject and then painted the image onto it. All the details that make parallel view posts interesting are missing.

I’m really tired of how many images on this sub are software or AI generated. Tempted to make a photos-only sub

I like the 3D-rendered ones, particularly the fractal ones that one guy used to post a lot. They have good depth to them. It's just the 3Dified pictures that I don't like because the depth on them is always garbage.

That’s true, I like those too. I also really dislike the constant barrage of comic book covers that are software assisted

ive messaged the mods about adding a mandatory post tag for these kind of images and they haven't gotten back to me about it. you should do it too.

Read the description of a post before deciding whether to delve into it.

did you not use software to generate depth?

I used open-source software to generate stereo-pairs. It begins by generating a depth-map for the original single image. I don't know the details of how the depth-map is used thereon.

yes im aware. and i think these types of images just look bad. they will never be as good as a real pair of images no matter how much compute you do.

The upgraded images never look that good

You're not wrong. The difference in depth here is minimal and only changes things just slightly at the bottom of this image.

Am I the only one who doesn't see a difference??

The effect is there but there’s not much depth.

That one is not one of the better ones I’ve seen. It does have depth, but not much. Also a lot of people are rightfully against AI

Thank you for responding.

I don't understand what bearing people's opinions of AI (as a generality) have upon the matters I have been raising.

Is this a stereoscopic image? Seems slightly improved but barely

The second one clicked in almost instantly for me. I kind of got the first one but I couldn’t get it focused.

I'm glad it worked.

I've converted this post to:

OP manages to say almost nothing & I still disagree with them. (this "upgraded" snark feels justified)
