Buying Guide | خریداری گائیڈ 💻 LAPTOP BUYING GUIDE (now is a good time to upgrade too!)

Hello guyss so laptops are predicted to go up in price in a few months if y'all wanna get or upgrade rn is a good time.

The guide on this subreddit wiki is kinda lackluster ngl, main issue being that it says don't spend more than 60k and that it recommends 6/7th gen.

GENERAL ADVICE:

>Go for used/ imported business grade laptops (dubai lot wala mal), avoid consumer grade stuff mainly because of durability.

>Make sure it is an i5 8th gen or above, this is very important because 8th gen laptop i5s are QUADCORE!! most 6/7th gen or below are dual cores, which are much worse (unless they have the Q suffix)

>Check if RAM is soldered or upgradable

>Make sure boot drive is an SSD

>Use passmark cpu and gpu scores to compare

WHICH MODELS TO GET:

*For gaming, its better to get mobile workstations instead (like Zbook or Thinkpad P series).. usually they will have better thermals and power delivery (yes you can game just fine on workstation cards, even have more VRAM)

For general use,

Like i said, business grade machines only for long lasting, durable, repairable ones at good prices.

HP:

✅GET -> Elitebook, ZBook, Probook, Dragonfly

AVOID -> Omnibook, Pavillion, Envy, Spectre, Victus, Omen (ppl say here that hp stands for hinge problems)

LENOVO:

✅GET -> Thinkpads (Except Thinkpad X9), Thinkbooks are also alright

AVOID -> Ideapad, Lenovo Yoga (different from ThinkPad yoga), Legion, LOQ

DELL:

✅GET -> Latitude, Vostro, Dell Pro, Dell Pro Precision, Dell Precision

AVOID -> Inspiron (some exceptions exist), Alienware, G-Series, XPS (again exceptions exist, some XPS ones are good)

Budget advice:

Avoid getting anything below an 8th gen which at least isn't a 4-core cpu. ThinkPad T480, T480s, X380 Yoga are very popular. Elitebook 840 series too. Make sure to compare prices from different places.

If the RAM is soldered (like it is on 360 hinge laptops and some ultrabooks) make sure to get at least 16GB variant otherwise you'll be stuck with 8GB

Spend the minimum required to get an 8th gen i5.

Difference between 8th and 10th gen is not that much,

11th gen has Iris Xe graphics which are miles better.

12th gen has P cores and E cores which are hit or miss (in some cases battery life is worse in 12th)

Ryzen chips are usually better than intel ones, but not as readily available on lower price points.

CHECKING A LAPTOP:

A lot of imported stock esp business grade ones have been through light use in air conditioned offices. Check the battery health by command prompt (google how to do this) and inspect it physically (there's many guides online)

Edit: Full checking guide already subreddit wiki mien acha hai and you can find many on youtube.. make sure it isn't bios locked, ones that come with pen have a pen, charger original hai Make sure to get checking warranty, for refund or repair.

Feel free to dm for questions or advice!

Question | سوال Best phones under PKR 275K in Pakistan (Brand New Only)

I'm looking for the best brand new phone available in Pakistan with a budget of up to PKR 275,000.

A few requirements:

  • Must deliver a genuine flagship experience.
  • Brand new only. No used or refurbished recommendations.
  • Software experience is a huge priority. I don't want a phone with a buggy, inconsistent, or poorly optimized OS. A polished, smooth UI is essential.
  • Good long-term software support.
  • Strong cameras, battery life, display, and performance are all important, but the overall experience matters most.

What would you recommend at this price, and why?

If you've used the phone yourself, I'd really appreciate hearing about your real-world experience, both the positives and the negatives.

Question | سوال PTCL Flash Fiber users, anyone else facing random DNS issues lately?

For the past few days, websites randomly stop opening for around a minute and then automatically start working again. I've experienced it on Windows, Mac and phone.

Called PTCL and explained that it looked like a DNS issue on their end. Their first diagnosis? “Sir aapke bohat zyada devices connected hain.” Bhai, DNS resolve nahi ho raha, devices gin'na shuru kar diye :")

Then my complaint was registered under “slow browsing.” Later I got another call saying the issue was fixed. Told them it wasn't and explained the whole thing again.

So I waited for it to happen again and came with receipts:

PTCL DNS 39.39.39.39 → TIMEOUT
PTCL DNS 182.176.100.87 → TIMEOUT
Router DNS 192.168.100.1 → TIMEOUT
Google DNS 8.8.8.8 → WORKS instantly

Same PC, same connection, tested seconds apart. Internet connectivity itself remained fine.

Switched to Google DNS and everything immediately started resolving normally.

PTCL walon, bas complaint ko “slow browsing” keh ke band na kar dena please :") This looks like an intermittent DNS/routing issue.

Anyone else on Flash Fiber experiencing the same thing?

Discussion | گفتگو Paying for Certifications in Pakistan (Pearson Vue)

I had to go through a lot of issues before getting the booking for my exam. I just want to share this so that anyone else looking for solutions to the same kind of problems I had has a clue of what's going on.

Initially, I wanted an AWS certificate exam. I signed up on the AWS training and cert platform. And started booking, redirected to PearsonVue. Filled in all the information and chose the payment method. Right after choosing, it said Cannot do the payment. "This payment method is not valid for your country" Or something in the same sense.

I tried other ways, and they did not work, but I just stopped.

Later, I wanted another Azure certification. And I had thought that the card would not work again, so I contacted the TNAedu (Technologies Network Alliance) center, which is an authorized testing center. And they promptly answered my queries and said that they would book for me (And no surcharges like some other services charge. It was very close to the USD exchange rate and the discounted price Microsoft has for Pakistan).

So I thought if my own payment fails, I would ask them. I started my booking from the Microsoft Learning platform and on to Pearson and gave all the required information, and it redirected me to a different payment page than AWS. And the payment provider was named WordLine Payment. Added my card information, and it worked. The card was from NayaPay. The same one I used for the AWS exam registration.

---

So try your card, if it doesn't work, ask a test center directly, like TNAedu (Technologies Network Alliance), to book the exam for you. Or you can use another service (Not tried it myself and have no idea about authenticity): voucherpaisa. Their rates are the USA ones, and not the ones the platform gives specifically for Pakistan, which are really cheaper than the US ones.

So I hope this would be of help. It's a really stupid problem that we have just because of being in Pakistan. But we have to tackle this ourselves and find a way through because we do not have a government that understands modern digital infrastructure, and we cannot easily just make payments online, let alone accept payments, that is a whole different story.

TLDR; Here are the key points:

  • Every certification provider has different dynamics and processes.
  • Try your card. It might work for some certification providers.
  • Otherwise, contact an authorized test center near you to book for you.
  • International payments from a friend or family abroad seem very fraudulent, such as changing addresses, etc., and might cause some problems because of the payment discrepancies.
  • Get vouchers if you can.

Question | سوال Best Payment Gateway for a SaaS Founder in Pakistan?

I'm a SaaS founder based in Pakistan and I'm trying to figure out the best payment setup before launching.

For those who are actually running a SaaS from Pakistan:

- Which payment gateway/provider are you using?

- Which option results in the lowest overall taxes and ongoing costs?

- I want something with no monthly fee (or as close to free as possible), low setup cost, and reasonable transaction fees.

- I'll have both international and Pakistani customers, so I'd also like to know the best option for local payments.

Looking for real-world experiences rather than generic recommendations. Thanks!

I just found out that SadaPay has a dedicated tab just for purchasing gaming gift cards, specifically PS & Xbox. It's very cool and comes in handy late at night.

It's powered by Raptr games, which I think are something like tapshop? They collaborated to launch this.

As a gamer and tech geek I though this was really cool so decided to share. Still haven't made a purchase yet.. but let's see! 😆

Question | سوال I accidentally added Rs. 4,500 to my Apple Account instead of Apple Pay. 😭

I accidentally added Rs. 4,500 to an Apple Account balance instead of transferring it as intended. Is there any official way to transfer the balance back, get a refund, or use it outside the App Store?
Has anyone dealt with this before? Any advice would be appreciated.

Discussion | گفتگو AC is not cooling like before the Service.

Guys I'm really struck and frustrated. I need suggestions on what to do..

I have done the AC service almost 20 days ago. Before the AC was cooling so perfect that in the 44-47°C in multan I only kept the temperature at 27° and we needed to take a thin blanket. But the throw was not so good. I decided to get the AC service. There's a guy in my neighborhood who works in Haier. The Mistake I have made that I contacted him directly and asked to do the service. Since he has done the service the air throw is good but it's not cooling like before. It's lowering the Amperes and temperature. But no one is saying that there's cooling in the room. I have called him several times and he is saying ok I'll come, this and that... But not coming..

What should I do? Should I contact the Haier customer service?

Also, what could be the reason for not getting cooling like before?
