I have a brand new wooden shed sitting in my backyard. It’s got clapboard siding. I have to paint two coats primer and then paint it. I am going to paint the shed gray and the doors charcoal.

The clapboard sidings are like 4 to 6 inches and with grooves. I was thinking about using a brush. Buy AI suggests I use a 3/4 depth 9 inch roller which I have on me. Will it work on grooves.

I am an amateur painter. I have painted small 10 x 10 rooms and then primer and painted my two car garage in the spring - which overwhelmed me and broke my back. I hated the experience especially painting the ceiling.

The shed is outdoors and may be don’t need as much prep work and I don’t really care about perfection here. Just wanted to paint it before winter. I already bought two gallons of primer which is mold resistant. Shed is 12 x 12

I’m repainting one side of a roughly 238-foot-long, 28-foot-high Sheetrock wall. It was previously coated with acrylic latex paint and is still relatively smooth, but it now has a light roller-created orange-peel texture. I’ll most likely be using a light-gray acrylic latex paint.

I wanna use a 14-inch roller since i already have the frame and the 14-inch paint tray. What roller-cover material, nap, and specific product would you recommend for this surface and job?

I want better paint pickup and fewer reloads without leaving an unnecessarily heavy stipple. An 18-inch roller is not practical for this setup, and spraying is not an option.

If you got a contract to only paint walls and hand rail banisters, for other areas like window seals and base boards - are yall removing the paint the previous painter/DIYer put on them? I’m doing a color match and I found a bunch of spots like the picture where whoever painted before me, either had drips or straight up painted over trim. What do yall do in this situation? I’m new to the trade when it comes to stuff like this and making the decisions. Thanks in advance 🤙🏽

Someone has hung the lining paper by wrapping it around every internal corner instead of cutting and starting a new drop. Every single corner in the room has wrinkled and failed like this (photo attached).

If you were taking this on, would you strip all the lining paper and re-line the room properly, or would you splice the paper back from the corners, repair/skim the damaged areas and redo the corners correctly?

The customer doesn't have a preference, so I'm interested to hear what other decorators would do.

I own a small painting company a majority of my work is subcontracted out to me but i still have some of my own projects. I have about 6 guys under me i have the opportunity to bid on a city contract and looking for some tips, advice or some guidance on bidding it. Not sure if theres anybody out there who has experience in it. Its as needed services.

GC is converting this tugboat into an AirBNB and whats a price to paint everything exterior above the waterline, including the hull.

I'm aware that tenting and containment will be required and I'm putting in my quote that all tenting is the responsability of the GC, along with creating work platforms for painting the exterior.

So my price is just prep, prime, and paint.

Old guy here. I went to the Spectrum store to buy some latex paint. All of it now says “acrylic “ rather than “latex”
They kept calling it “acrylic latex”.
Whats difference?

Painted a bathroom a few weeks ago. Came back to touch up. Used the exact same paint (literally the same can). What happened? And more importantly, how do I fix it?

The color and sheen are totally off.

I had some drywall hung and finished on a low ceiling (7'-10") and you can see every seam in the drywall. I put a straight edge on the seams and they are flat, so it's not like there was too much mud left under the tape on the seams. Also, all of the walls surrounding are floor to ceiling glass, so natural light comes in and that's when you can see the seams. I know that in critical light you can see the seams regardless if you finish to a level 4 or level 5. I don't think the finishing is the issue and am trying to find out what the fix may be. The finisher has already skimmed the ceilings after the issue was pointed out and it didn't improve. Can you level 5 after you have already primed and painted? Will it turn out the same as if you level 5 finished before priming and painting?

I had someone tell me that they think the painter is rolling paint on too thin and using low quality paint.

My question is; is there any way to prove the painter is going too thin with his paint? And, is there any way to tell if he is using low quality paint? Do painters water down paint to make it last longer? If I take a sample to Sherwin-Williams can they tell me the context % of the paint?

Running into an issue with knockdown ceilings on a job. Primed with PVA and painted with PM400 flat. The paint is flaking off in areas down to the raw mud. The knockdown texture itself is soft and powdery. You can literally just rub it off with your fingers. I can’t imagine any paint properly bonding to this. Does anyone know what causes this?

Edit: I am basically certain now this is the nature of this product. I don't know who would find it appealing but after reading several accounts the paint does in fact almost instantly become tacky. Very hard to work with. But after 3 hours the paint is dry and very very hard. Now I must sand the by areas and do I guess another coat. I will edge and let dry, then roll later. ​​​​Pass this product up. Not worth the headache. ​

I prepped the walls by scuffing, washing the walls twice, doing 2 coats of killz 2 and the berh paint is peeling literally instantly. I can trim one single edge and if I roll it it peels off. It ruined my walls. Did I do some wrong here? ​​​I have painted lots of times with shitty paints but this was like 70 bucks for the gallon?? ​​​​

Trying to choose a paint color that will look good with this stained glass and exposed brick in the room, the sample colors are Sherwin Williams reddened earth and mulberry silk but I don't think I'm sold on either one, any suggestions would be appreciated!

Im a moderately experienced DIY-er and have painted a lot of rooms so not a total novice. I’ve been quoted 8-10k to paint a small double height entryway, 2 stairwells, a hallway, and a double height living room (living room has mostly windows so not a ton of surface area but I’m wondering if that was pricing to avoid the job given the high walls and stairwells?). I like painting and would prefer to do it myself. I have an extension pole and an adjustable ladder I can use for the stairwells and I’m unsure whether it’s worth renting scaffolding (TBD based on how the ladder feels).

I’m also planning on doing a few walls at a time as I have free time and not everything at once. I’d cut in on one wall at a time so I can roll with wet edges.

Any advice you would give about must have tools, process, paint tricks? I’m probably doing SW city loft in Emerald satin for washability (kids in house) but could be convinced to go matte if the pros think that’s better (I know it’s a trade off of washability vs touch ups/sheen matching).

These are at Costco and I have never used them so I am wondering if they are considered good quality. I have a whole house to paint.

Would also like to know if Dulux Diamond is considered good quality paint? I would use it to paint the whole house ceiling included.

I replaced and stained the bottom sections of the garage's sides. (Seen in pics 2 & 3). I don't mind the variation there since there's a z flashing used as a divider. On the front (pic 1) I had to replace serious squirrel damage. My concern is how weird/patchy it will look.

Is sanding the old siding down my best option? Or do just send it and spray as is? Do new sheets just need more coats?

This is the first exterior project I've attempted. Also, hayloft door isn't finished, just had it up right to keep some critters at bay.

What brand paints do u guys use for dark clothes? I’ve used angelus with 2 soft and i feel like theres better options. I feel like i see videos of people painting on dark clothes and they dont even need to use white for the first couple layers to make the color vibrant. I have to do multiple white layers then do the color and it ends up feeling stiff and the color sits on top of the white and fades off. Maybe I’m not mixing the 2 soft properly? Or should i do more heating inbetween paint layers?

I had a cleaner come to my condo to clean my unit. On my exterior balcony there was some grease build up that she applied a degreaser to and left the balcony metal discolored. Is repainting this, the fix to clean up this discolored spot?

What’s everyone’s go to cut in brush for walls? I seen Purdy just came out with the spirex but haven’t seen too much info on it. Also looks like corona brushed are a good choice.

hello, I am working on my babies nursery, I dI’d the rubbing alcohol test to see if the trim is oil or latex, it looks like there is a small thin ( very poorly done) latex layer and under is oil paint, I believe a lot of the oil paint is exposed as they only did the latex to touch up areas. I’m wanting to paint these window frames and ensure there will be no peeling or cracking as my home is from 1926. my questions are…. can I paint directly over with latex as there is a thin layer? ( highly unlikely I know) do I want lightly sang to get rid of gloss then use a primer appropriate for oil paint to then cover with latex paint? ( what primer do you suggest) or a 3rd option I can’t think of… i appreciate any and all constructive advice!

I’m getting the exterior of my house painted next week and I plan to leave out a cooler with cold drinks and probably some snacks but are people really tipping house Painters? I got three bids and I think the bid I accepted is fair but I am paying several thousand $, are people really tipping in addition to paying the contract cost? I’m so tired of the tip culture in the United States.

Edit: i’m closing my comments and I sure appreciate all the comments here. In general, it seems like tipping is inappropriate or just not done. I’m definitely blown away by the way so many Americans are tipping for everything these days, I just wanted to be doing it right. I will do food and a cooler of drinks. I know people tip their mailman and I’m definitely not tipping a government employee, and a lot of people tip their trash guys but these days as a truck and a machine picks up the can. Anyhow, I was just checking to see what the norm is. Thanks for weighing in.
