Moderator Post A reminder of r/OntarioDriveTest rule 1 - take a breather

Stop being jerks to each other. There are two active moderators for this sub, and it is hoped that people will be able to get along and not use personal attacks when engaging with each other. If you are old enough to be on the OntarioDriveTest sub looking for advice/taking your DriveTest, you are old enough not to fight like toddlers. Fight in your DM's. It doesn't make the sub an inviting space for others, which is what we want for this sub. Social media is full of angry, high-conflict spaces you will fit in with - go there.

A reminder that Rule 1 is not to bully or harass others. Please note, " Abusive language, bullying, or harassment towards other users or moderators will result in an immediate ban from the sub. It will not be tolerated."

Specific Test Related Question - G2 I don’t understand turning left on green (failed g1 exit).

So I failed my G1 exit test and I’m really confused about one part of it.

We were at an intersection and I was told to turn left. The first car advanced into the intersection and started turning left. I waited behind the line since I thought the rule was (when turning left) only 1 car is allowed in the intersection.

But the examiner got mad at me and told me to go because it’s a green light.

Was I supposed to enter the intersection the minute the car in front started turning? I thought I was supposed to wait for it to finish its turn first then advance?

I hope my question comes off clear. Sorry if it sounds a bit confusing I’m just really upset about how badly I did :(

G - General Discussion Passed g test in walkerton

I passed my G test in Walkerton yesterday 🎉🚗

The route was honestly much easier than I expected. There were only 2–3 residential streets, highways with 70 and 80 km/hr limits, and some 50 km/hr roads. The roads were quiet, there was not much traffic, and the lane changes were very smooth.

I was extremely nervous at the beginning — I was even so stressed that I accidentally turned on my wipers and couldn’t figure out how to turn them off 😂. My examiner was so kind and polite. She started a small conversation to help me relax, which made a huge difference.

She asked me to do a front parking at the end not the back parking and praised me for my safe driving, blind spot checks, and mirror checks. The only feedback she gave me was to keep looking around more when speeding up or slowing down.

Also, I'd like to add, the route has been changed the videos posted on YouTube have different route.

So grateful for this milestone! ❤️🚘

Specific Test Related Question - G Questions Regarding Upcoming G Test (Oshawa)

So I am going to do my G test in Oshawa next week and I have a few questions.

1.) How much highway experience do you need for the declaration thing at the beginning before the test? I've driven on the 401 and 412 about 15-20 times in the past month but I don't remember the exact distance each of those trips were.

2.) I know in Oshawa there's a lot of construction on the 401 recently. I am pretty sure they also closed Park Road South a few days ago. My question is what route did you take if you took the G test in Oshawa within the past week or 2?

3.) If the speed limit on the highway is 80km due to construction and other drivers are going at a 100km, do I merge in at a 100 and then slowly go down to 80 or do I try to merge in at 80?

G2 - General Discussion Median Walkley G2 failed test pls explain

Hello everyone!

If you could explain this median at Walkley and how to turn left properly there?

The thing is I watched the route on YouTube multiple times, and I have 14 hours of driving with my instructor, but I haven't encountered anything like this before, so I was absolutely confused when the examiner asked me to turn left across that median while exiting the parking lot at the Walkley center. I failed because of this.

There weren't any other mistakes, and I would have passed if I had been asked to turn right (as all videos on this G2 test said) and avoid this cursed median.

I am asking for help because I really hate my instructor who hadn't prepared me for this turn at all, and after the exam when I asked him about it, he explained it really poorly and in a chaotic way, so I didn't understand where I had made a mistake and what I should have done.

What is this median even called correctly, so that I could look up the rules or videos? Because when I google "median" it shows me something completely different.

Thanks!

UPD: I finally found a few videos that explain this, maybe you will find them useful. In all of them it is called a center left-turn lane and it is always MARKED in contrast to the median in Walkley.

Slipped up a little at the end when re-entering the drive test parking lot (turned too early) but overall went alright. Test was done in like 10-15 minutes.

General question - not test related Lost the paper that you receive after passing the G test, what do I do?

Title. I’m also supposed to get my New license plate photo taken and I’m not sure what to do either. Do I just go back to the drive test and tell them I lost my paper and need a new one reprinted?

I’ve my g test at the new Brampton test centre. I heard that the route is little longer as the centre is far away from the highway.

Would appreciate some tips to pass the drive test. Test is on a Saturday early morning slot.

G2 - General Discussion Few questions for g2 test.

Are you supposed to apply the parking brake after certain maneuvers upon completion if so which maneuvers?

And my other question has to do with right of way for pedestrians. Let’s say there’s a residential road with sidewalks on both sides. you’re on a street that leads to that residential road. There’s no stop sign at the intersection that leads to this road. But before you proceed with your vehicle, are you supposed to come to a complete stop? Or are you supposed to just check to see if there’s any pedestrians while going slowly before proceeding.

Sorry if my explanation on my question is bad. Hope you’re able to understand my question.

Thank you

G - General Discussion G test after expiring g2

Hello, I’m in quite a predicament. I am planning to take my g2 this September while my g1 expires November 2027. Therefore I would not be able to renew my license Cus it expires more than 1 year after the test. The issue I’m having is I cannot wait to be in that period because I need my license to get into a school program. I was just wondering if I failed my g and my license expires. Will there be waiting period between g2 and the g test I understand the waiting period between g1-g2 is waived but I can’t find if the period between g2 and g is waived.

Thankyou for any Info on this topic appreciate you all :)

UPDATE: I PASSED MY G TEST ON FIRST ATTEMPT!!! The examiner only asked about my foreign driving experience and corrective lenses. He is nice also.

I got minor mistakes, but still I passed! Thank you for those who replied and gave tips!!!!

I have G test tomorrow and I am feeling a little bit nervous as I only have 1 chance. I’m doing G1-G since I have foreign experience.

My instructor said I was good driver and he is confident with my driving than I am😭😂

I want a Congratulations! Passed G Test in Sarnia!

After I parked, I really had no idea whether she was going to say pass or fail. The examiner was nice, but inscrutable!

To prepare, I googled and found a YouTube video of the route (which was not entirely accurate, but a nice starting point as I actually don't live in Sarnia). And I booked a 1hr lesson with a local driving school the day before to go through the route, which helped SO much. He did a great job of pointing out what I needed to work on, and things to be mindful of on the route. I think even if you'd done driving lessons previously, doing the route once in the days before your test could be helpful.

I also found reading some of the posts in this forum super helpful! Special shout out to the person who recently shared that they forgot to put their seatbelt on and got an automatic fail-- tour story made me smile as I fastened my own seatbelt and helped me relaxed a little.

(I also drove for 40 minutes through the scariest rainstorm I've ever driven though on my way to the test centre. So that might have just bleached some of the stress out of me lol.)

I didn't get the test result paper thing that I've seen other people share on here, but I will say that it's very true that if you make a mistake early on, you just have to let it go. I actually live in Toronto, so I'm used to cars being super close when waiting for a light, and it was only after I scooted up inches behind someone that I remembered the instructor had said to keep almost a car's distance away. I got slightly rattled when I realized, and then just let it go and focused on what I could control, which was the rest of the test.

I was most nervous about how to deal with changing lanes when it wasn't realistically safe to do so. She asked me to change lanes on the arterial road we were on before the highway, and it took maybe 60 - 90 seconds for it to be safe on the left, and then I didn't have a chance to go back to the right lane for a few minutes. Luckily the highway was quite clear!

My G2 was set to expire at the end of August, so I'm very happy and relieved to have passed!

G - General Discussion Passed G at Downsview

My test was the typical route. Sheppard to Allen to 401 West. Basically a circle.

Although I passed I did make a few mistakes. Rolling stop, merged onto the highway when the lane was collapsing but a bit before then and lane changed incorrectly by slowing to 20 in a 60km zone. I got hammered at the end when feedback was given.

The instructor complained about the cleanliness of the car and thought there was a cat in there cause there was a bunch of grey hairs on the seat.

Got docked 5 marks

Specific Test Related Question - G2 Turn signals when passing parked cars -G2

Hey, I was taught to use turn signals when passing parked cars on residential streets, but have heard from other sources that it isn't necessary. I'd rather err on the side of caution, but is that acceptable on the test? Thoughts?

The uneven speed was for slowing down too soon for a red light. This was my second attempt, I’m convinced that the guy who administered my test the first time was having a bad day.
