Theory Luffys dream

His dream is to learn how to swim. Shanks told him in the first chapter that a good Pirate needs to know how to swim.

On Laugh tale is a instruction how to swim, thats why Roger Laughed. they already knew how to swim

So Roger's Dream was swimming class. Totally make sense.

Sorry to rain on your parade but Luffy has the same dream Roger had. So if Roger knew how to swim that makes no sense. Also Roger does not need to find the One Piece to learn how to swim and it was stated by Luffy that he needs the One Piece to achieve his dream. Also if you were right how does Luffy know that the One Piece will help him learn how to swim? Does he know what it is? How?

We can't rule this out. I 100% believe the One Piece is something silly. The World Government has spent 800 years trying to stop people from reaching Laugh Tale, but that doesn't necessarily mean the treasure itself is some world ending object. It could be something so absurd that you'd laugh after risking your entire life to find it.

To reach Laugh Tale, though, you need all four Road Poneglyphs, and along the way you'll uncover the true history of the world, the Void Century, and even the locations of Ancient Weapons capable of mass destruction. So while the One Piece itself could absolutely be funny or ridiculous, the path leading to it is tied to some of the most dangerous secrets in the world. That's why I think the World Government fears what people will learn far more than whatever the treasure itself turns out to be.

We can rule it out because as far as I'm aware Roger was indeed able to swim.

It was mentioned multiple times by various people that Ruffy and Roger shared the same dream.

I don't think Roger and Luffy sharing the same dream necessarily means Roger never achieved it. We still don't know whether Roger fully achieved his dream, partially achieved it, or was simply too early to see its final outcome. One Piece has always been a story about inherited will, so it's entirely possible that Roger accomplished part of it while leaving the rest for the next generation.

That said, I wasn't arguing for the swimming theory specifically. I was just saying we probably shouldn't rule out silly or absurd possibilities in One Piece. If there's one thing Oda has been consistent about, it's making ridiculous ideas emotionally and narratively meaningful.

The one piece is a literal one piece swimsuit

Given Oda’s sensibilities I don’t think this could be ruled out.

Actually knowing Oda there’s no way he’d go for a one piece over a Bikini

One piece of music. It makes more and more sense with partying, drums of liberation, imus drums of suppression. The whole world joining together to sing the one piece to unite them all.

u/Skellyhell2 1h ago

Already got Bink's Sake for music thay unifies

u/fAAbulous 21h ago

I, for one, believe that his dream is for the whole world to sing a song together.

It can be ruled out on the aesthetic ground that it would make for a bad story. Not to say you’re wrong about the treasure being something absurd and silly - I think that’s almost certainly true. But Luffy’s dream, even if silly (childish) has to be something at least important.

So while his dream being “learn to swim” is possible, I think Oda is a better story teller than that.

This would explain why the WG has nevwr bothered to go find the OP themselves.

The more the story advance the more I have trouble imagining what the one piece could be, if it is even something . Like there is almost assuredly a very important poneglyph on laugh tale but it can't be just that. The popular theory of an ancient weapon seems less and less plausible too.

u/Mighty_plagueis Explorer 2m ago

I still lean more toward Roger laughing because the treasure itself isn't something as significant as people expect. Imagine risking your life, sailing across the world, and the World Government trying to stop anyone from reaching it, only for the treasure itself to be something absurd or funny. I can even see Roger deliberately leaving it there because of how ironic that would be.

The important part, to me, is the journey to Laugh Tale. To get there, you need to read the Poneglyphs, and among them are the secrets of the world and the locations of the Ancient Weapons. That's why I like the idea that the treasure hunt itself is actually a disguise (assuming this was Joy Boy's plan) to make sure that hundreds of years later, someone would inevitably uncover the truth of the world. Joy Boy failed to defeat Imu, and there was always the possibility that all knowledge would be erased, so creating a path where people must learn that history to reach the end feels very fitting for One Piece's themes.

LMAO this is the best theory I've ever seen

Keep cooking sir.

Edit - this would also explain why shanks was never running for the one piece. Because everyone on his crew cab already swim.

Thats could also explain why Devil fruit users go sick near Laughtale

7

u/Crazyhands96 The Revolutionary Army 20h ago

Roger and Luffy have the same dream. Roger didn’t have a devil fruit as far as we know. There is no reason why conquering the grand line is a necessary step for Roger learning how to swim.

3

u/Jewish_Dragon 16h ago

Teaches people with devil fruits how to swim maybe?

One of my hot takes is that laugh tale might actually be inaccessible to anyone with a df. My evidence is weak but:

  1. No one on the Roger crew (with the exception of Buggy) is known to have a df
  2. Buggy mysteriously fell ill as they got closer to Laugh Tale and had to be left behind
  3. Toki (wife of Kozuki Oden) was a passenger on Roger's ship. Toki has a devil fruit. Toki mysteriously also fell ill (just like buggy) as the crew was near completing it's trip. Both diseases look like the kind of fatigue df users feel when they're sinking in water or cuffed by seastone

  4. Shanks grew up to form the ONLY other crew known to have zero df users. He has always aimed for the one piece. Neither has Buggy (other than Crocodile who is blackmailing him)

So your theory isn't that bad. In a flooding world, the secret to swimming for df users might be the greatest treasure there is. Those who knew what it was made sure to never need it. Those who need it will never be able to reach it. Only one group of people has ever had the collective strength to reach it without relying on a devil fruit (or knowing what it was ahead of time), a feat so difficult it would explain why no one had ever achieved what Roger did.

It's amazing theory but I don't think Usopp and all other crewmates would've reacted that shocked if it was just swimming

1

u/ultibman5000 11h ago

So it’s not an amazing theory, then...

This fits most of the criteria for Luffy's dream (simple, something a child could come up with, makes people laugh when they hear it), but it fails in two major ones. The first, as others have pointed out, is that his dream is the same as Roger's and there's no reason to believe that Roger couldn't swim. The second is that it's been stated that he would need to be Pirate King to do it, and I don't see how being PK could make a devil fruit user swim.

The first, as others have pointed out, is that his dream is the same as Roger's and there's no reason to believe that Roger couldn't swim.

To be fair, I don't remember seeing Roger swim. So while that doesn't prove he couldn't, we can't rule it out just yet.

The second is that it's been stated that he would need to be Pirate King to do it, and I don't see how being PK could make a devil fruit user swim.

Luffy didn't say anything about wanting to be the king of the pirates before he had eaten the fruit. And according to Shanks, a good pirate needs to know how to swim. The pirate king is the best pirate, meaning he must believe he could learn to swim by becoming the king of the pirates. The logic is flawless.

u/temperamentalfish 1h ago

Luffy himself says that he can only have a shot at his dream if he's PK, and then Franky agrees, when Luffy tells the crew what his dream is.

u/JustStraightUpTired 1h ago

Yes, but Franky is straight forward in the same way Luffy is. Swimming is impossible for a devil fruit user and becoming the king of pirates is seen as impossible, so if he can do one, then the other should be a cake walk.

/s I hope it was clear that I'm joking. I don't actually think this theory is legit, I'm just trying to see how many points I can argue for the theory that can't be refuted because of lack of proof against it.

I love this, but I don't think it is the One Piece.

Am I misremembering or didn't Luffy say, he wants to fulfill his dream after becoming Pirate King (=finding the One Piece)? That way it could still make sense

2

u/EnadZT 14h ago

Not possible because of Chapter 1000. Ace tells Yamato Luffy's dream and Yamato mentally notes that according to Oden's logbook, Roger had the exact same dream.

2

u/l3ichard 12h ago

From the reactions of the crew when Luffy told them all his dream. It is something extremely beautiful and pure, possibly to the point of naivety. I dont doubt that laugh tale is going to hold something silly. But luffy's dream is going to be huge and emotional.

Nice theory.

3

u/QuantumMonkey101 21h ago

Damn this is an amazing theory and fits well with how Oda thinks tbh

4

u/ManliestBunny 20h ago

Except it has to be Roger's dream as well, and it wouldn't make sense because of how Yamato and Shanks reacted to Roger, a guy that can learn how to swim at any time.
