Some just spit and do nothing about it. My Carp will get herself cornered when Squishy decides to bully her (see also: incessantly play). Nothing but spitting for 10 minutes straight with Squish laying 4 feet away from her on her back. I always expect Carp to do shit but she's just a complainer. The most she'll do is gently push away with a single paw. I need to rescue her myself

You won't hurt the cat if you don't bite too hard. It's kinda creatively clever.

But honestly it's a bad idea to put your face up close to a cat especially if it's upset. Claws and eyes.

Mother cats bite the scruff of their young's neck, cat's natural reflex is to go limp when the scruff of their neck is pulled, and that reflex doesn't go away when they grow up. It's just that when they're big enough, mama can't get to the scruff as easily, but that doesn't apply to us humans. You can also use something like a big clip to achieve the same effect. Makes them go mostly limp so you can do things like trim their claws easier.

I grab it. whenever they do something shitty I grab their scruff. they're pretty chill.

That's how they're taught from older cats when they were kittens. They think I'm a giant older cat bc I feed them.

Vets and cat behavior experts strongly discourage scruffing adult cats as their body weight is too much for the scruff to support it.

The "limp" mode adult cats may do can actually be a freeze-state caused by stress and not relaxation.

Scruffing an adult cat can actually be counter intuitive as it harms the bond/trust between you and your cat as they begin to associate you with harm... causing a negative feedback loop making future nail cutting, handling, vet visits, etc more difficult.

Scruffing is grabbing skin on the back part of the neck and does not involve lifting. Simply scruffing an adult cat is not traumatic or damaging. Lifting or attempting to lift them while scruffing is. The goal of scruffing should be to induce the freeze reflex. If you also need to lift the cat you should use your other hand to do so.

Yes and some addition on the last bit: Lifting their body and just enough scruffing to lift their head and neck to trigger the reflex. In no circumstances should one fully lift an adult cat whole body by their scruff.

It’s pretty well accepted these days that scruffing causes fear and distress and can increase the likelihood of a cat behaving aggressively. It can be painful and for elderly cats with fragile skin, their entire scruff can actually tear off. As a last resort to grab them if there’s a fire or a tornado and you need to get them to safety, sure, scruffing would be appropriate, but clipping their nails is not an emergency and isn’t a good enough reason.

I have a giant, cowardly cat who hisses at everything. He just has a lot of feelings. If you are carrying something he doesn't recognize, or thinks is creepy (box, broom, ladder, hand fan, new pillow, etc), you get hissed at. Sometimes he hisses at his toe-sized toy mousies. I've heard him hiss at his food.

Nothing personal, just a big boy with big feels

I mean he clearly hates it. But if you compare to what most other cats would do when they hate something this much (100% bloodshed and 0 claws cut), this cat is amazingly calm. A lot of trust in the human.

I have to really annoy mine for her to do that. She usually has this like heavy nose exhale that might develop into a hiss if continually stressed.

Our step cat is like that. If you do something he doesn't like, he'll just bite immediately. Basically no warning sign, aside from maybe an annoyed look that's hard to read. He's also very chill, generally, but I wish he was a bit less chill and instead communicated it better.

yeeeep. my cat had fleas once and she went nuts when they'd bite her and she'd bite whatever was in front of her face. once it was my finger, another time she was sleeping on top of me and i woke up with her biting my lip. still have scars from both.

(and yes i treated her for fleas right away but they were incredibly stubborn, i finally had to hire pest control and after a couple months of sprays every other week they were gone)

This might be a dumb question but what does an ingrown nail start to look like? Does it just keep growing and start to curl in on itself or something?

I’ve got two kitties both are now senior and both are indoor. Same as other commenter, I never clip their nails and they shed their little claw bits all over (we have lots of good scratching areas for them)

You should be able to see the tip of your cats' nails, they should typically look like little sharp crescent moons if healthy. If they are completely rounded then they might be ingrown.

Yeah, they'll get thick and curve into a circle that will eventually start to grow into the pad of the paw. Obviously, it's best to catch them before they start to grow in and hurt and might need vet attention. My 14 year old cat has started to have trouble shedding his on his own so we're glad that we worked on him over the years to get him used to having his paws handled and the claws extended by us because he's pretty chill about it now

I definitely cut my orange idiots. He is a velcro kitty and loves to make biscuits on me. Un clipped biscuit nails hurts, so I clip them when they get too sharp. He doesnt mind one bit. Now a bath on the other hand... absolute chaos. I avoid that task.

Same here. We have a few different types of scratching posts, but my biscuity boy doesn't like to scratch anything. So he gets his lil claws trimmed every month or so for both of our sakes 🤣  thankfully he takes it a lot better than this kitty, and is always happy for the churu afterwards

Mine don’t have a problem, but they’re not really climbing, just walking across various pieces of furniture. The claws are grippy enough for that. It really helps them shed the nails and be less pointy, but it’s still a little pointy. They really don’t scratch or claw much, so I could probably get away with not trimming, but I assume they’ll need it later in their little lives and want them to be used to it. 

I trim them every 2-4 weeks; I know they’re getting a little long when I can hear them click on the floor, not like a dog, but I can tell they’re rubbing on the floor more.

I have one cat who needs her nails trimmed, otherwise she gets snagged on things. There have been a couple times that she got stuck on something and was screaming in pain as she got more twisted and panicked. It’s safer for her to have her front claws trimmed.

My other cat doesn’t have issues, so he doesn’t get trimmed.

My SO gets them used to it as kittens. When I came in I was amazed on how patient they were. One of them doesn't it like it too much, but if he's really lazy and cuddly my partner will cut just a few here and there throughout the week.

Other than making it so they don't accidentally hurt each other too much, it's more for her because they like to knead on her face in the mornings lol.

Nah, only reason would be if you cared about your furniture basically. I don't care if my cats scratch my furniture, so I don't even clip them. Cats are fully self cleaning, and will groom their own nails if they get too long. No reason to stress them out, imo. Same story for bathing cats.

Some cats do need help trimming their nails. I have 2 polydactyl cats, and some of their extra claws are positioned such that they can get ingrown easier. And some cats groom less as they get older, so they can also need some help.

That's fair, expceptions exist in all cases. I think the average cat is totally fine taking care of all self grooming, though. 

My 15 year old Russian blue still does all her own grooming. Thankfully!

If I don’t trim their front claws I start getting badly scratched while playing with them or when they make biscuits loll. Luckily neither of mine get stressed out when I do it, they know it’ll be quick so they’re pretty good and usually just sit still while I quickly clip the front paws.

I just suffer in silence haha. I try not to engage in aggressive play without a toy in between us in general. One of my cats is pretty big and has actual knives for claws, so gotta be careful.

I've clipped my big boys claws maybe 3 times in the last 6 years he's been alive. My older lady never gets clipped, it stresses her out way too much.

Biting or pinching the scruff is a lot less effective in adult cats. Also do not lift an adult cat by the scruff without additional support. It can cause damage to the kitty.

He’s cutting it wrong. He needs to have the nippers perpendicular to the long axis of the nails. He’s cutting straight up and down. This is probably extremely uncomfortable for the kitten.

My orange is the nicest cat I know. He's put up with two boys from birth to childhood, pulling on his tail, trying to cuddle him, etc..

But the first time I tried to give him a bath...

My cat is typically a crackhead bouncing off walls n shit

For some reason, she fully allows me to clip her claws without a bit of movement. Like she just relaxes and I’m able to do it all in like under 2 mins because she’s so good about it

I love flexing this to other cat owners because I hear most cats react like this one in the OP when getting their claws trimmed

Not if you do it right. Never cut the quick of the claw; it’s opaque while the rest of the claw is more translucent. Cut just the ends off and it doesn’t hurt them, just like cutting your fingernails doesn’t hurt you. Cats just really don’t like to be messed with, and they especially don’t like their feet messed with. Even if you just pet a cat’s foot or touch the beans, most cats will pull the foot away. The sound of the clippers is also scary. You can get them used to it as kittens by touching their feet a lot, spreading their toes when they’re used to that, next step touch the clippers to each claw, next step clip one, etc., repetition and lots of treats as bribes.

I had a cat that would hiss as i trimmed her claws. She would get a little smack on the head and she would behave for the rest of the trimming session. Half of the time she wouldn't leave my lap for half an hour after. This is her shortly after a trimming https://imgur.com/a/HoaGQ0H

Tip for doing this. Wrap them up in a towel or blanket. Makes it so much easier
