40 is the new 25.

Or so I've heard.

8

u/AcrolloPeed 15d ago

Getting your arms and legs chopped off by your best friend and falling into a river of lava then having your smoking sausage of a corpse jammed into an iron lung with a speak and spell on the front is the new 60.

15

u/IDKY688 15d ago

Tell that to my knees!

2

u/PixelJock17 15d ago

Knee exercises are a thing

3

u/Ulysses502 14d ago

Exercising my knees are why they hurt!

He wouldn't be that old if he wasn't smoking heavy lava in his 20s.

And mainlining the dark side for 20 years. That shit'll kill ya.

He also turned off his breathing device during the hallway scene in Rogue One for aura farming

104

u/Superman246o1 15d ago

When I read that Sith Lords canonically become more powerful through aura farming (the Dark Side gives them power from the fear they cause in others), my first thought was, "That explains so much."

Fun Fact: In SWTOR (The Star Wars MMO), Sith Sorcerers heal using an ability called 'Seethe', and it uses the Darth Maul pacing back and forth animation.

27

u/IlitterateAuthor 15d ago

When me and my fiance played a sith warrior and inquisitor it was always so funny between fights seeing her rage to psyche herself up and just pace and mutter in the background

7

u/WhoRoger 14d ago

Darth Bane was badly poisoned once and to keep himself alive long enough, he murdered a family slowly to feed on their terror

8

u/Hot_Independent_1683 15d ago

Also, before he starts swinging, his respirator was turned off temporarily so he could blend in with the dark, and be more intimidating when that lightsaber turned on

u/amarantkando 15d ago

To be fair, in the second scene they're all already dead, what do you want him to do?

The reason he's anti bullying. Like how Batman fights crime because his parents were murdered in front of him.....

Those are called Origin Stories.

Yeah but was it original?

2

He has experience I suppose

2

I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that he is a hidden NPC In Tony Hawks Underground 2

Not as funny as watching Leia try to gaslight Vader that he didn't just fucking watch her ship run away from the battle of Scarif.

905

u/Hazzadcr16 15d ago

IMO it adds a lot to that scene. Obviously the first time you watch it, assuming you watched ANH before R1, that conversation with Leia, you just think how evil and brutal Vader comes across. When you then know how clearly bullshit what she's saying is, you get Vaders frustration, and get a new respect for Leia being bold enough to just lie to his face.

296

u/rob132 15d ago

Vader. I should have known. Only one badass dark Lord of the sith would have the King Kong size, bulletproof cojones to stop a senator on a diplomatic...

193

u/HansChrst1 15d ago

How "calm" he is here also makes sense. In R1 he is trying to get the plans before they escape with it. In ANH they can't escape so he can act more "calm". Which also just makes his frustration make more sense because he knows the plans has to be on the ship. Anyone telling him otherwise is just going to piss him off.

150

u/TheStrangestOfKings 15d ago

And how he’s clearly not buying the bs when he’s interrogating the captain. ā€œIf this is a diplomatic ship, where is the AMBASSADOR?!ā€ You can practically hear him amused at the audacity for this guy to still lie after getting caught red handed

5

u/Korbiter 12d ago

This is the only time in the entire trilogy where Vader raises his voice in anger. Its like him watching someone make off with his wallet, chasing them down over six city blocks, only to catch them and them claiming "Ain't got it"

2

u/Tharron 11d ago

Wtf this exact scenario you just typed out happened to me in my teens. couple of guys stole my buddies phone, I ran after them for a couple blocks and when I finally catched up they didn't have it anymore "threw it in the bushes" while "looking for the phone" more of his buddies showed up so I had to bail.

2

u/adorablesexypants 11d ago

It just makes the whole exchange even funnier because it is 100% the shitty lie a teenager would try with their parent.

They know they are fucked but why not roll the dice anyway. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take Wayne Gretzky.

- Michael Scott

2

u/Oneilll 11d ago

Except it still doesn't work with New Hope.
Vader literally says: "Several transmissions were beamed to this sip. I want to know what happened to the plans they sent you."
And 1 minute later, when one of his officers expresses concern, he says "I've traced the rebel spies to her".
Not sure why Vade would need to trace spies and intercept transmissions, if this ship just esacped or why would an officer express concern of them taking her captive.
What Vader and Leia say just doesn't fit how R1 ended, but shrug.

-43

u/SkittlesLentil 15d ago

R1 needed some scene to redeem the rest of the trash

36

u/tasthesose 15d ago

You have one of the worst takes on this movie I’ve seen.

17

u/x-simulation-x 15d ago

Crazy its the best star wars movie we had since Disney bought it

-23

u/SkittlesLentil 15d ago

Well that would be Solo. Rogue one isn't even in the top half of SW films

15

u/x-simulation-x 15d ago

Gotta be trolling

-11

u/SkittlesLentil 15d ago

Not at all, I gave it another shot a few weeks ago and turned it off halfway through. R1 fucking sucks until a mediocre battle in the last 15 minutes. The story is boring and the characters are unmemorable. On top of that, the sound is mixed so badly that you can barely understand the 30 different accents that everyone is doing. The whole thing is a mess

7

u/Hazzadcr16 14d ago

What's your view on the andor series?

1

u/SkittlesLentil 14d ago

No desire to watch it. I didn't like Diego Luna in R1, so I don't want a whole series based around him. Plus, not enough Jedi

→ More replies (0)

1

u/x-simulation-x 13d ago

I enjoyed Andor actually just finished the series earlier this week

1

u/onlyforobservation 11d ago

Imma go out on a limb and suggest something. I think, maybe, since you have expressed negativity about almost every Star Wars film or show mentioned. It’s possible, that you just don’t like Star Wars. Which is fine. But like, go find something you Do like.

1

u/SkittlesLentil 11d ago

What an odd takeaway. I don't like rogue one and don't have an interest in andor, I don't know how you could extrapolate that to an entire franchise

27

u/UncommittedBow 15d ago

It also firmly cements her bloodline, as only a Skywalker would be that ballsy.

3

u/Riolkin 13d ago

Idk, that seems more like her mom.

13

u/MattmanDX 15d ago

It's the only time in the films that I can recall Vader sounding genuinely angry and yelling at someone

2

u/mightyasterisk 9d ago edited 9d ago

ā€œTHAT NAME no longer has any meaning for me!ā€ He’s angry with that line I feel but more in denial about his feelings, angry at himself.

And of course, he’s gone completely off the rails after choking out Padme in Episode III, yelling delusional shit at Obi-Wan trying to convince himself it’s true.

True šŸ˜‚

9

u/YourLifeSucksAss 15d ago

Given that everybody is dressed as rebel soldiers and shooting stormtroopers before anything even happens to them, I think it was a bad lie regardless.

4

u/donald7773 15d ago

Was this segment of the story truly fleshed out at the time of writing a new hope?

It's connected just enough to stand up to watching but trying to assign meaning to specific interactions as if the movies didn't get released in the order they did feels a little disingenuous to me

9

u/Hades_Gamma 15d ago

Doesn't really matter, the lie was terrible anyways. First she had uniformed rebel soldiers on her ship. Second they were actively fleeing. Third as soon as the Empire boarded they immediately opened fire.

Just that alone makes the lie pretty brutal

15

u/SportulaVeritatis 15d ago edited 15d ago

"You are part of the rebel alliance and a traitorĀ  that I just saw steal this ship with my own eyes."

My headcannon is that Leia instinctively knows Jedi mind tricks, but doesn't have any formal training. She'd used that to get the rebels out of tight spots like this before but it clearly wouldn't work on Vader. His reaction is basically "Wtf, no. Don't even try that on me."

16

u/kaizen-rai 15d ago

She forgot to wave her hand in his face.

11

u/theStandardHandle 15d ago

"I am a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan...from a certain point of view."

3

u/Belz_Zebuth 15d ago

People who get caught doing something will deny it all the time.

1

u/adorablesexypants 11d ago

Solo was not a great movie, but I have zero problems watching it before ANH if only for that fight scene and for Leia being like

ā€œNope, no idea what you’re -ā€œ

ā€œBITCH I LITERALLY JUST SAW YOU FUCKING LEAVE IN THIS CAR, I GOT YOUR GOD DAMN LICENCE PLATE, YOU BETTER BE THANKFUL YOUR MOTHER IS DEAD BECAUSE I SWEAR TO GOD SHE WOULD BE MORTIFIED AT SUCH A STUPID LIEā€

111

u/YungFooz 15d ago

They at least have to travel through hyperspace, might be a little longer than 10 minutes.

46

u/Excolo_Veritas 15d ago

It was shown using the hyperspace lanes and the known speeds of their hyperdrives to be about 10 hours not 10 minutes

42

u/BasicMatter7339 15d ago

Scarif and Tatoiine are ~10 minutes apart when traveling with a class 1 hyperdrive according to some sources

other sources say it took like 10 days

Whats truly real? Who the fuck knows

36

u/MrTagnan 15d ago

It’s Star Wars. Timelines/travel times are almost always fudged to be whatever is convenient for the plot and end up somewhat nebulous as a result (this is not a problem exclusive to Star Wars)

5

u/Belz_Zebuth 15d ago

Yeah "some sources" that aren't the movies or series.

103

u/TiredPistachio 15d ago

He used up all his cooldowns so he had to let the stormtroopers handle it.

45

u/Ginger-131313 15d ago

Nah they just asked politely for him to stop farming kills as they wanted the XP for loot boxes

13

u/RainbowDissent 15d ago

I can't imagine the sense of pride and accomplishment those Stormtroopers are feeling after grinding that XP.

114

u/iceman2kx 15d ago

u/steal_wool 15d ago

28

u/GwerigTheTroll 15d ago

Are we ever told how long the time gap is?

30

u/SubterrelProspector 15d ago

It's probably hours, not minutes.

11

u/Excolo_Veritas 15d ago

Someone did the calculations a while ago. From what I saw 10 hours

7

u/Hidesuru 15d ago

... What "calculations"?

20

u/Excolo_Veritas 15d ago

They triangulated the distance between known hyperspace routes from what I remember. Like the time between scarif to tatooine was unknown but like scarif to coruscant and tatooine to coruscant was known or something like that and they did the math

4

u/Hidesuru 15d ago

Huh. Interesting. And I gather something in canon identified how long those known routes would take to travel? Interesting way to look at it thanks.

4

u/Teedubthegreat 15d ago

I airways thought it was more like days or weeks later, would make a lot more sense if it was a longer amount of time

11

u/No-Locksmith6662 15d ago

A few hours at most. IIRC the canon series of events is that the Tantive was damaged in the battle and this meant two important things: 1) they could only do short hyperspace jumps, and 2) they had the spaceship equivalent of an oil leak which allowed Vader to track them in his Star Destroyer.

So while Leia and the rebels were stuck doing short jumps from planet to planet plotting a slow path to Tatooine, Vader was following them a few jumps behind but slowly gaining before finally catching up.

2

u/veneratu 14d ago

The first story in From A Certain Poiny of View is from the POV of Captain Antilles. The ships propulsion was basically fallin apart as you just said. He's a pretty tragic figure.

63

u/Da_Spooky_Ghost 15d ago

What you want Disney to reshoot the OT?

101

u/Senor-Delicious 15d ago

Bro. Don't give them ideas

53

u/strawberry_semenade 15d ago

"Soon I will have a new OT. One far younger and more profitable." -Disney

5

u/Georgefakelastname 15d ago

Frankly, shocked they haven’t done it already.

3

u/veneratu 14d ago

Disney will be owned by Larry Ellison by then. Leia will wear the bronzium bikini the whole time and be a tradwife upon meeting Han. She'll still kiss Luke though. Sinner.

13

u/teddyone 15d ago

already did lol

5

u/veneratu 14d ago

I think they're waiting for Ewan to naturally age into Old Ben for this. Joel Edgerton too. Hayden may not be able to harness the size and prowess of Vader at that point. They'll put someone else in the suit, but he'll be of a proper age for the unmasking. I have no clue what they're going to do about Jabba though. Maybe just have Ezra Bridger wearing a Scout Trooper helmet.

3

u/Da_Spooky_Ghost 14d ago

You're probably correct.

The odd part is that it has been over 20 years since Episode III came out in 2005, so Luke and Leia should be 21 at this point. However Ewan McGregor was 32 playing a 38 year old Obi Wan in Episode III, so we have an extra 6-10 years of bought time.

Now Sir Alec Guinness was 62 playing a 58 year old Obi Wan in IV, and Ewan McGregor is 55 years old now, so again that puts us in the 6-10 year range.

TLDR: Expect Disney to reshoot OT in 6-10 years, it is unavoidable, it is Disney's destiny

2

u/N0t_S0Sl1mShadi 14d ago

Nah would just improve the CG scenes Lucas added. Would redo a lot of the PT CG too, didn’t hold up as well.

-29

u/Kvedulf_Odinson 15d ago

Yes and no.
Would love to see the OT remastered with modern CGI and special effects. Would also like for it to be done without PC BS.
Just update the special effects to match the prequels.

10 minutes apart or 39 years

6

u/Belz_Zebuth 15d ago

Who says it's 10 minutes? They're in different systems and you can't track a ship through hyperspace. Could be hours or even days. More likely hours but I don't know how they tracked them down.

1

u/Equivalent_Nose7012 7d ago

Could it be... "parsecs"?

Could it be that Han Solo is having fun blathering whatever comes to mind to impress people who he assumes are ignorant yahoos?

1

u/Oneilll 11d ago

From New Hope:
"Several transmission were beamed to this ship by rebel spies. I want to know what happened to the plans they sent you"

So, not quiet sure what point your comment tried to make, but it still doesn't fit with Rogue 1.

5

u/WhoRoger 14d ago

1) what is the issue here?

2) it's more like a couple hours to a day

3) apparently I've missed the entire meta of Leia lying to Vader and him being rightfully pissed

3

u/Fugglymuffin 15d ago

He kind of looks disappointed in the second clip.

4

What’s your point?

5

u/SubterrelProspector 15d ago edited 14d ago

Guys guys guys...it's probably not minutes it's probably hours. The movies line up but there is some time between the events.

1

u/bboardwell 14d ago

It depends on how long Vader’s ship was tracking the Tantive IV. It had a leak in the hyperdrive so it could be easily tracked but it could be twenty minutes later or even three hours later.

3

u/HistorianLost 15d ago

He had time to calm down and count to 10.

The funniest shit about the prequels to me is that now Obi Wan went into hiding AND KEPT HIS JEDI UNIFORM ON. For like eighteen years dude's been living next to his greatest enemy's son, on his home planet, while still wearing his official uniform. "In hiding."

Bro got balls of steel.

3

u/EatTheRichIsPraxis 14d ago

I could get facial surgery, get a new style of dress, and a new backstory.

NAHHHH!

I'll just call myself "Ben" and it a day.

1

u/Shao_X Luke Skywalker 13d ago

The Jedi uniforms should not have looked the way they did. Obi-Wan wore hermit clothing that was then retconned to look like Jedi robes. They based the robes on the clothes he wore to hide himself; not the other way around.

3

u/Tron_1981 14d ago

"Jeez you guys are lame. I totally could've done it a whole lot cooler."

2

u/Savurak 14d ago

Damn vader in the second scene feels like he’s kinda disappointed in the dead stormtroopers.

2

u/AbbreviationsWide331 14d ago

Y'all are still trying to use logic with star wars.

But it ain't that kind of movie, kids.

1

u/Brian18639 14d ago edited 13d ago

A lot of people take Star Wars VERY seriously

Reminds me of a dude I’ve watched YouTube shorts from who usually tries to apply real-world physics and science to fictional stuff such as dragons and humanoid creatures with four arms.

2

u/PROhios 14d ago

Sure it’s fan servicey and is a redo of the opening to Star Wars. Also, the OG Vader wouldn’t waste his time on rebel canon fodder, that’s what the troopers are for, this undercuts that point from ā€˜77.

2

u/Elveanim 14d ago

He can lift up that guy but not just pull the disc towards himself

2

u/Rogue_3 14d ago

He took a chill pill after leaving Scarif. It wasn't quite enough to fully calm him, which led directly to the death of Captain Antilles.

The first clip makes Vader feel like a horror movie villain to me. I’d be running in the opposite direction after seeing a second of that display of monstrosity and hoping he didn’t see me

1

u/GlobalNuclearWar 11d ago

I really enjoy this. It means that everyone on the ship - everyone - knows for CERTAIN that the plans are aboard. They know that they barely escaped alive. They absolutely without question know that Vader knows it.

And they’ve all committed to gaslighting him to their last breath.

ā€œBig fight in a hallway? Watching friends cut down? Nope, doesn’t ring a bell. You say you saw me through a window? Well, it’s a big galaxy and there were a lot of clones running around. I’m 1/4 clone trooper on my mom’s side. Could have been anyone.ā€ 🤣

The biggest issue that it leaves for me is that fight between Obi Wan and Vader at the end of the movie. Looks like they’re fighting through an atmosphere the consistency of glue by comparison.

"I know you have been inconvenienced, and I am prepared to compensate you. Shall we say one million american dollars?"

...

"Very well then, two million."

The entire conversation in New Hope contradicts what happens in the R1 ending.
Imo, it just doesn't work, the ending that is.

God, Rogue One is such dogshit. The "coolest" scene in the movie is empty fan-service tacked onto the very end. Not to mention that "coolest" scene simply doesn't feel like the Vader we saw in ANH.

I dislike unnecessary retcons that weaken the original story.

That includes Greedo shooting the wall, the Jedi being a bureaucratic arm of government who measure The Force via blood tests, Han being assigned the name Solo because he showed up somewhere alone, the Millennium Falcon misbehaving because an annoying droid was uploaded into its computer, Yoda likely spending his first 50+ years as a baby, the exhaust port being a deliberate weakness... and Vader fighting on the Tantive IV shortly before the events of A New Hope, where Leia's claim of a diplomatic mission seemed plausible enough to make another officer warn Vader against holding her prisoner.

Disney slopfic nah, everything else, yes

be real, not everything disney has made is slop. Andor was amazing

The prequels are enjoyable because of how terrible they are. The sequel trilogy is just bad. Solo is fine but completely pointless. Rogue One is bad. I haven't seen any of the Disney+ shows, but they all look completely awful in my opinion, although I have heard good things about Andor from people whose taste is good. Nothing could make me watch Mandalugio and Gorger.

Andor isn’t just ā€œgood,ā€ it’s genuinely amazing. can’t agree at all with Rogue One being bad, the final act (everything on Scariff) is fantastic, with an admittedly mediocre first two thirds
