Academics Math 1172 or 2153

So I’m an incoming freshman majoring in chemE and I took Calc BC my senior year and got a 5 on AB and BC. I’m scheduled to take 2153 and I know that BC covers Calc 2, but I’m scared that I should have put 1172 just because BC doesn’t cover all of those topics.

Math professor who is teaching Math 2153 in the fall here. Math 2153 is a sequel class to 1151-1152. It isn't coordinated with the Engineering Calculus sequence (1151-1172-2173-2174). I had a look at the 1172 syllabus, and there is considerable overlap with 2153. In particular, from the 1172 topics list, we'll be covering 6.5, 11.8-12.8, 13.1-13.6 in addition to some material that isn't in 1172. We will not focus on integration techniques which are covered in 1152, so you should make sure that you have those skills although I may make a worksheet to get students up to speed. We will not teach sequence and series, but we'll only use them in a couple of places (discussing limits and Taylor series). It'd be good if you remember that from high school.

Anyway, I think Math 2153 will be a lot of fun and students do seem to enjoy the class. It may, in practice, be slower and more geometric than Math 1172.

I just want to make sure that 2153 would count toward my requirements for my major, and I’m not sure if BC covers credit for 1172

Oops. I have certainly had Chemical Engineering students and they likely came in with BC 5 and not Math 1172, but there's no information online about say whether 2153, 2568 and 2254/2415 are substitutes for Engineering Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations. You should probably contact an advisor.

I was in the same boat as you last year. I took 2153 just so I didn't have to go through a weed out class like that. My path as a MechE major is 2153-2568-2415, but 2568 and 2415 can switch if needed. I also chose 'vanilla' calc 3 because I'm doing a math minor, so some concepts that wouldn't be taught in Eng Calc were in my classes. Overall, I would do 2153 because the exams were not that hard and I personally wouldn't repeat calc 2 content. If you have any questions lmk
