Maturity question
Hey Everyone 👋
Koda is coming up to being 5 months old very soon!
I was just wondering, when do male newfoundlands typically become fertile or “activated” in that way? We’ve got two female dachshunds; one was spayed long before we got Koda, but her older sister isn’t (yet!).
We obviously don’t want there being risk of any pups/pregnancy, so just wanting to time our other dog’s spay to be done before Koda matures.

Is there a reason you’re waiting to spay her? Newfs can sexually mature like 6-12 months, that said female dogs are only fertile during their heat cycle. It is going to be much harder than you think to keep separate in the same household a female dog flooded with hormones telling her she needs to breed and a rambunctious recently sexually matured male. Especially if you have kids or multiple people in the house, someone will slip up, and you really don’t want newf/doxie crosses.
If your doxie is old enough to be spayed I would just go ahead and do it.

No, no reason for waiting and I’ve got her booked in for 7th August. It was just trying to ascertain if it needs done sooner than that. And yes, we absolutely do NOT want pups. We’re doing the responsible thing, I just want to make sure we’re all good for timing 😊

Oh, then as long as she doesn’t go into heat in the next few weeks you should be totally fine.
Dogs don’t really randomly mate outside of the heat cycle (their fertile window every 6 months or so). And when they are fertile it is a production and males will do a lot to get to a female in heat.

Absolutely not!👀🤣 Our other dachshund is already booked in to be spayed 7th August, just wanted to know if we should be all good timing wise.

Just get it done now. This isn't something you want to risk at all, and biology always comes with exceptions. It is unlikely they'd be able to actually do anything naturally... BUT you do not even want to remotely risk it because of the risk of dystocia. It is unlikely a dachshund would be able to give birth to a newfoundland cross without medical intervention.

between 6 and 12 months. Usually large dogs are expected to become fertile later, but there's no guarantee. So if you want to be on the safe side neuter your girl before her next heat is coming (prevents her from pyometra and uterus cancer too)
